You are right Old. Execution is probably not what I would want. I did watch a program on TV that discussed the issue of drug addicts in Seattle. One of the people interviewed was an EMT, on a live call, at a junkies address saving him from OD FOR THE 6TH TIME. HE said it's time to just let them go freeing up his time for other, sober, people that are having life threatening episodes. The cost in $$, in wasted effort, and in rationed attention to non drug addicts is just galling, at least to that particular EMT. Having lived in Vancouver for 6 years I can tell you that people here in Ontario have NO IDEA how bad it can get with druggies. I have recent personal knowledge of a 34 year old guy who at a christening party for his newborn sniffed up some coke and promptly expired. The cause was Fentanyl, in his cocaine. An accident? No, deliberate assinine behavior by a 34 year old, wealthy, fool who MUST have know that this is a likely result of putting your health and safety in the hands of a drug dealer with a massive vested interest to cut Fentanyl into his product. This fact must be a nightly subject on the Vancouver news yet this goof did it anyway.

There is still the cops investigation, court (many appearances likely) the ankle bracelet itself, the monitoring system ands the inevitable follow up arrests and then incarceration when junkies go out looking for their fix abrogating their court ordered confinement. I'm betting the path of least resistance for the cops, prosecutors and judges is don't bother investigating throw it over to the insurance industry to resolve. As matter of fact I know that's the way it works and it has worked that way since I was involved with the police in the 1990's. It has not gotten better since then, in fact it's far worse now than then. I know of serious criminals that got away with their crimes in the 90's because the cops or prosecutors were unable to wrap their heads around the crime or there was not the $$$ available to successfully investigate the crime let alone get a conviction. There's also the big issue in the 90's and I'm pretty sure the same applies today, that there is a serious lack of available places to put people in physical jail. No vacancy, literally.

I sort of agree but I also know that space is limited in jail, the courts, in probation etc. The cops have to pick their fights. Non violent relatively minor loses DO figure into it., sorry to say. Personally it would not bother me if the powers that be executed felons, drug users, Jihadis, etc. But they won't and we all know it so it's best to not leave stuff in sight as it's an open invitation. I'd also urge you to move but truth is I lived in Oakville up until 2019 and in that year there were 2 murders within blocks of my home, the FBI informed Halton that it was a focus of crime tourism originating in Chile, Columbia and Peru and my friends that still live there say the crime spree continues unabated. I'm now in St Catharines and LOTS of people here LOOK like the criminal element but I have had no problems other than some incredibly discourteous, reckless drivers that are doubly so when I'm on foot. Going for a walk is supposed to be healthy but around here it could easily get you killed.

Cops and the judges work for the government and that dominates their thinking. The cost of keeping a prisoner in jail, in Canada , IS UNBELIEVABLY EXPENSIVE. FEDERAL INMATES COST OVER $100k PER ANNUM. THROWING THEM IN JAIL FOR $2-3 k WORTH OF PROPERTY IS NOT WORTH IT TO THEM, or to us. Insure your stuff and don't leave your really valuable stuff in plain sight.

In the council meeting the local government claimed it was to protect people strolling around the pier with their lattes, dogs, phones, babies etc from anglers chucking pieces of metal with 3 hook points. I know there was also an issue re the Oct 15th date to do with the passage of boats to and from the lake via the channel which runs along the eastern pier. All boats are supposed to be off the water in the marina by that time. The shore anglers chucking spoons at boats that for one reason or another had run afoul of their "rights". Who would have thought. I have had shore anglers chuck spoons at me in my pontoon boat at Bronte on numerous occasions. The city council has lots of conflicting constituencies to deal with at both piers in Oakville and this is their decision. It's probably a relatively good one imo but I would bet that soon some sort of parking effort will be used to curtail fishing at Bronte. Here in St Catharines the parking is now very expensive at the beaches UNLESS you can prove you live in St Catharines then it's free with a card to hang off the rearview mirror. Ultimately I think for the cities there's more money in lattes, dog walking, strollers with babies and the commerce they bring as opposed to anglers who don't spend a dime. I hope I'm not bursting anyone's balloon but I think in the coming years we are going to see severely strapped governments at all levels and they will be implementing taxes and fees that were heretofore unheard of.

Only the western pier is open. The eastern pier and the piers at Oakville Creek (16 Mile Creek to some) don't open for angling until Oct 15th

I saw that kid catch the fish at Bronte from my 'toon. Good going and congrats to dad for taking the kid out fishing.

Seems to me that Quantum, Abu, Lews, and Bass Pro all have the same manufacturer of their casting reels. They all look so similar but not necessarily bad.

Fishing is good inside the pier to the harbour side. It's the only side you will catch any bass. It's actually a very good thing that Oakville is listening to the angling community as Oakville and area has it's fair share of anglers. I bet Colonel Guy Smith had something to do with this. He's always got his nose into stuff like this and it's pro angling in all it's forms.

I saw the charter guy that Bob Izumi and Charlie Ray go out with all the time say that for his St Clair Charters the best conditions come on an Eastern wind. When asked about it he said the caveat that East is Least for fishing does not apply to St Clair. It was a calm water point that he was making.

I got a call from a friend this morning telling me that signs are up at Bronte and Oakville Creek saying that fishing, from the piers, IS permitted from Oct 15 until May 15 (mid fall through until the spring). That's fishing from all piers in Oakville from Oct 15 to May 15. All year fishing is permitted on the western pier at Bronte and to the best of his knowledge there have been NO FINES for fishing on the harour side of the western pier. The biggest caveat is that there is a PARKING BAN on overnight parking at Bronte. It's a dusk to dawn parking ban on the free parking there ( free unless you have a boat trailer then it's expensive parking that i assume is also dusk to dawn banned)). I had a buddy last year who went to Bronte 3 times and got a parking ticket every time, lol. I guess he parked at night or they saw his $100K truck and figured he should have to pay.

