  1. Read a couple of reports of three inches of good ice around Petrie Island a nice ice fishing spot up east of Ottawa on the river. Some guys were even out fishing on it.... I think I will give it another week or so before I venture out.
  2. Read this on Fish-Hawk.net so I thought I better share the story here. Kayaker found dead near Grimsby A kayaker who went missing on Lake Ontario yesterday amid snow squalls and high winds was found dead this morning along the Niagara shoreline. The Brantford man, 45, was still in his kayak when his body was discovered around 9 a.m. near Grimsby, said Hamilton police Acting Staff Sgt. Chris Wills. Concerned individuals in Fifty Point Park first called police around 3 p.m. Tuesday when the man left shore despite treacherous weather. He was wearing a wetsuit. A search team, including members of the Canadian Coast Guard and the Hamilton and Niagara police marine units, set off in winds gusting up to 90 km/h and waves three to five metres high, but had no success last night. “We had to pull our boat back because it was starting to ice up,” Wills said, adding a helicopter from Canadian Forces Base Trenton searched until the early hours of the morning. Police haven’t yet released the man’s name. Guy's first name was Serge. Check out Fish-hawk.net for the story and a pic of the guy. One of those Kayak anglers. Sad
  3. Gregg Klatt - Simcoe Guide He uses Argos and is a friendly enough dude for sure. Drop him a line and he will give you the ins and outs of Argos. He goes to some pretty deep spots with his.
  4. I can well imagine that TJ is using this for a 747 flight simulator..... Huston we have liftoff.
  5. Taking two weeks to wherever I get the best last minute deal in January. The second and third week of January you can get deals that are just crazy. I never bring fishing stuff with me though... but my mask, snorkel and flippers are always packed.
  6. Eagle is a great gps/fishfinder. There is an old saying that goes something like this. "Lowrance and Eagle are owned by the same company.... Eagle finders are the best lowrance has made and proven flawless.... the Lowrance models are new technology that have a lot of lets say kinks to work out." I own an older Eagle Status GPS/Fishfinder and love it. Never... ever have I had to do anything to it except plug it in. I would say go with the lower priced Eagle unit.... you will do fine with it. When and if you upgrade your boat then plan to buy a bigger GPS/Finder then... and watch how many little issues surface with the Lowrance finders as you enjoy your Eagle unit. Don't get me wrong here.... the color units are far better for finding fish and the larger sceens are real nice.... but for the price they want to be.... and for the price I expect them not to have the issues they do with units constantly losing the GPS puck ... etc. If anyone reps from Lowrance are reading this... you might want to recommend that they start pushing proven technology rather than trying to flaunt stuff that isn't quite ready for prime time.... kind of like Microsoft pushing Windows that isn't ready .... and relying on downloading fixes for problems. Not good for client relations. My 2 cents.
  7. One last thing I might add to your Winterizing your boat. Add several Clingfree sheets to the interior of your boat. Cornball as all get-out I know but it is a tried and true way of keeping critters from deciding to move in and nest in your boat. I do this every year.... and no they don't make my ride smell spring time fresh either. Oh yeah ClingFree are the ones you want... not bounce.
  8. Think Tamagami Combine Fishing for Lake Trout and whitefish with some of the nicest and Romantic settings available at that time of the year. There are a few great spots up that that can offer you some great get-away packages. Enjoy
  9. I thought I heard somewhere that Lund was supposed to bring out a fiberglass bass boat this year too.... hmmm. Not in the catalogue though. I think they are replacing the Mr. Pike with this boat... Sport Angler Outfitter Edition looks similar... can you believe they show eight guys in the thing????? Be fun casting with that many guys in a boat that is only eighteen feet long.
  10. They sell a nice rod tip repair kit at Bass Pro Shops. I had to buy and use one last year. The only bad thing about the kit for me was the crappy melting stick glue you have to use. It held my new tip in place for most of the year but just recently let go... I will redo it using crazy glue I think something that will hold it forever. Nice choice of three different tips in various sizes so you should find something to match your blank. Fuji Rod Tip Repair Kit
  11. My Green flaked Nitro I call her.... Swamp Thang She spends a lot of time in the lily pads....
  12. I spotted this on another discussion board so I thought I would post it here for everyone. Green Bay - Wisconsin Late yesterday afternoon, Popular guide and Walleye tournament angler Rick Meverdan, passed away unexpectedly while releasing his largest Musky to date, a 50”er. Luckily, Jeremy Vanert and Shane Mason were nearby, and were able to get to Rick quickly. Shane wanted to thank Jeremy for his CPR efforts, and Dannyboy(Ricks partner for the day) for driving the boat to meet the ambulance. Rick was a helpful friend to anyone that knew him, and will be sorely missed by all of us. I just regret not accepting the short notice invite to fish the best of the best tourney with him last weekend, though am sure his partner(Jan Regal) is equally happy that he got to spend those hours with him. Foremost, condolences go out to Ricks family at this time. You are in all of our prayers. Hey on a positive note.... if you are going to give me a time and a place to die.... this would be in my top five.
