The Blue Back herring are not a typical "baitfish" to get to full spawning size they do require a fairly long life cycle. I believe they live around 6 years or so, but I will double check. The herring population on Simcoe is in rebound for sure. As already stated the MNR has only found evidence of 2 year classes of steady reproduction so until they are completely sustainable don't expect to be keeping any. The reason they are so important to the Lake Simcoe watershed is they are the main forage in the lake for big lake trout. Herring represent a very important part of the lake trouts reproductive cycle on simcoe. The same weight of bait in herring contains 3 times the essential nutrient that lake trout require to properly develop to mature spawning age then the same weight in smelt. With the lower phosphate levels in the lake the algae has subsided enough to allow for the herring to again spawn successfully. The spawning shoals the lake trout use are also able to hold enough oxygen to allow natural lake trout reproduction over that last 10 years. Basically the natural reproduction of both herring and Lake trout on Lake Simcoe is still in its infancy. I wouldn't expect to see an open season on herring in the near future.

I've done it 3 times now and I used a lawyer each time. It was quite easy being they did everything I just had to sign and that was that. By the sounds of the slack party on the other end I would use a lawer to make sure everything is done right.. just my .02

Questions on boat sonar, Lowrance, simrad, ray marine
rhare replied to muskyhart's topic in General Discussion
I use raymarine and I LOVE it... The major downfall of a ray system is the cost. BUT this year they just came out with the new e7 and let me tell you this thing is amazing and at a great price point. Unlike most of raymarines other high end units the e7 has a built in sounder so you don't have to buy a costly DSM modal to run your sonar. With the C,E,G series you had to add the DSM to the MFD so it was able to read the transducer. The picture quality is amazing and the graphs are very accurate. The sonar on a raymarine is much better then a Lowrance, I have owned both and like both just feel that the ray is more detailed and accurate. The e7 also has a built in GPS again eliminating the external modual. where it gets really cool is in the integration... The e7 has a app. you can use with any iphone or ipad to make them into extra displays If I'm not mistaken you can even change your auto pilot setting right from your iphone! The unit is touch screen. I'm not a huge fan of touch screen because of fingerprints on the display but it doesnt seem to be a big issue. The e7 is leaps and bounds above anything else out there right now and I think with the lower price point then on most raymarine products your going to start seeing these units on a lot more rigs.. -
regular first aid training is not enough. Min requirement is Marine Basic first Aid. You must also register your boat with transport canada as a commercial vessel. All working vessels must have a "C" number. This includes anyone that is doing anything on the water with a boat to make money.. joining a club like the Ontario Sport Guiding Association will help you with insurance as well as with dates for classes and understanding any Transport Canada regulations you may have trouble with. There is a lot of start up costs and it takes time to build up your client list. If you want to do it don't give up it's far from easy...

Hey everyone Well the ice season has been dismal to say the least. The ice conditions are really unstable and not much of a surprise with the weather we've been having. I have been out checking the ice and playing a bit and was fortunate to get into some decent lakers already this season. Xzone swammers and Bass magnet tubes in pearl have been our best producers. here's a bit of Laker porn... Here are a couple video's for anyone looking to pass some time... Lets hope the season gets going sooner or later... tightlines Ryan

I'm Agonizing Over This Boat Buying Decision

Princecraft!! Since your not going Lund... -
Shingles and siding are fine no permit needed for replacing them. The only time permits are needed for that type of work is when it becomes structural. If you want to replace the poles in the shed then yes you will need a permit. Really you will be opening a can of worms. 1. You will have to provide a site plan showing your lot, allowances to lot lines, size of the construction. 2. a multy view drawing of the building that you plan on renovating with accurate measurements and brief explanation of how you plan on doing the construction. Not every building department is the same but that's the basic idea... Many times old out buildings, decks and porches where just thrown up and the footings/foundation.... didn't really exist. It ends up being pretty much a rebuild by the time your done. My suggestion would be to reinforce the framing, maybe add some extra posts? (hard to invasion what you have for sure) or try to do it with out the permit and see if you get caught...

It all depends on where in cuba you are going, some areas have no flats with in 2 hours. Amazing fishery for bones, tarpon, snook and cuda if your in the right areas

The Niagara is an amazing fishery. Paul a a great guide and a good friend of mine, you won't be disappointed booking a day with him. I set up a trip for a guy sub-contract for and tagged along on sunday. He wanted to target lakers and he got lakers all right. Lots of em! here's a few pics..

I completely disagree... I was up in the area today and plenty of lakes still have open water and the ones that are froze are VERY inconsistant. There is from 1-4" and the lakes we checked out where very very small. The lakes are covered with 8-10" of snow that isn't going to help make ice. PLEASE BECAREFUL!!! THE LAKES ARE NOT SAFE YET......

Seats have gotten much worse over time. I have a couple of huts from 10 years ago and they are a bit better but I wouldn't discribe them as comfortable. Clam huts have went waaaaay down hill in the quality department. The new ones are pretty much junk.

The reason its discounted so much is because of the HERO2 being released.I would suspect that the HERO will retail from between $190-220 after xmas. I have both cameras and they are awesome. Although they push the HERO2 as being twice the camera I'm not convinced. The film I have taken is hard to tell the difference between the 2. It has a few more features and takes nicer still shots but film quality is very close. Here is a video shot under the ice, don't mind the audio I forgot to silence it so its kind of annoying. You can actually see the braided line..

Do you know something no one else does?

