A couple nice long-beards! Congrats to you and your son. That hen decoy looks really good, what kind is it?

Very nice, great vid guys. I've made that walk before myself, God's country for sure.

Trout: Hardwater to Softwater to Underwater

Great report and some truly fantastic pics!! Great news from the Dr's as well. -
Read my mind. Top-water and jerkbaits I prefer single strand. For trolling, long 4-5' fluoro leader 150lb.

Look in the States. Lots of selection, lower mileage sleds and easy to bring back. And the CDN $$ doesn't hurt either!
-
Good stuff Joey. Looks like a good year for you and Paul. Awesome boat, and love seeing the muskie too.

Grab the April issue of Ontario OUT OF DOORS magazine. Gord Ellis has an ice-out brookie article in there. I know minnowbaits, spinners and spoons are staples. Never tried jigging. Good luck on your Quebec trip.

Nice cats Tibbs! I've been out with Steve before too. He sure knows that section of water for big cats. Congrats on getting into WLU. I did my undergrad just down the street at Univ. of Waterloo.

Training grounds! Looks like the kids had a blast Mike.

If he's the guy at Slate Falls, then yes. They keep a few planes on ski's on the ice down there and it's a busy float plane base in the summer.

Thanks guys! Wayne, there's a spot for your plane down by the ice runway in town. Nice and close so we can fly out everyday to a different lake!

The ice fishing season is winding down in NW Ontario so I thought it was time to get caught up with a report of the second half of my season. Overall it was one of he best years on the ice for me. I spent more time chasing lakers this year. I'm the kind of fisherman who would rather catch 1 or 2 big fish then 20 or 50 panfish. So lakers fit the bill and they're a good winter substitute for muskies too. Of course I still love walleye and the late ice bite didn't disappoint. Fishing in 25-30' for walleye during late ice you never know what you're going to catch. Smallies, pike, trout, whitefish, burbot. It's a fun time of year on the ice up here. I'll let the pictures do the talking. Enjoy! This next guy isn't the longest trout I've caught but look at how thick it is! Pretty fun to crack a PB through the ice. 20" smallmouth. Double header trout with my buddy Colin. We were both fishing for walleye with Lindy Darters so this was a real coincidence/bonus!

Whitefish and lakers again...slow day...but we got some!

Nice, that spot is a good one for sure. Some of the guys have done well there in the past and when a couple other spots were slow we headed over there while it was still early. Good decision! I've been trying a lot of spots out there lately, the back corner (SW) was just ok but apparently it really goes off at times. The smelt in front of the creek (main access) are so thick you can't even use a graph/flasher. I've heard about a hump in behind the big island in the centre of the lake, they say it's good for trout. Running out of season though! Take care! -

That is funny Simon... I was there today and fishing was awesome all morning when it was CLOUDY and SNOWING.... sun comes out, fishing dies! Is that spot you moved to basically straight East of the reef? Kinda on the inside of a point that leads into a bay? If so, we were there today as well and the fish were still there. 42-58'. -
Wow, you've been busy! Some great pics and great fish. That one ice laker is black! I thought we got some dark lakers up here but I've never see one so dark before.
-
Great pics, awesome colours on the rainbows. Neat to see the elk, I had no idea they were in that area.
-
Good stuff Jay, too bad it closes March 31st... esp this year with the extended winter.
-
Find the 'Red Matty' on Lac Seul in July/August and catch walleye all day long!

Thanks everyone!

Thanks guys. Be sure to keep checking out my website - the homepage is a blog that I will regularly update with hunting and fishing reports. Don't worry though, I'll still share pics here on OFC too.

Awesome!

Nice report Tyler, some solid fishing there for sure! Noticed in that one pic a darter (I think) tipped with a minnow head on the tail treble? I've never tried that... but it sure seems to work. That walleye inhaled the bait!

First off..... TILLER and ALUMACRAFT. That would be my choice. Like Sinker, I'm a tiller guy till I die! I love backtrolling for walleye and love the open space for muskies. I am willing to sacrifice creature comforts for fishability. Wiser's boat is an AWESOME RIG! I agree w/ Raf too, if you're going 16' there's not enough space for a console. I once worked for a lodge that ran 18' Lund Pro V tillers. After 5 seasons the boats were beat up so badly and they took on a lot of water when backtrolling. They switched to Alumacraft and the difference is unbelievable. They don't show the wear and tear on the interior and best of all, they still backtroll into big waves without taking on water.
