  1. used to love the fluro leader uni-uni until i got bit off one day and go steel all the way now! personal opinion though 1 out of a few hundred isnt bad though! who knows i may end up with problems with a steel leader yet!
  2. personally i use spiderwire XXX its the stuff in the yellow box very supple even in the cold and takes a good beating! 110yds to a spool the 20 lb is an 8 lb diameter i believe and the 10 lb is a 2 lbs diameter i believe i would try the 20 and i think its even on at CT for 15$ a spool right now a good price for braid!
  3. i would likely bumb that 6 up to a deccent 10-20 braid same diameter so no line loss on the spool and you never know when you may latch into a monster that wants to run as for the leader i always use the thinest diameter leaders that are a 5lb test higher than the line i use and make sure they have a good swivel at the top if your gonna jig a spoon!
  4. its the days when the bites slow that 5 would be nice! and as for why its not nationwide is because how do u reulate alberta deer numbers to quebec and so on and so forth but ontario is behind the ball on the wildlife aspect for sure in many areas!
  5. well lucky you!!!! i normally use salted minnows any how and only two lines!!! elbows must be hurting at the end of the day, although i have to say that Quebec does have a what i would say is a better fish and wildlife program than here especially wildlife and dont blame them for trying to keep it that way!
  6. i have used the swim bait shads in red n white often for pike thought the ice jigging and done well and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
  7. love the pictures! thanks for the share, just as good as seeing a fish sometimes!
  8. yes jaques just the two and live minnows are not allowed in all lakes and personally think that dace are the only live minnows that should be allowed here as they dont disturb and eco system too much. how many lines are you allowed across the creek? where abouts "up north" you and your son headin DONT GET CAUGHT?
  9. i must say that at that price i just had to buy a few new sets as spares i put new ones on every season and keep them there and carry a spare set in my fishing pack along with tools to change them and definatley do now how to sharpen them as well as knives axes chainsaws its a part of my job i likely sharpen 20-30 axes and pulaski's every month 10-15 chains and am now trying to get the hang on sharpening with diamond stone. its much more difficult as for holes i use a hand auger once we get about a foot of ice until then its a chisel which gets sharpened after each day of use and as for number of holes depending on what i'm fishing if out on a small lake for speckle trout i only use 1 line all day and make swiss cheese out of the ice until i get on the fish i've come to figure with the 6" auger i'm about one turn per inch of ice thats with shimms in the blade i touch them up as i start to notice dulling and have an ample source of files and stones, while sitting around the house watching some wild tv or wfn i often sharpen my knives to pass the time and it definatley is good to know how to sharpen them but the question was where can i get them sharpened so i would just rather buy a new set for the price i paid before paying to have them sharpened was all.
  10. hahahah i know what lake your goin fishin at. NUNYA lake i fish there often "where ya goin? nunya lake, where's that? nunya business!" HAHA
  11. its gonna have to be trial and error i have a different opinion than some of these and others differ as well this a personal choice when all said and done your goin to end up with birdnests depending on what your tossing
  12. u watch jaques brian is gonna have the backround and shorline cloured black with the use of paint when his report comes out! HAHA
  13. i'll be out fishing tonight again jaques, so i may slip up once more i prefer the monday to friday fishing anyhow less people can steal my tricks if they're watchin me! hahah nothin beter than a day of fishin with good friends!
  14. looks like a good day was had by all, -16 is manageable at least and wind out of the east boo! hahah i'm a firm believer in the westerlies, nice pics good report and what time is dinner becasue i didnt get out today. not that i slept in like some!!!! hahah but never got to bed!
  15. almost costs more to get them sharpened as it does to buy a new set at wally world either for power or hand bombers a good time to pick them up is at wal mart in the spring they go on clearance i have enough 8" and 6" hand auger blades to last a lifetime went down to 7 50 a pair on clearance last spring the other is to use vaseline on them after the ice ice season keeps them good till spring same as the hockey skates!
  16. he's an excellent guy, playued hockey with him in new liskeard a few times in a mens leaugue hes not the greatest hockey player but very respectable one of a kind true class he alos had a show caleed "off the grid" he and the whole family lived off thr grid and it was a pretty good show as well.
  17. i work with the MNr as a firefighter dan and the 76 series are starting to have some problems we are hard on them as well but black screens grey screens with a line through them having to turn them off then on again to get a satellite signal as fot the 60 series the GPSMAP 60CSx is by far the best that i have ever used a friend has one and gets a good satelite signal in his wartime home in the basement.
  18. just a quick note on that if u dont need something super amazing just marking some lakes and spots on the water u can get the etrex legend (blue one) at wal mart for 149.99 it comes with the topo canada program 4 cd's a case the computer cord ownedrs manual the whole kit so even if u want the topo canada at 179.99 at CT u may as well by a spare gps and other accesories along with the cd's and save your money!
  19. i personally own a garmin and have since i was 13 started with a plain jane garmin 12. now have a legend hcx with external memory long life on 2 AA bateries rather than 4 have topo canda sotware on it and i believe they also sell a depth chart map program, but if i were you make sure to get one that has an SD card slot or external memory so you can add all these programs to it with room to spare. well worth the extra few bux. but make sure to carry a compass and map always!!! i forgot once and it was of course the time my bateries died and i had no others 90 miles from the closest community.
  20. so if your at the dealership right now what is the price on a starter for a 92' dakota 3.9 6 cyl? lol
  21. not a chance profisher what happens is the snow acts as an isulation to the ice the water underneath being above the freezing point as well so when u stick something in between the insulation and the "warmth" of the water it doesnt freeze as well it also creates more weight on the ice which in turn pushes the ice down therfore the water rises above the ice and meets the snow creating slush, which equals more weight again. and i personally dont enjoy walking/fishing/drilling holes/snowmobiling or doin anything else in the slush. look it up and do a bit of research and ask yourself , if heat rises and cold drops then why doesnt the water freeze from the bottom up? so do a little research on things before u sound silly in the future no hard feelings by any means! Matt
  22. if this weather keeps up wayne you may want to get 2 or 3 extensions for that jiffy!
  23. excellent report much better than a pile of reading i must say. i like the choice of lures i use many of the same, glad to see you had the chance to spend some time with the ole' man cuz once they move away you start to realize that u once took advantage of him being there all the time and just so ya know them gumrubbers are only good up to the top! congrats on what looks like a good season wether it was as much as you had hoped or not thanks for sharing! Matt!
  24. hahaha i hope so bernie, no shovelling the past week has been great and as for the -20's wear an extra layer on the lake is all, drove past the lookout between wasi and callander this AM and the lake is froze over as far as the eye can see. and if i recall about 2 weks ago before the "thaw" i had said in a thread that a couple warm days with rain followed by cold is the best thing our lakes could get!
