  1. If your looking for a great drive to lake that is uncrowded, and true North wilderness. Try Lake Kipawa. The Lake is massive, but has so many little arms and bays there's always places to fish no matter what the weather. It is an hr drive North East of North Bay, just inside the Quebec border. There are lots of outfitters there who offer, a variety of different accomodations and packages. Lots of Walleye, Giant Pike to 30 Lbs and Lake Trout. GL MIKE
  2. Check out the Rapala Saltwater Husky Jerk. Silver/Black and Gold/Black. The solid bait not the jointed ones. For spring Pike retreive these with a stop and go action, Long pulls - point rod at bait and pull to your side, so 6 or 7 feet of line is pulled. Experiment with speed/candence. I have won a 2007 Pike tournament using these baits, lots of Pike of all sizes, including a 42" and a 46". Very tough durable lure. Should work well in GB, there are lots of baitfish with a similar profile the Pike there eat. GL MIKE
  3. For Pike try River Shiners if you can get them. The larger the better. 8 - 10 " size. They are Golden or Silver and big pike love em. Try a quick strike rig on a big slip float. I use a saltwater version, that is popular for Redfish and Trout, when livebait rigging. The float has a bead, brass clicker set up much like a carolina bass rig, hanging below the float. You cast out, let the bait fall to desired depth, let sit, then crank in with big pulls to a new spot. This pulls the bait up to the float, hitting clicker and causing a racket to get Gators attention. Works well. Bait runner reels are handy as well. GL MIKE
  4. Hey Tom Late spring early summer will have the Walleye moving to their summer haunts and the big spawning schools will be breaking up. Concentrate on shallow flats and water inflows in the morning and evening. Jigs tipped with worms and leeches work great. Lindy rigs w/ pink float beads. Other than low light times, trolling is probably the best bet to find scattered fish. If you get on a good group. switch to the jigs again. Trolling baits that work well there. Shallow stick baits, Bombers, Rapala. Divers, Hot'nTot - smallest size for 10 to 15 feet next size up for 15' to 20'. If it gets real calm/sunny next size up for 20 to 25'. Silver chrome/blk back and Gold Chrome/blak back work great. For Pike, pretty much same areas, I usually have a Muskie rod just for them, with heavier line and good steel leader, for casting and trolling bigger baits. Any large Pike/Muskie bait works. the forage base there for them is primarily "fall fish" a large scaled very silver bait fish that grows to about a lb. most are 6 to 10 inches in length. The bigger Walleye prey on them too. Lake trout, troll depths of 50 to 55 feet early and late. GL MIKE
  5. Often there is one or 2 "loops" causing the problem. I pull the line at the loop off the reel in reverse, - actually pulling more line onto the spool - pulling the lure in. Do this for 4 or 5 revolutions, then pull all the line back out from the lure end until the tangle is gone. Usually it comes right out.
  6. Try Lake Muskoka. There are lots of accomodations. It close. The fishing is better than most people realize. Walleye to 12 LBS, Lake Trout to 30 LBS. Pike to 25 LBS. Excellent Smallmouth and Largemouth. Check my site to see pics, and accomodation info. We landed a 7.1 LB Smallmouth in 2008, and the tournament winning 43" Pike "Big Fish" in 2007. Club Muskoka
  7. There's a lot of aspects to look at with braid vs mono. I have found with a lot of experimenting that, you need to really match the reel you have and rod you have to a specific braid and lb test. Smaller diameter will birds nest easier than heavier lb test braid, but it also has less memory. I only use braid with an equivalent dia. of about 6 lb or 8LB mono, then use a flourocarbon leader. Smaller dia causes too many "wind tangles". I like spider wire for spinning and Power pro for heavier baitcast rigs. Again I prefer mono Berkley XL - extra limp- for small dia spinning rigs. 6 or 8 lb for Smallies and Walleye. I will only use braid for very deep applications or very heavy cover, brush and weeds. I also find the braid works better with a fiberglass rod, and mono with higher quality graphite rods. If you get a really badly twisted line just take it for a quick troll with nothing on the end of the line. Let out half the spool with nothing tied on, and troll it as fast as you can, the water drag will pull the twist right out in a couple hundred yards. GL MIKE
  8. The stats they publish are pretty much based on what people keep, not what they actually catch. They are also based on voluntary reporting, so unfortunately there is a fair bit of crap. Check out Lac Pin Blanc, or Watch, or Du Fils. I have fished them all dozens of times - worst miserable cold front day on the water was still about a 20 walleye day. Normal days are 50 to 100 walleye Per angler. YUP Jammed with em. Cheers Mike
  9. Yup me an my floater suit will watch you roar by on the Cat. Then when it craps out like most of em do, I'll wave as I sail by at 125MPH on my SkiDOO. With my nice 2 dinner walleye's on board. EEEEEEE
  10. Coleman Soup Thermos works great too. The big wide mouth model. Allow a regular minnow net to fit down in it. Also rugged plastic. It can be banged around on the sled and stands up great. Tip - Make sure to fill it full to the brim with water once minnows are in. If it is only partially full, the water will slosh around enough to kill a lot of minnows. I have ridden all day on the snowmobile and still have had lively minnows at nightfall.
