By no way did I start this thred to make people think the ice was safe. I took the auger pic to show just how unsafe the ice is. ICE ON DEEP WATER ON LAKE SIMCOE IS NOT SAFE, END OF STORY. Simcoe is a big lake and has lots of areas that have current flowing under the ice. Many areas the ice is far too thin to walk on. This happend to be a place I was confident on. Its also not my first time ice fishing, and I know whats safe for me to walk on and whats not. everyone please be safe out there, the ice is not the same today as it was yesterday.

Well my buddy Dan and I headed out for a hour today on a little bay in kemp. The ice was 2-4" thick and inconsistant. We headed out packed light with the spikes out just incase. No one fishing but us in this area although I know more ppl where out. Dan managed to get a nice whitefish about 3.5lbs. We fished in 65fow, We marked a few more but no takers. all and all not a bad hour of fishing. Chip chip step. went through in about 6 pokes Auger under some thin ice. Dan fighting his fish nice start to a good season. The warm weather tomorrow could be hard on the ice, it will be more unstable as the day goes by so becareful everyone. Ryan

My buddy Dan and I headed a couple hours north to try our luck at some splake and Brookies. The day was great, not too cold and no wind perfect to leave the hut behind and get a little adventurous. The best part about these backwood lakes is that you rarely ever see anyone else fishing them or even signs that anyone has. the lake Although there is lots of ice on the lakes the edges are very soft, whats his name and creek areas had water visable, this creek mouth looked good we picked up a new pack auger from finn bore, man this thing is a beast. we like to run and gun with jigs and this sucker had no problem pounding hole after hole with no effort best $100 I spent and the silent approch works well in the shallow water After a good walk boaring some holes we were fishing. It wasnt long untill Dan gets slammed. a couple runs and pop the knot breaks. Had to rub this one in the guy never breaks knots and knows more of them then I'll ever know. Guess he didnt check this one Not long after I was working my jig in about 12fow and slam hes off right away, I watch the finder and he comes back and smashes it again. great fighters on 4lb and UL rods! About 15 min or so goes by when my rod gets hammered, almost pulled it down the hole! thank god for the loose drag. a really nice coloured splake they all went about 16-19" between 1-2lbs We decided to go try a few different points we had noticed on the way in. We drilled around and found a nice little hump that went from 5fow to 11fow. Dan put on his go to jig and went for the shallow hole. Before I could even get my rod down, bam hes got one. I moved around and had a couple follow the jig around but no takers, about 10 min later Dan gets crushed again. Another nice splake, man they fight hard! Even though they dont spawn, back they go to catch again another day! Now feeling adventurous and high on fishing we decided to thrash through the bushes to a small speckie lake about 1.5 miles past the end of the splake lake. The snow was DEEP right up to the goodies but we perservered. The float suits are not ideal for hiking through bushes but being we didnt know how froze the lake was what can ya do some beaver holes Dan how about you go first... we finaly made it through the bushes, trying not to get sweaty made it a slow trip. The last thing we wanted was to get cold that far from the road. lake shot... We got all the goodies set up, but didnt have too much time to fish. tried a few spots but being it was a new lake we fished blind. About a half hour into fishing I get a couple small bumps, set missed him! Bang hes back. my reel tangled so I had to hand line him what a nice fish! beautiful female, she was fat spitting out all sorts of little stuff she's been eating.makes the hike all worth while all and all a real good time, but I'll sleep like a puppy and next time no float suits and snowshoes for godsake. This sounds like fishing politics, it goes with the territory of being sponsored. well I don't disagree that your family shouldn't be discriminated against for something they had nothing to do with. Ive had more stuff given to me to try out then any other bait shop out there and they have always went above and beyond to help me out just like any other shop not everyone can have good stuff to say thats the business world

In Lake Joe I caught a old fish net through the ice, we had to drill a bunch of holes beside each other to get it through. A buddy of mine caught a brown well fishing perch, nice surprise.

AWSOME JOB !!! I love the browns, you've posted some beautiful fish this fall!!! hate to see the rivers freeze cool river shot too, looks like a great scenery and fishing. Ryan

Went out this weekend to do some early season ice fishing. The conditions where tough. Low pressure made it really hard to find fish. We spent a couple hours Saturday in the Orillia area trying our luck at some eyes. The ice conditions seemed pretty good. Anywhere from 3-6" of blackice. I was really surprised that there wasnt more snow on the ice. we moved around a bit and had some nice fish come in and bump the bait around a bit but no takers. heres a pick of the ice depth On sunday we decided to head north to a backwoods splake lake. After seeing the ice depth in orillia we thought it would be great up north. I hadent fished the lake for almost 3 winters, but we had decent sucess before ( 10 in a day) . We worked the lake up and down trying to track down some fish but NOTHING... Had a coulpe small fish follow the spoon around but that was it. The lake up north ( bracebridge area) ARE NOT SAFE!!!!!! there is lots of snow on top causing inconsistant freezing. IF YOU DONT KNOW THE LAKE WAIT A COUPLE WEEKS. ( 4" of snow--- 1.5" ice---2" water---1"-6"ice) The bait shops have no minnows right now for a couple weeks so if you do head out bring the metal. Lake looked sweet Dan drilling some run and gun holes Ice shot

I would disagree, this years fall steelhead have been excellent. The rivers have been full since the salmon died down ( really early in my area) I would also agree with steve the most of the fish spawn in the spring and with all the snow were getting should be lots of run off. This spring was one of the best years ever can hardly wait for 08'

I didnt see any signs but thanks for the info, I'll stay away.

Well my buddy Dan and I headed down to the Niagara region this weekend, being neither one of us has fished very much down there we didnt know what to expect. Saturday morning we headed down to Queenston to do some drifting. It was cold, but there were still lots of boats and shore guys out.For about the first hour after light the fish turned on. every second boat had a fish on and the shore guys seemed to be doing just as good or better. Took me a bit to get the feeling for the drifting. Missed LOTS of fish but Managed to get 3 steelies and a nice laker( the laker was wrapped so we had to net it, snapped a quick pic and back she went) we hooked a few other lakers but let them go at the boat. one was around 20lbs !!! first steelie #2 #3 Dan with the wrapped laker big laker So after getting back to the hotel we defrosted, ate and then headed to the port for a few drifts just as it was getting dark Dan picked up a nice hen brown. The only fish we kept all weekend. blood doesnt do much for the pic. Next morning we got up before light and headed back down to the port. Talk about shoulder to shoulder! we found a place away from the crowd and the fish unfortunatly. Dan managed to hook a little steelie, it was a weird fish. Look at its fins, like a mirmaid ? close up we moved around a bit to get away from the crowd. found some guys snagging near the dam, real classy. Dan managed one more fish and then back home. all and all not too bad of a time. Ryan

Headed out this weekend with my fishin' buddy Dan to hit up some local rivers. We started off by drifting some singles nothing too exciting happening just a few 1lb egg suckers and Dan gets crushed out of the blue. Fish takes off like a bullet and sticks to the bottom of the hole. After a few mins a large Laker surprise us. Just after getting a peak the hook comes out, out well quick release!. Getting sick of the we guys we moved on to a new river. nothing, tons of ppl no fish. It was getting late in the afternoon, we moved to another river hoping that the usual crowd had moved out in mid afternoon. After about 15 min of pitchin spoons I got crushed a nice 5 min battle insued. I guessing around 7-8lbs quick pic and back he goes. not a bad day but we worked for em. lol
