  1. The turre, or properly known as the Common Murre, is a coastal bird that lives along the cliffs of the Newf and Lab coasts. A poor flyer but fantastic swimmer, it often got caught in the fishermen's nets. In years of poor catch harvests, fishermen from the outports would go out and hunt them or net them. They'd be cooked in a pie, not unlike..." 4 and 20 blackbirds baked in a pie' as the rhyme goes. Years ago a school buddy's Mom made a fantastic pie. His uncle would ship a crate of the birds from St John's every year.

  16. Sometimes it gets downright frustrating reading the reports on the board about the great fishing. My turn. The chaperon/son and I drove up to Orillia to meet up with CPH today. Left Niagara's stormy skies behind to be greeted by bluebird skies and calm. Any who know Steve will tell you he is a stand up guy and knows where to find a few fish. Well we found fish. Early in the day we caught this sow. Followed by a surprise. In the end Rob and I brought home 60 very sizeable perch. THank you for a great day out Steve.
  17. I'm up at St Jakobs most Saturdays til the snow flies. A good friend has run a farm stall there for the past 20 years. We have a hoot.

  19. It's the end result that counts. The obstacles are just the daily challenges that make success that much sweeter.
  20. have not had any fishing to report lately. Been too busy with the joys of the harvest. Time to can some of that summer warmth I'm still picking a bushel a week of the jalapenos. Nother few weeks and they'l pull all the tomatoes in the hoop houses. Can you say pickled green tomatoes?
  21. Every once in a while, the employer gets back in a big way. I've sent numerous fellas packing when i've caught them soused on a jobsite. Drunks operating equipment are a hazard to everyone on site. And when house starts are slow, contractor crews are dime a dozen. In reference to plant substance abuse. The Scarborough van plant had to be one of the worst facilities on record. The union dug it's heels in and refused to address the problem. Any vehicle built on a Friday or Monday was a lemon. There was also a practice called red-balling that employees were engaged in. A red ball on the dash meant the vehicle was due for some "special attention". In the end the plant was shut down and a lot of jobs were lost.
  22. I do dearly feel for you. It's too much to have dumped on your plate in one day. I hope your daughter will recover quickly. She is the priority concern at this moment . Take care.
  23. You betcha. Especially October-November.
  24. Right wing media does the same thing, and uses the same methodology to push a different message. Read up on McLuhan. As he put it, the medium becomes the message.
