  1. Something I haven't seen in the regulations is the legality of having fishing gear in a sanctuary. I know that having weapons in a no hunting area, and/or out of season, can be considered 'prima facie' evidence of hunting, and you could be charged. But as long as it isn't being used is it legal to transition through a sanctuary with fishing gear? Should it have terminal tackle removed? Should it be stowed away somewhere? I would probably remove any lures or hooks, but is it really necessary?
  2. Good for him, but that doesn't give him the right to restrict the liberties of others. The point is that a person should not have the right, at least in my opinion, to buy up land surrounding what was formerly public lakes and then restrict access. Let them buy up a lot of it, but the access should be maintained. Until it's resolved I would take the interim stand that he can't own the water, and would be encouraging fly-in operators to access it constantly with floatplanes. Wait until he gets tired of a few Cessna 180s and 185s flying in and out, props screaming away in fine pitch. And a bunch of ultra-lights buzzing their lawnmower motors over his house, (the local ultra-light schools might like to use it as an area for float training). After a while he might prefer the peace and quiet of a vehicle on a road.
  3. And yet they're always telling us that we don't know how to drive in snow.
  4. We're at the mercy of speculators (ain't the free market system great?) and unstable governments in countries that have a crapload of oil. Nothing we can do about it. If the government tried to regulate the market there would be screams from the billionaires who line their pockets. Until we start using less the price will keep going up.
  5. If we can get Wave Disk engines up and running we might see oil prices drop. And they aren't some 'pie in the sky' idea that you see in Popular Mechanics, these are being developed by reputable agencies. They are about 30% lighter than regular piston engines, and whereas a normal engine gets about 15% efficiency out of gasoline, a wave disk engine gets about 60%. Link here.
  6. True, according to Snopes.com. SUV driver was the sole occupant, deceased. Truck driver suffered moderate injuries.
  7. Had an e-mail from someone who is interested in participating in the Gals 'n' Pals tournament. He says his boat, including the liability coverage, is included in his house insurance, and he doesn't have a separate slip for the boat. Haven't run into this one before, wondering if you folks can advise me on this one. Is this something normal, and would having a copy of his house insurance form with him be okay?
  8. I'm no lawyer, but liability was the first thing that came to my mind. And see if you can get an agreement out of him that if he hits the motherlode it's a 50-50 split. That $700 could wind up looking like chicken feed!
  9. Haven't been whale watching in far too long, now I'm getting the urge again.
  10. Thanks. I'm up in that area occasionally, I'll stop in next time.
  11. Lots of good info, thanks guys!
  12. Nice ones. Nothing for me yet this year, but I was only out twice. Yeah, just about anything north and east of Frenchman's Bay is Zone 17. FB itself is Zone 20, so until May 5th it's nothing for me without a drive.
  13. Sadly, our schools aren't doing a great job of teaching subjects like that.
  14. Yup, figured that. Okay...
  15. Thanks. We don't have a trailer so it's deflate and inflate. How would you say security is at that launch on Stormy? Guess we could use some sort of chain and lock, but that won't deter anyone who really wants a boat and motor.
  16. I did some searches and some of you have a fairly good knowledge of this park. I am wondering if it is possible to get a small boat or canoe up the river from Restoule Lake into Stormy Lake. On Google maps there seems to be a bridge crossing the river about halfway up, not sure if it's 'duckable' or not. We've got a week reserved there in mid August. If we need to transport to the Stormy Lake launch that's no big problem, but it would be easier to keep the Zodiac inflated, with motor installed, and on the beach at our site.
  17. You might be able to rent boars, but not boats. At least not in the park, no power allowed.
  18. RPM Marina on Kashagawigamog advertises rentals, but I'm not certain of exactly what. It used to be Robert's Marina, a chap named Craig Bowker has taken it over. His web site is still being set up, you can contact them at 1-705-457-1473
  19. My main worry would be the hoop. A telescoping handle would not be a problem, lots of different implements have them and most work fine, but that hoop would have to expand as well in order to make the mouth of the net large enough for a fish. Thinking it might be a bit flimsy. Haven't seen one on shelves, so I have no idea how strong it might be. The picture on the web site only shows it in the compacted state.
  20. I was looking at it on their web site, wondering if it might be easier to use in the confines of a canoe. Link here: Pocket net
  21. I'll have to get my wife to do hers that way, I love it when they talk dirty.
  22. I would buy his explanation about not wanting lost hooks in a popular swimming area. The kids would not be there today, but by the time they are any hooks would still be sharp.
  23. Yep, under 'Rods and reels'.
  24. Dead links updated, one removed.
  25. Oops, double post.