I've made more then my fair share of phone calls on both the tribs and in the winter on Simcoe. Making the present C&R zone a out right no fish zone isn't going to accomplish anything. The fish aren't spawning in those areas and they aren't spending much of there early life there either. How many parr have you caught in the Notty? The headwaters and the tribs that flow into notty are the main spawning areas and most are fairly well protected as it is.

Yeah it's easy to change the subject and point fingers at other fisheries. Fact of the matter is that it's the same "type" of angler that abuse a fishery. Angus,Innisfil,Jackson Point,Gbay shore lines, the list goes on. Every night for weeks I saw the same guy cleaning fish at the fish cleaning station on hwy 90. Its pretty hard to argue that there's a serious problem there. As far as a tag system lets be realist. If we don't have the cash to enforce the current laws then how are we going to monitor a tagging system? It would more benefical to make some other tribs C&R as well and maybe extend the C&R zone on the notty

100% agree, the amount of guys fishing this fall everyday is crazy. I also can't believe how many guys are there day after day taking home fish. Hope some changes are made soon the CO's are all for it and see the damage thats being done.

at least a good portion is C&R not like a few other slaughter houses around...

Some solid chrome! congrats!

Great fishing Martin, looks like you and Jimmy put a hurting on them. Some great fish on the kwikies and hardware! The whities off the mouth is a tough gig. Its totally hit or miss. I can remember being out with my old man when the ice was still floating around. You had to chum them to keep them around. We would also use skien from time to time with good success. wont be long now and we'll be chasing greasers Ryan

Many salmon are caught and released everyday on Lake O. Most of the guys fishing the derby are well aware that only fish over 33lbs are going to have any potential of staying on the board and anything else goes back in the lake. The number of fish between 27-31lbs this year is unreal. Cheers should be given to the MEA ( Metro East Anglers ) who took over operation of the ringwood hatchery 4 years ago. These volunteer's who do it purely for the love of fishing spend countless hours on the river collecting eggs and milk from the best genetics lake O has to offer. In the hatchery, incubating and raising the fish, cleaning and maintaining the hatchery, raising funds to buy food and equipment to keep the program running. These are the same people who started pen projects on the North shore to hold and feed the salmon and imprint them to return. Unlike the MNR who dumped them off the peirs in the middle of the day only to be eaten up by feeding birds. The extra food that the the salmon receive in the pens makes them into little eating machines! They are much larger and have a way better chance of surviving in the lake. The proof is in the pudding. The amount of clipped shakers from 6" to 21" in the lake is crazy. When the US couldnt make there stocking quota this year the MEA and volunteers drove our surplus chinooks to the Niagara river and stocked them to help out. It truly is a collective program and the US deserves a lot of credit for helping keep lake O a world class fishery, but I without a doubt believe we can thank the ringwood volunteers for the amazing fishing the next 4 years will hold! tightlines Ryan

Thanks everyone! Its going to be a great year for kings! Isn't that the truth! He picked up a sweet 36' Tiara Open. Its like a cottage, 13' beam Thanks! We kept all of our fish, after the weigh in's we spent time filleting bunches of fish. All of ours where bagged up and divided and will be smoked. We also cleaned bunches of other teams fish that was scooped up by needy families that come to these types of events just to take home fish to feed themselves. I am happy to see the fish go to someone who will eat it and the MNR are usually at the weigh in's and have no problems with them taking some fish. Ryan

Hi Everyone Its been a long time since I've put together a post. This spring was very busy.I spent lots of time on the south shore chasing kings and the fishing was great many big fish for the spring. I also managed to place third in the spring King of the Lake, the top placing Canadian team. Shortly after I purchased a new boat! A 28' Carolina Classic. Its a dream fishing boat for me and will allow me to take out larger groups in more comfort. Now for the North Shore Action. This weekend was the King of the Lake Summer edition out of Whitby. I dock at Port Whitby for the summer so fishing out of your home port for a msjor event is nice for a change. We fished for 5 days in a row. 2 pre fishing and 3 tourny days. The fishing was off the handle! Each day was a steady pick of mostly kings with an few coho's and steelhead mixed in. The fish where hugh! Many fish in the 25-28lbs class caught on prefish days and our big fish on friday went 30.2 George with a tyee- Note he is 6'5" 290 and the fish still looks big!!! Day one of the tourny was an early start, blast off was 5:15 and we came off plane and started setting lines at about 5:40. I started off working a skinny water program in about 65fow and by 615 we had our box of 5 fish! Insane we didnt get more then 4 rods in the water for over an hour. steady doubles of big drag screaming kings. We spent the rest of the day upgrading our box. Had a hugh heartbreaker when a easy 32-34lbs king came off right at the net!! would have been a much needed kicker fish. We came in with a 24.6lbs avg for 5 fish good enough for 10th place after day 1. Just a note the first place box was 138lbs for 5 fish!!!! INSANE Day 2 the fishing was a little slower but we still managed to get our box within the first hour of fishing. Had many fish hooked up but keeping them on today proved much harder. At one point we tripled up with 3 big kings, 2 of them went screaming out the back of the boat well the other decided to run past the boat and back under. total chaos! we netted one and then watched as the other 2 tangled up with each other and came unbuttoned! That's fishing. We fished away but try as we might we couldn't upgrade a 16lbs king in our box of 5. We came in with a 22.4lbs avg. It was good enough to move us up to a tie for 7th. Just an incredible event, we caught almost 200 fish in the 5 days we fished and reports from most other teams where the same! We worked a flasher and fly program for the most part with a couple good kings off spoons in prefishing. Fishing the 85-110 ft range. Tightlines and good fishing Ryan Hare www.wepoundemfishing.com
