save your money and leave the minnows I would take a large 1/2 and 1/2 and and pack of white zoom tubes. start with the spoon, work the bottom do you have a finder?
-
you can use a small cooler to store your battery in so it wont get too cold, it will also double as a case for your finder. My x-67 spends the whole winter outside, I only bring it in to charge it and Im going on 6 years with no battery problems. Aaron I am also curious why you turn your ping speed down? I have to agree with you settings make all the difference. I have no problem marking a small williams spoon in 115fow on simcoe. If you cant see your lure your wasting time. I also much prefer having a realtime bar with history as opposed to the flasher mode.

I have to agree with you simcoe lakers do have a silver/pale look to them. Any Lakers I have caught in the northern lakes are much darker like the ones you fella's catch must have something to do with the water

Thanks everyone I also use smoke coloured from time to time.

I was feeling a little under the weather this weekend but I tried not to let it stop me from getting out and having a day on the ice. I got a call the night before from a long time buddy asking if I could take him out for some Laker action. He had never caught one himself through the ice and was really excited to get out and onto some fish. So excited that I woke up to his headlights shining through my bedroom window. After getting my act together we headed out through the storm towards simcoe. Thank god the weather cleared up as we got closer to the lake. Met up with a group of buddys and headed out off the North shore of Kemp. We set up around 75fow. Not too much going on down below. A few schools of herring and some totally uninterested fish. Time to make a move. Off we went, found a nice spot in 85fow and through up the camp. Fish came few and far between but they did seem to have a little more interest. Made the switch from spoons to tubes and bingo. Showed Andrew how to work the tube to get a reaction and not 5 mins later "fish on" his first Laker. About 15 mins later I was checking on some of the other guys when I hear him yell again "fish on" Looks like he's picking up the technique just fine. Headed back to the hut to try and get one on the ice myself. After a couple missed fish I finally get the hooks into one. It was a slow morning but we finally got into a few. ended up with 7 iced and a bunch missed. All and all not a bad day on the lake. Ryan Andrew's first laker #2 His big fish of the day, almost 6lbs A few for me

some good looking whities you got there!!!

I caught a couple of spineless puffers in flordia, weird fish. After I let them go they would float around for a bit like a beachball.

Its the same everywhere, inspections, inspections and more inspections. Its not that these house are not built to code. Its the crap type of materials that code is allowing the builders to use. Everything is scaled down to a min. Min. material = max profits. so at the end of the day the house passes the inspection. but doors are hung wrong, trim is falling off and the joints look like you cut them with your teeth, tile is uneven the list goes on. this type of stuff is NOT inspected. This is detail work that is typically rushed through. The code is the same through out the province and most of the time the further you get up north the fewer number of inspectors there are, contractors get to know them well and get treated accordingly. As far as licenses go what does it really prove? The house has to pass code or it cant be finished. just because you can frame a house to code doesnt mean that you have a great eye for detail and that is what is going to make or break your new home. People dont see the frame work they see the detail and finish work. Does a license actually make a contractor more qualified??

-6lb mono -people still use minnows?? ( med ones are best, smalls get ste up by the herring) - chumming is not needed, some do it some dont it works either way but I wouldnt worry about it - single or spreader. better chance of lakers with the single but they both work. - fish the bottom, if you dont you'll be catching more herring then anything else.

This is exactly what people dont know, just how badly sub-division homes are built. I have been in the trade for as long as Ive worked. Ive built both customs and subdivision homes. The difference is night and day!!!! Most subdivision homes are as entry level as a house can be. Everything is done to a minimum so the builders can save money. Even high end subdivisions are questionable. I know when I was 17 I was heading a framing crew in homes that sold for over $300 000 As long as they are built that seems to be all that matters. Im currently working on a nice custom home. Every 2x6 in the house is a strightened 2x8. We work to 1/32 tolerence on outside detail! mind you the budget is in the millions. I also do a lot of reno work on older farm houses. The problem with these is that nothing is ever how it should be. a square corner or plumb wall almost never exists. Lots of time the home owners dont have endless budgets to fix every little thing going wrong in their 150 yr old house. So what do you do? somethings cant be fixed the way mike fixes everything, so you do your best. You make it functional, you make it look good and you make it last. I am NOT a licensed carpenter but I do just as high quality of work, and Ive worked with many licensed guys that I wouldnt hire on my crew Ryan