  11. I had a similar issue, but when I found the Marinas Price page, they had taped to the boat. It listed Boat, motor, trailor, and full top. They ponied up and actually had to order one special, as it was missing from the boat. If you could find anything written by the marina, for the boat, motor, top I think they would have to include it N/C. If not, and you have'nt paid yet, try on another dealer, see if they will offer it for your price.
  12. Hey Stoty If your interested in Temiskaming area. You need to go to the Zec Restigo. If you want 100 plus walleye days, and a shot at a 15lb Walleye. That's where you want to go. It's a few more bucks, as you need a Quebec lisense and you pay the Zec by the day, but there are dozens of beautiful empty lake you can camp on. They are all JAMMED full of walleye. Lots of Pike too, with 30LB plus Pike caught every yr. If you want more details drop me an email.
  13. Guy's quick. He did'nt zipper them though. Missed the last step, for the filets to be 100% bone free. For the "fussy" diners.
  14. The Mustang Ice Rider 2 peice suit is just as comfy and warm as any regular sleddin suit. a little pricey, but nice insurance. I've worn out 2 suits now, only went in the water once. that was actually down at Quinte in November. From a boat - no ice. They make great spring/fall fishing suits as well as winter. Better than lots of clothes and a bulky life jacket. Just got to try an keep the Walleye Poo off them, so ya look good sleddin. The Mustang do not stiffen up in cold like some others, or their older versions.
  15. I used the 3M kit on a pretty badly faded out hull and it came back like new. Used a power buffer, you may be able to rent one. The kit had 3 bottles, one with a grit that pulled all the oxidation out with the buffer. a bit of elbow grease, but inexpensive and great results.
  16. I think that "Save Lake Simcoe" group has done anamazing job!!! Congrats to all who were involved. Is there any way we can get them to start on the next Lake now. Lake Simcoe is part of the trent-severn system. There are about 20 other lakes connected to Simcoe, and they are all jsut as polluted if not more so than Simcoe. Lets get 20 million for each of them too !! Really I think it would be a great use of tax payers dollars. cleaning up our lakes and rivers is a lot more important to me than a lot of other dumb programs the gov't spends tax dollars on. Can we start "SAVE SPARROW LAKE" for 09.?
  17. I know just how the guy felt. Unfortunately when it happened to me it was a 6/0 Vibrax Muskie Double Buck lure. The hook entered the back of my hand between two knuckles and the point was sticking out my palm. To add insult to injury, there was a very upset 15Lb Muskie still attached to the other treble of the Double Buck . When the hook got me I was about to unhook the Muskie, still in the water, without touching him - I thought. He had one hook through the snout, figured I could just reach down with the needle noose grab the hook in front of his nose and twist him free. I guess when he saw my hand coming he decided he should jump straight up into my face as I was leaning over the gunwhale of the boat - he just missed my nose, and as he dropped back to the water, the hook got the hand with the pliars. Of course my fingers jerked open - pliars to bottom of lake - and the Muskie decided to renew his fight with my arm now acting like a fishing rod, as he tried to swim down and yank me overboard. I immediately - in panic - grabbed for him with my other hand and got a grip on his snout and kind of the lure, cutting that hand with a hook point as I wrestled him into the boat. Of course I was alone, except for my dog, and I was now lying on the floor of the boat, on top of the fish sort of to keep him from thrashing, cause when he did that there was a bad crunching noise coming from my knuckles with the hook thru them and I was almost passing out from the excrutiating pain. Of course the pliars were gone, and as soon as I let go of him with the "good" hand he would go nuts again flopping around and causing me to see stars. Of course there were no other boats in sight, and my dog did'nt seem to understand my commands to open the glove box and get the other pliars - even though he was a very smart Border Collie. I finally figured to place the other 2 hook points of the treble thru my hand on the walkthru windshield edge, thereby hanging the fish's weight on the windsheild, and somewhat taking the pressure off the hook in my hand, glorious relief. I was able to snatch out the other pliars and snip the wire joining me to the Muskie. I was then able to unhook him, and recessitate him so he could live to swim another day, and maybe battle another Muskie angler and win as he did in my case. The whole episode took probably only a minute or 2, but it seemed like forever at the time. I ended up at the local hospital, where they froze the hand and used mini bolt cutters to get the hook out. The doctor was kind of funy, he unwrapped the cloth I had on it and says right away, Oh another Muskie guy - you're lucky we had one in here with a big old treble in his leg 2 summers ago, and we had to send someone out to buy these nifty little bolt cutters as our regular side cutters would'nt cut the hook point off. Point to this story ?? Always land the fish with a big enough net, or cradle. Always unhook em before any pics are taken. Keep extra pliars, and mini bolt cutters on board if your after Pike, Muskie. Believe me - it hurts - a lot. Really - a lot !! MIKE
  18. Regular reels are fine, I'd go with the Trilene XL it frays a little easier than some, so it needs retying more, but it is nicer to use in the cold. "ice fishing" line in my experience is CRAP.
