  1. The doctors didn't think of prescribing a sleep study because your daughter probably didn't present the classic symptoms associated with sleep apnea (loud snoring, always feeling tired, etc). If she did and was diagnosed, there would also be a chance that the doctor would be forced to have her driver's license revoked unless she agreed to CPAP therapy (public safety issue with falling asleep at the wheel). I suffer from severe sleep apnea. Since I've been diagnosed, I've been using a CPAP, and it's made a considerable difference in my life. Yes, it's a pain to wear the mask, and probably something you never get completely used to -- but hey, now I can get up at 4am fully refreshed and get on the water for that early morning bite. Anyway, the government does subsidize your first CPAP machine if purchased locally through an approved vendor (who will help with the paperwork). If she has private insurance (through her employer or otherwise), then that should take care of almost all of the remaining balance, depending on coverage. However -- if she doesn't have private coverage, it's worth looking into getting a sleep apnea machine shipped from the US, which is legal, although she won't be entitled to receive a government subsidy. That said, I believe that Canadian prices are heavily inflated (because of the subsidy). You have more choice (with better machines with more features and more control over your machine), and the costs are substantially less -- even without subsidy. It's an option worth considering if cost is an issue, or if your daughter eventually wants a backup machine, replacement or just more control over her therapy. If she's interested -- make sure she holds on to her prescription (or makes a copy of it if she gets her first machine locally). She'll need it as a condition of purchase since it's a medical device.
  2. Because if they are alive, there is always the risk of escape/release into a habitat where they don't necessarily belong. With that also brings any infections or diseases they may have picked up from their local waters as well. Best intentions don't count when you're trying to mitigate risk. This is why it's such a big deal when people are caught transporting live asian carp, snakehead or other invasive species across the border. It's "intended" for sale as food -- but if the truck crashes and the fish escape, or someone buys and releases into a local stream, "intent" doesn't count for much.
  3. Any of the Angling Specialties locations in Mississauga, Concord and Scarborough would be a good source for live minnows and such. Angling Specialties 325 Central Pky W, Mississauga, ON L5B 3X9, Canada +1 905-275-4972 ‎ Angling Specialties 3251 Kennedy Rd, Scarborough, ON M1V 2J9, Canada +1 416-609-0804 ‎ Angling Specialties 2104 Highway 7, Concord, ON L4K 2S9, Canada +1 905-660-9707 LeBaron and Bass Pro also have worm/nightcrawler fridges too, if that's what you're into.
  4. I tie an overhand knot on the tag end and then pull the clip down to the knot. The weight is secure, but if it snags, it will pull off and I'll only lose the weight.
  5. Saw your post on TT. Very creative! I wanna see the Darth Maul version!
  6. +1 Sound advice. I'd also recommend that you look into getting a wading belt as well at the very least. Should you ever take a spill, the belt will help prevent that icy water from getting in, which is uncomfortable at best -- but also a potential safety hazard.
  7. I think that store is called "Bass City Bait and Tackle." It's in a little strip mall right near the railroad tracks on Hwy 7. I've stopped by it a couple of times (my dentist is in the same plaza), but never bought anything, even though they seem to have some nice stuff that isn't so easy to find locally. They definitely have minnows for sale there.
  8. Sweet! I'd pay money just to see that thing in person!
  9. Chronzy's batter tastes good because it has MSG. If I recall correctly, Fish Crisp doesn't. Of course, it's not that hard to make your own...
  10. Another lesson is never to allow companies to automatically deduct payments directly from your account. This is a dangerous practice, but companies offer this as a "convenience" so you won't have a good sense of just how much money they're taking from you. Out of sight, out of mind, and out of money. The other issue is in situations where you're canceling service or membership. In the past, (albeit with a different fitness club), they "conveniently" forgot to discontinue withdrawing funds from my wife's account, even after she canceled membership in person. It took months to get the money back -- and you can bet that they didn't offer to pay compensation for their indiscretion / stealing.
  11. +1 for what Rick said. I'd question the legality of the contract since your daughter hasn't reached the age of majority. And yes, GF is in the business of ripping people off.
  12. I have one too. Feel free to ping me. Cheers.
  13. A sensitive tip could lead to premature hookset.
  14. It is highly effective against insects, but you should be aware that Permethrin is highly toxic to fish and aquatic life. So, maybe not a good idea to use it or wear Permethrin infused clothing if you're expecting to handle fish...
  15. In this year's edition of the regs, there are some specific exceptions that have been clarified. For example, on parts of the Upper Credit, it now says "one single-pointed barbless hook" instead of "single barbless hook.". So, the barbless treble loophole has now been closed in those instances.
  16. Gagnon Sports in Oshawa has a small selection of Megabass lures.
  17. Not trying to be a jerk or anything (and knowing very little about guns and where to shoot them in general), but seeing as you live near the Bass Pro, you could probably ask the staff for some good locations on where to test it out.
  18. Not sure that I would consider this a "favourite," since I've only used the one, but I've caught walleye in the past with the Storm Wildeye Live Goby, which I presume is a swimbait of sorts. Since gobies and sculpin are found mostly along lake and river bottoms (use it areas where gobies have been reported), it's fairly easy to fish: Chuck it out, and drag it slowly back along the bottom. It's not something I'll regularly include in my arsenal, but that's just me and my preference for light, versatile tackle.
  19. Although I don't personally own a Cumara (I prefer 2-piece rods for travel convenience), I think it's difficult to go wrong with Shimano's Cumara line. On paper, they seem to be a good value for a high-performance rod. High quality components, light weight and a modern, yet understated appearance, I'm sure it would be a pleasure to fish all day. Plus, a solid warranty should give you the confidence and peace of mind to fish it aggressively. And dammit -- you deserve to treat yourself to something nice once in a while. Am I right?
  20. It hasn't changed that much. There are pedestrian bridges in the park, as well as below Barbertown road. However, you were never supposed to be able to access the ladder or dam via land, since both sides of the bank are privately held. You may have done so in the past, but technically, you were trespassing if you reached it by land.
  21. You can reach the dam by wading up or downstream. As far as I know, there are no legal issues with this approach, as long as you don't use the bank on either side. Another way is to volunteer with the CRAA when they're in fish-lifting mode, which is typically when the steelhead make their runs upriver. You'll meet some great folks and learn a lot while you're there.
  22. Check with the Credit River Anglers Association. They are the organization that is driving most of the rehabilitation work around the Credit, including managing the dam and fish ladder in Streetsville, and coordinating the transfer of fish above the dam in Norval. Also, the Norval dam is a privately-owned structure, so it will continue to exist for the forseeable future. However, there are plans for a fishway to be built so that fish can bypass the structure, similar to what's currently in place for Streetsville -- including the ability to manually operate in order to block or separate fish. I suspect that there will also be a new barrier built above the spawning areas in order to protect the indigenous brook trout populations.
  23. Two more from out west: http://www.thefishinhole.com/ http://www.berrysbait.com/ Not sure you'll get a break on shipping with either of these outfits, though. Surprisingly enough, I get things much faster when I order from Japan than when I order from US or Canada.