Not to belabor the issue but knowing that restricted access is now a thing in Oakville and the one spot available to people who don't have access to a boat was always almost devoid of bass I'm sure you can see why someone might take it upon themselves to voice their displeasure, wrong as it is.. Knowing what I do about Bronte the guy you are complaining about is an older guy with a name that starts with C and ends with F. He's gone apoplectic on me several times as well but for other angling related reasons. When our fall back position is that it's legal i think there's been a million posts here and elsewhere opining on the absurdly ineffectual way the government at all levels and the MNR specifically goes about their business. In many cases that something is legal may also indicate that it's likely to be wrong headed at the minimum. One last thing. The same people that make Ontario fisheries law, the MNR, are the same folks who brought you the gentrification of the shoreline especially at Oakville Creek pier and waterfront and soon at Bronte as well.( I live in St Catharines and they have done the same thing here). I was at both meetings they had on the subject and the claim at that time was that miles of rip rap and boulevard level path walks would enhance the Lake Ontario fishery immensely. They failed to mention the fact that these new Yorkville level enhancements would be sullied by some grubby old anglers so the city of Oakville took it upon itself to ban fishing from Oakville Creek pier and they also banned it at Bronte Pier(s) for a time. There were enough complaints that they did open up the western pier to shore angling provided the anglers fished only the lake side of the pier and not the harbour side. Caught many bass on the lake side of the pier? I would say NO. It should be noted that the city's side of the argument for closing the fancy new pier facilities to fishing were litter, swearing, fish guts, and reckless casting off the pier when latte drinking dog walkers passed by. As I said I would not have said anything

Like I said in the post I would not say anything to this angler. I would fume and the obvious fact that there's some fish in one spot and few in another motivates me and others to protect the spot that has few by not keeping fish even though the law allows it. It's sensible behavior that includes sportsmanship and thinking about the opportunities for others rather than taking what would never be necessary for sustinance.

I notice that the original poster is from Oakville so I assume he is fishing at Bronte for bass. I used to live in Oakville and I fished , for bass from a pontoon rowboat, at Oakville Creek. I understand pier fishing is no longer allowed at Oakville Creek so I guess Bronte is the only option for pier anglers. There have NEVER been very many bass at Bronte. Tons of Salmon and Rainbows in the spring and fall but very few bass particularly as compared to Oakville Creek (some know it a 16 Mile Creek). In the old days at Oakville Creek I would regularly get from a low of 10 to 15 bass to a high of 50 or 60 bass a day. My best days at Bronte for bass would be maybe 6 to10 fish with zip a distinct possibility. I must also state that because I fish from a Hobie I had the option to go up the creek to Rebecca street so I had much more water to cover. I have not been limited to fishing piers for some time but if I was forced by circumstance to fish from piers and I lived in Oakville and the option was Bronte (and from the western pier only as I believe you can't fish from the eastern pier anymore) I would be furious with an angler for keeping a bass that I understand is in very short supply. I would never say anything but I would be fuming. I would be mad because following the law in this case would be abusing the opportunities of others and would illustrate the kind of ignorance that typifies angling in Ontario. This deliberate ignorance manifests itself in littering, egg collection, derbies, reckless boating, impatience and unpreparedness at the boat launch and internet bro's inferring they would be beating people up over fishing etiquette. I must also point out that just because the MNR allows the retention of bass does not mean it is a good idea in all cases. Falling back on the legality of it only facilitates a careless approach to HELPING to manage fish so there's a sport of fishing available to all and not a free feed for people that are not in dire financial circumstances.

Beating someone up in Ontario will cost you about $10K. So that might be a consideration.

Years ago my sister had a place i the Florida Keys. I had one rod at the time, a Conolon Hellbender 10'6" float/spin rod. and a Whisker. I bought some bait, crabs I think, at the tackle shop. I took it out to the small dock the development had and floated the bait. Bonefish on. Over my vacation there I did quite well on bones and some small panfish sized fish that were really tasty. The guys at the bait shop didn't believe I'd caught bonefish that way claiming they must be Ladyfish and I was mis identifying them. They WERE Bones and they were awesome fighters faster than a steelie and for their size really powerful. They were perfect for the floating setup except that getting them that way pissed off the flyboys.

Late August /early September and out of a power boat 50 feet of water and a little deeper (they will usually show themselves on the surface or you can see them on your scope) but using planer boards not down riggers. We used to run Mag Wiggle Warts and Deep Diving Thundersticks. Lots of better choices these days. They will come up for them. Fishfull Thinking fishing show will show lots of other techniques to really get to the bottom if you don't mind losing gear. Hint downriggers AND Jet Divers then you only lose the Jet Diver but you will lose them sure as shooting.

Early to the point that going home at 9 am seems like a long day. They bite from the time you see a sliver of horizon , about 4;55 am these days till about 6 or 6:30. Then the search is on and you might get another bite. This is usually when the pro's go out to the blue zone and con their customers into thinking that rainbows on trolling gear counts as a fish and should be counted as part of a successful day on the water when referring to the trip. Did I say early?

This is NOT my boat and I don't know the guy but I had the same make of Foldcat boat but the smaller 2 seat version. They are great well made boats for the money. This guy has modified the 4 seater to a, better laid out, 2 seater and if I had somewhere to put the thing i would buy it. I have a Hobie Floatcat rowboat. It's great for me because I can store my Hobbie Floatcat indoors and I carry it on the top of my Volkswagon. The Hobie is about 55lb, this thing would weigh more. I did sell my 2 seat Foldcat to a guy who picked it up in a Chevy Volt.