  19. I was doing a search the other day (yahoo canada) and up popped an "anti-angling" site. They are well funded and out to put a stop to sportfishing if they can. One of their big targets is the concept of "catch and release" fishing. In-Fisherman show and mag in the US has been harping on this for years and I think they're right. Anglers as a group need to get away from the "catch and release" lingo and talk up "selective harvest". I know there are probably anglers out there who never eat fish - I can't understand that but whatever - but if you catch a fish and determine that it is definately going to die, then it is your DUTY as an angler to keep and clean and prepare that fish for food. If you don't want to eat it give it to someone else perhaps. Fish in our lakes and rivers are a precious resource, and not something to be wasted. I operate a charter business, and I eat a lot of fish, as do a lot of my friends. Many of my customers do not want, or are unable to keep fish - tourists - and if the fish will not survive I keep and prepare those for the table. Here's a recipe for your next "Selective Harvest" Any fish filet. Lay filet out and place a 1/2" strip of cold smoked salmon down the length, place a 1/2 stip of your favorite cheese on top of that - herbed havarti, halapeno jack, etc - place 2 aspargus sprigs crosswise on top, get a big box of toothpicks and roll the filet up. Seal it up as good as posiible in a roll - 4 or 5 toothpicks. Brush lightly with olive oil, barbque over indirect heat until rolls start to flake apart. YUMMY Works great with pike, walleye,
  20. Abu 6500 You can get them in left or right hand. I have 2 or 3 of them that are approaching 20 yrs of use. Still in excellent condition. You need to put new drag washers in every 6 or 7 yrs. I use them with 65 LB Power Pro for big baits, and 17Lb Trilene Mono for bucktails. Very solid reliable reel. Price is decent. [email protected]
  21. I use mini bolt cutters. to cut the hooks out. Just snip off the hook that is embedded, and unhooking is way faster and much easier on the fish. I leave them in a large net in the water while unhooking. If you hoist them into the boat they will spin and roll and tangle in the net. Make sure hooks are out before lifting for photos. I made the mistake ONCE of having a 17lb fish attached to my hand - 1 5/0 trble in him and 1 5/0 treble through the back of my hand and out the palm. It hurt. A lot. [email protected]
  22. Into my 2nd yr with a 200HP on a 22' boat. Motor is awesome, less fuel consumption than an eqaul size fourstroke. Quiet, no smoke, sips oil. If it holds together, will be best 1 yet. did hear of a 2007, with 500 plus hrs, that blew the powerhead. Guy that was chartering daily on Erie. [email protected]
  23. EVERYONE WHO WETS A LINE SHOULD JOIN. OFAH IS THE ONLY PROVINCIAL ORGANIZATION THAT FIGHTS FOR YOUR RIGHTS AS A FISHERMAN, BY MAKING SURE THEY ARE IN THE GOVERNMENTS FACE ON EVERY ISSUE AFFECTING FISHING IN ONTARIO. THEY ARE A LOBBY GROUP, AND MAKE NO MISTAKE THERE ARE A BUNCH OF OTHER LOBBY GROUPS OUT THERE TRYING TO GET FISHING AND HUNTING BANNED - LIKE COMPLETELY. ORGANIZATIONS LIKE "P3TA" SPEND LOTS OF MONEY LOBBYING YOUR GOVERNMENTS TO REDUCE AND REMOVE FISHING IN ONTARIO. THEY RUN CAMPAIGNS IN YOUR CHILDRENS SCHOOLS THAT SAY FISHING IS TORTURE. THEY RUN VERY EXPENSIVE MAGAZINE ADS. THEY ARE A VERY POWERFUL GROUP AND OFAH IS ONE OF THE FEW THAT'S LOBBYING AGAINST THEM TO THE GOVERNMENT TO PROTECT YOUR "RIGHTS" AS FISHERMEN AND HUNTERS. IF YOU DON'T AGREE WITH HOW THEY RUN THINGS, JOIN UP AND JUMP IN AND RUN THINGS YOURSELF. THEY ARE ALWAYS LOOKING FOR PEOPLE TO GET INVOLVED. GROUPS LIKE "P3TA" MUST BE FOUGHT AGAINST WITH LOBBY DOLLARS. SUCKS DOES'NT IT. BUT THAT IS THE WAY YOUR GOVERNMENT WORKS, AND MOST POLITICIANS IN THIS COUNTRY ( NOT ALL) WOULD'NT KNOW HOW TO USE A FISHING ROD.
  24. TJ Site looks great. I see you have my Charter business listed, so it must be great! lol Maybe a section for "Regulations and Licences" It seems we need to carry a briefcase full of documents nowadays, to go on a hunting and fishing weekend. A lot of people new to the great outdoors and its sports have a hard time catching up with all the regs. I see a lot of questions on sites trying to find out about trailers, boats registraion. Licencing questions. Buying used boats/motors etc. fishing regs, seasons, areas etc. maybe a list of links to gov't depts, and info on such. [email protected]
