Norm I have done that too, rubber O rings, surgical tubing, clear plastic tubing, heat shrink tubing. A hassle and can catch weeds a bit more. Rubber O rings have worked the best for me. Hooked bigger bass and pike where a direct tied lie just slid on the shaft of the spinner bait and bent the heck out of the wire. Titanium wire spinner baits not much of a problem other than cost.

Very few lures that I tied directly to the line, usually used a snap on everything but R bend spinner baits and Buzz Baits, I tried to avoid them. Just always felt most lures get a little more action with a snap on to add a little more freedom of movement.

Those will work, I made my own that I cn clamp to a 6x6 in the barn, I also use a piece of cloth or paper towel to keep tension on the line but dampened it to prevent heat build up.

Don`t like to see bail outs, but I sure don`t want to see a depression. It is not just the American auto companies that are hurting, it is a world wide auto problem. The sales are down drastically for all of the auto companies foreign and domestic. Foreign governments are bailing out their auto companies, do we just let ours close up and let them control the auto markets when things pick up again? Goodyear has annouced massive restructuring also because tire sales have dropped. So the trickle down effect of the auto industry problems continues. States here are going broke, they can`t give their state income tax refunds due to lack of cash, lol I wonder if that means I don`t have to pay mine?

mudbutt years ago we used the penn 209s up north with braided Nylon or Dacron line, didn`t care for that heavy of mono either.

It`s legal here in Ohio, if your keeping the fish to eat anyway why wouldn`t it be? Also used to cut small strips of the white belly, scale them and use for more perch. Also used to cut emerald shiners in half.

I think the reason for mono line is the level wind opening, braid may cut it over time. Mono would groove the guide on the old stainless steel eyes over time, so would the old braided nylon and Dacron. Most newer reels have ceramic or special hardened line openings and guides.

Unless you are a professional angler a lot of the hype over different combos is just that, hype. A medium action rod and reel, your choice baitcaster or spinning will catch and land most fish. I do like a little softer action for throwing crankbaits, but I use mono for line so it`s not a big deal. I do like a flipping stick and baitcaster for fishing cover, but also use other combos at times. Most of the time I have a medium action rod (fast tip) in my hands, casting or spinning, for flipping or pitching a medium heavy. Specialty angling, Salmon, Muskie probably requires different combos just because of the size and fighting ability of the fish, for muskie also factor in the size of the lure. I am sort of tall 6' 2" I just prefer a longer rod 6'6" to 7' but have bought and used shorter ones if they felt comfortable. Did a lot of bass fishing, when your making 500 to 1000 casts a day the rod in your hands will probably be the most comfortable one. For trolling give me a baitcaster on a 7 foot rod every time.

Here in Ohio studded tires were legal, I don`t do enough driving to worry about them any more. Tire had pre made hole in them and most tire shops could insert the studs for a few bucks a tire. Hard to beat on icey roads, probably the only thing better is chains but a hassle to put on and remove. I always used to use studded tires on my cars in the winter. Points aren`t sharp, looks kind of like a pop rivet, hardened. LOL never seen a shad? Wait till you experience one of their die offs. They seem to be severely affected by water temperature and can die off in the thousands, smell, and if your using a lure with exposed hooks you get to remove smelly dead shad from them.

We have one here in Cleveland also, and like Sebastian mention the cost of space is a factor. My local tackle shop has their own show in their store. They bring in their own speakers geared to what most of his customers are truly interested in. Some of the big name local talent. Mostly geared to bass fishing and Lake Erie, walleye, steelhead. I also think he is about right with the 5k number, a big number to a smaller local shop, and if you are not going to profit that much from it? It allows him to save money the week of the show and pass the savings on to his customers. No worrying about keeping the store open and staffing at the show, costs of set up and displays at the show, travel time, although his shop is within a 15 minute drive to the show. I haven`t been to the local show in years, it was a better plan for me and my buddies to get together and take a drive to NetCraft in Toledo, Bass Pro in Auburn Hills Mi, and Cabela`s in Dundee. Admission fees and parking to the show covered the price of gas. The show here was the place to go if you were planning a trip, looking for a new place to go because the one here not only had a lot of Canadian camps, but places from most states from here to Florida. The internet has had an effect on that. Seemed like our show just started to look more and more like a flea market that you had to pay to enter.

Nice job EHG! Used to catch a gizzard shad every once in a while Crappie fishing on bays off of Lake Erie, every one was foul hooked so I believe you are right on them eating plants. Nice sized whities!