Hit simcoe up on sat and sun. Fishing was great on sat steady action for everyone in the group. Dan and I ended up with 6 lakers a pair of whities and what seemed like a endless number of herring. Dans whitie went 5.5lbs not a bad start. We only fished spoons. The other fellas did well with minnows managing there limits in lakers. Sun, I met up with Steve Rowbotham and we hit the lake with a few other friends. Started off slow but after fine tuning our location and a few cell phone calls back and forth we found some fish. Everyone managed a couple between 1-3lbs. Hit some nice fish in the 6-8lbs range and a pig that went 12lbs but could have been fatter had she been on the feed! another great weekend on the water. Call Lou ( the guy who makes them) direct, 705-737-4819 is his shop #. explain to him that you are in the US and cant get them and he will ship you a bunch. You looking at around $6 depending on size. I'll mention to him tomorrow that you might call. They are awesome jigs Ryan

Still waiting for that invite bud, I'd say you owe me being as I dragged you around simcoe and gave up my waypoints last year not to mention pulling your suv out of that pressure crack of course

Its been a long wait but its time to get back to Simcoe for some lakers and Whities. Headed out this morning and fished Kemp for about a hour. we managed 5 Lakers between the 2 of us between 1.5-8lbs All fish tight on bottom in 105fow on a williams. ice seemed good, about 4" of black ice a few cracks here and there. By no means does that speak for the whole lake. Only had the cellphone sry for the bad pic Ryan

What do you use when fishing for white fish?
rhare replied to Fishing 24/7's topic in General Discussion
Williams ice jigs in both sizes. dont add a pearl or a dropper. just like it is out of the pack. 1/2&1/2 hammered is a killer. its my go to lure. works great for both lakers and whities. gotta agree with Slyatv the blue eyed williams is also a killer, He gave one to my friend and she caught 4 whities over 5lbs her first time on the ice!! Heres a couple more first timers out at slys compound both fish on the blue eyed. Badboyz jigs are also deadly. black and green with a small green tube, black and silver, black and gold with matching tubes are all deadly. hardest part is getting a good jig on but when you figure out the lure fish after fish. Dan with the first of the season last year on a blk and green badboyz. pearl white tubes 3" work great as well. Dan with a nice whitie taken on a stright tube People still fish with minnows??? -
Thanks everyone whenever you want to hit the ice give me a shout The pic doesnt do much for the fish, but its the one with the partial nudity. We put it on the scale and its accurate to a pound. we got 5 over 30lbs that morning.

Well Im up early and for once dont have to go to work. So I thought I would put together a little picture review of my 08' season. It was a busy year fishing for me. Spent Jan-closer fishing Simcoe. What a great lake. I had way too many double digit days of lakers and whities out on the ice. first day out was jan 5th as you can see not much ice but we did get some whities Then it was off to Joe until break up. Another great lake some real pigs in there. It was a great winter and I hated to see it go but nothing better then some spring trout'in to break the blues. perfect spring, late run left lots of fish in the local tribs, and no crowds what a bonus. Still catching steel in june on the Niagara! Caught a few eyes this spring, we had been doing some night fishing for big girls but only managed one my buddy caught and released the fish but its a nice pic so I'll include it. Also bounced the niagara for my first time for eyes. Next came the carp fishing, wow did we ever get some pigs this year. it wasnt uncommon to hook 15-20 in a hour or two. my biggest weighted 40lbs what a pig! I have never been that big of a bass guy but I did get out and do some bass'in this year picked this guy up bassin one day. I got back into rigging this year and man am I hooked. I cant wait to get back out in the boat on the big water. didnt get any hugh kings but did get some nice bows. two going 15lbs. took a lot of friends and first timers out everyone had a blast! made it out to simcoe a couple times and did very well for lakers. fun on light tackle finished up the year bouncing for browns and steelies got a few nice fish. well I hope to get out again before the year ends but who knows hope you enjoyed the review After seeing the pics I cant wait to do it again in 09' Ryan
