We may need to change the opening seasons
MCTFisher9120 replied to bigfish1965's topic in General Discussion
I like your post HH. Catching my first rainbow this week made me soo happy but now that I think about it, it is not ethical to do. Fish should be fished for when they are not spawning. Perhaps river fishing should be put to fishing only for smaller river dwelling rainbows and browns that spend their lives under banks and bushes. I had lot's more fun catching little fish with spinners. I learned a lot about Ontario's fishery these past few years as a young angler and every year I appreciate the seasons more and more. Honestly, fishing for big trout is done for myself...guess 1 extra fish per year wont be hooked and disturbed by myself. No biggie but spawning and the creation of life is extraordinary and stressful for fish already...having a fish leap into the air 6 ft...run into rocks, up current down current blah blah blah is enjoyment in some peoples eye's. Rick, as for the seasons they won't change but I do see your point and I am glad the warm weather has some early. I remember last season catching 1.5-3lb smallies and largies on lake seymour for 1 week after opener and lot's of them(not all) had little bellies. Perhaps a warmer start is better for the fishery. Fish that have already spawned out are better to catch anyway. As a side note...why not fish lakes for trout when they are feeding and building energy to make the journey up stream. -
Nice perch and cats!

Ya another new guy! Welcome to the club

Go for it...my 30lb Kota moves my 12' fine...a 38 should be good for a 14' bud...I would love to see somebody get 2 and put them on their transom...run them both lol...only in the south i guess lol.

Fair enough, the media likes to make it seem the other way around though...or so i remember, it was a year ago. Good for them though, I am not a fan of Washington. Let's go Pens! -

Wait now you two...i had to read the other comments and there will be no throwing of me in the river or rocks at my hear haha. Alex buddy the Rainbows seemed to move down further last night...all that's up by me in the creek are suckers(caught 1 of them). Right when I figure the fish out they dissapear...
-
Yup your right, our buddy Steve managed a half dozen walleye at night in the 14-18" range...Very cold crappy weather in the fall there but if you stick it out u will catch them..jig and minnow works well there. As for the spring opening I'm not sure on what to use but I hear lot's, too many people fish it. O well.

wow, congrads on so many beautiful catches. Thanks for sharing, MTBF

Is that the name these fish are given? Can I have permission trout masters to call these beasts "Steelhead" ??? Haha, thanks for the comments.

I don't know what I'm talking about but if I had smaller 1/8 and 1/16oz spinners I would of been able to get more strikes from little trout. Try those, get yourself some 4-8lb mono or fluorocarbon line bud. Those and even tiny rapala crankbaits have worked...was watching a guy fishing around logs wit this thing and you would not believe how many small trout he was catching on it. Give either of these a try and you should be able to get some fish. Spot some bigger fish and cast upwards of them...longer rod helps when fishing the middle or other side of the river...if ur creepin on little guys shorter rods would be best. I was stuck with a 6'6 but it did the job...a 7 with 6lb fluoro would be ideal for spinners on bigger fish and a 6-6'3 would be fine for smaller fish with occasional big boys comin out to play. Use what you have but Ryan man...trout do not like fireline Crystal...or maybe it was me they didn't like

That account seems to be in the registers at BPS lol

No point, I love that little HT ice fishing reel full of 4lb fluoro haha. It was a great fight although I got scared at times I made it happen. Thanks for the reply, MTBF

Great job man, congrads. MTBF -
So for the last three days I have been trying to catch a rainbow trout in the river with no luck...until this afternoon. At first I started fishing spinners around cover with only a few strikes and no fish...then I started fishing a tiny 1/16oz jig with a crappie tube or little mister twister(panfish gear)...had a great hit and miss. I had 6lb braid mainline with a 4lb leader of fluorocarbon...the line snapped at the knot when i set the hook on a solid 14-18" fish. Well, I knew my presentation was solid I just needed more strenght. So I took my HT ice fishing reel(where i got the 4lb fluoro from) and put it on my spinning rod. Tied on the tube and I went out again after lunch. Just as I arrived I caught a beauty fish...had my hands around it calling for my uncle to bring the camera and his self(went wondering)...then i lost grip and away she went .....no luck after that for a hour or so then I managed to get another strike from a fish. Not sure on the length but it was a beautiful strong fish and this taught me lot's about river fishing these past few days but I did what I could and made it work. Here are the pictures :) I got lucky...the bait was right under the nose haha Yes after a long fight with straight 4lb Fluorocarbon and a tiny reel I won the battle Well I'm pumped, might try some more later this week...O wait Pike is opening up soon Thanks for viewing, MTBF
