Spent the weekend in the near north once again trying my luck for some Lakers. What a great weekend to be out on the ice. The sun was bright, temps were perfect. ( even though I still fished in my hut!) The fish seemed off but we still managed to ice a bunch. Lost a few hogs to boot. All fish came on spoons, I gave up with minnows long ago and only use hardware. mostly Williams icejigs in 1/2 and 1/2. Couple of my buddies missed fish on minnows but just little guys.Something new for me was watching a big laker through my hole take swipes at my spoon maybe 4ft down in 120fow. he kept missing the spoon and after a min or so lost interest. It was a really cool to watch. Next morning I have the same thing happen, only a little smaller fish. didn't get him either. That being said. I caught all but one of my fish between 50-15fow in 120fow. I found that the bigger more aggressive fish where cursing higher up. Everything that marked high on the finder would chase the lure and hit. Hope I can make one more trip for some splake next weekend, weather dependent. If I dont not a bad way to end the year. setting things up first one of the day, he had a fat belly. Dan with one A nice surprise at the end of the day. It was a heavy fish between 8-10. quick pic and away she goes. When I first it at the hole it was covered with parasites. looked like weeds gowing off its back down towards its tail. I told my buddy to tail it and he looked at me stright faced and said "are you serious" after a few more runs and some line wrap they all most all came off. My friend had one to the hole in the middle of the week that was twice as thick I just couldnt get my hand on the fish. It was hugh at least 15lbs. Then the hook catches in the ice and the fish rips itself free. she doesnt fish much so I think I was more disappointed then she was. Ryan

Can someone provide me with some studies on C&R
rhare replied to KyleM's topic in General Discussion
heres a bunch of info for ya, the C&R debate never ends good luck. http://www.acuteangling.com/Reference/C&RMortality.html ---------mortality rate http://members.shaw.ca/amuir/catch_and_release.htm ----- catch and release http://www.bcadventure.com/adventure/angli...chrelease.phtml ----- catch and release -
with big fish you often have to play them out just to get them in the net!. Smaller fish species, I could see your point. A quick scoop and there out. nets have become much improved over the years with new nets that are much safer for the fish. years ago I would have disagreed, but so much push for catch and release angling has forced companies to make more fish friendly nets. either way its about the fish being safely released

Headed up North on Friday to do some Laker fishing. Been feeling a little down since simcoe closed, thought this might be a good picker-uper. Ice conditions where pretty good. No snow or slush on the ice.Decided to take the truck out and cover some more water then we usually do. First place we stopped I managed to entice a small laker with the williams. We just didnt have the fish marking on the finder so we moved on. next place was a bit deeper and had lots of fish moving through. I managed another little one on the spoon. My buddy Dan was working a tube jig when he got smashed. As the fish came to the hole I noticed it had about a 6-8" laker hanging out of its mouth as well as the tube jig. what a pig! Too bad the little laker fell out, would have made for a cool pic.It was a great fight and ended up being about 5-6lbs range. quick pic and back she goes. Again it slowed so we moved to a steep drop off. I landed 2 more smaller lakers this time on the tube. we missed a few more, all and all not to bad of a day. we had no minnows, but saw most people were using minnows with success. One thing I did notice was the fish had parasites all over them, and this is the second lake in the region I have seen this. I tried to take pics but they didnt turn out all that well. The parasite's almost looked like little magots around the fin areas of the fish. What are these?

Should he put the PFD ontop of the float suit he's wearing in his profile pic? its funny how ice conditions posts always end up getting a bunch of responses with great tips from guys who dont ice fish??? then they proceed to tell us how unsafe the ice is, even if they havent been out first hand. not just saying you GCD. Fact of the matter is you probably have a greater chance of getting hurt driving in the winter to you fishing spot then getting hurt or killed on the ice.

I take it your looking for more useful information that what was provided? you have a PM

Dont worry Wayne Im swimming at that end of the gene pool too Its just as dangerous driving sleds or bikes out on the ice. How many people have hit pressure cracks on sleds and been hurt in the last week alone? Lots of other people have been in the same situation this year. I pulled a guy out of a crack a few weeks ago. Its the risk yo take driving out there. I had no real problems and I drove all over the lake. Like has been said before wrong place wrong time. I miss it already -

rhare replied to steverowbotham's topic in General Discussion
As rough as it looks its one of the #1 sports for sportsmenship. I have fought 2 pro fights and still keep in touch with both guys I fought not to mention tons of other I met at the events. Ive trained with people from all sorts of team and most welcome you in the door of the club. It really stinks that us Ontario guys have to travel to other provinces just to get in the cage. -

Awsome Laker Shelly!! Bite was off for us yesterday too. After our move we did find a few active fish. heres a pic of my buddy's first fish through the ice ever, 7lbs even. from saturday. Ryan

Wayne I'm thinking the 15,16th weekend or the 22,23rd. I must say after seeing your laker, I had to go do you have a # for him wayne? thanks Ryan
-
Does anyone know if I can hire a guide for a day to take me to some spots on the lake? I have my own gear and sled but have never been to the lake before. thanks in advance Ryan
-
Made it out to the "spot" on wed. The group as you can see from Shelly's report were already into the fish. we set up and no longer then 5min and my friend chris had her first whitie of her life through the hole a nice 5lbs'er we made out well getting 4 fish each and loosing a few more. I finally got a 10+ lbs laker quick shot and back down the hole. what a great day to be on the water. no definatly no shortage of fish
-
What a awsome day!!! I can see my truck and hut in the background Lol Those 8lbs whities are sweet!!! Cant wait to do it again. Ryan
-
http://www.simcoefishingadventures.com read plenty of good reports, always seems to be on the fish.

As sinker said, lots of places to walk out many are only half a mile out. Fish are moving shallower now. Lots of guys fishing 40fow for whities. Me a the fellas I fish with almost always walk out and we've iced over 100 lakers this year, tightlines Ryan

Well its been a great couple of weeks of fishing on Lake Simcoe and this Saturday wasn't any different. Met up with Gbaysteel(Dan) Wee Scot (Alex) and the wee scot's neighbor Bruce for a day of Laker fishing. Got a little spoiled with Alex's sled. Not used to not having to pull the hut out by hand! Lake conditions where poor at best, must have been a foot or so of slush out there. found a nice dry spot to set up the huts and the day was under way. we decided to have a big fish pool just to make this interesting. The fish were bangin' we iced over 25 lakers and lost a pile more. I had a great day with the spoons, stopped counting at 12 iced lakers and was losing them left right and center.Fished 110fow. Alex ended up winning the big fish pool with his first of the day a 4lbser. Fish don't seem to be that big but there are lots of em. heres some pics enjoy hut prep double#1 One happy fella! Alex with his big fish of the day