  13. Here is my ride... got her wet yesterday. Nothing to show but a good tan for my troubles though. I figured with that Full Moon rising I might bag a muskie but....nada.
  14. Wow scary stuff. Look on the bright side though.... if the insurance says buy another boat... you are in the area for some good deals... Glad no one was hurt. Sorry for the boat.
  15. Hi Johnny As a guy who has been in the tournament scene for a few years now I would recommend the following for anyone thinking of giving it a try. First off. Don't shoot the moon. What that means is pick a tournament series that targets lakes you know. Don't enter the big league just yet... try the under 115hp league. The money is a bit less for the entry and the prizes but you will be up against far fewer pros. I wouldn't recommend upgrading the boat just yet either. Many guys do well in the under 115hp league with everyday boats. Don't be in a big hurry to spend a ton of money on something that you may or may not really want to do. Personally I took a swing at tournaments. It was a steep learning curve and I didn't fair that well. I had fun and learned a lot but it cost me also. I should have been trying to fish tournaments much younger than I did. I started in my late forties and it was tough on me fishing a full eight hours and then adding on another three or four hours of trailering the boat to and from tournaments and getting the thing ready for a meet. I guess what I am trying to relay to you is to take small steps towards this goal of yours. Go fish a ProAm event. They will team you up with a pro and you will see what it is like. Enjoy Probably the toughest thing about Tournament fishing is finding and building a relationship with a partner. I didn't have a full-time partner going in and got paired with a couple of people that were hard to connect with and thus we didn't do that well. Having a partner is ultimate. I have seen many good teams do well because they got along great and supported and complimented each other on and off the water. I am faced with the decision next year of wether I will continue on fishing tournaments or go back to just knocking around on weekends in the boat. As long as I am fishing... who cares. Good luck if you decide to give it a try.
  16. That's kinda like the vision I had one nite in the Seventies at a Supertramp concert. Wow finally have something in common with the Walleye.
  17. Well I finally offloaded a bunch of pictures of some river bass that I managed to entice into hitting over the past month or so... non during tournament action though unfortunately but hey that's life. The largemouth should be fattening up out there now though so if you can get out there and wail on them..... Chris Bass Chris Bass Chris Big Bass Johnny Bass Yet another shirtless JohnnyBass...
  18. Nice Haul for sure... gotta love those smallies
  19. Wow Busy summer Might I wish you this very sincere congrats on everything. You really know how to live man.
  20. Well I finally got my brother out on the boat on the weekend. We decided to hit a close northern lake in hopes of finding some nice fish. We hit the jackpot fishing this beautiful spot that isn't that far from the city. It is a lake on the Fish-Hawk Lakes project site ... can anyone figure out where we were? This is only my third time I have used advice from the site but with the results we had I think I will check out a few others and maybe contribute some info on how we do. We decided to try some rock ledge area first and were rewarded with some small hammerhandle pike and a couple of tiny smallmouth. The scenery was grand though so we just kept fishing the lakeside. Towards lunch time I decided that we were going to head off to the other shallow end of the lake and try for some Largemouth. Man what a great move. I was into one not two minutes after we arrived and the action was not constant but once we figured out what they really wanted we started boating some nice fish. 21. Way to go Jamie I saw Matt east of Petrie but didn't see you. We were in a Bass tournament.... bass were a tough bite though.
  22. What a great Family Fishing Report. This has to rank up there near the top for the best report of the year so far... it was just like being there. Splendid job.
  23. Foster's has a ton of dock space too. They were pretty well closed last winter though when i showed up looking for an Ice Hut Rental. But I thought I better chime in with another possibility for you. Foster's
  24. Does anyone really understand this whole onboard Battery Charger issue. I thought I did. Recently I have just somehow managed to mess up my second battery charger in 5 years. I had a ProMariner12 for three years. Worked great. No hassles. Then one day the charging LED light refused to come on anymore. Long story short I was never really confident that my batteries were getting fully charged anymore so... out it came and I installed another unit this year to replace this old one. I did keep the old one though... why I don't know I hang on to old stuff. Long story short... this past weekend after a run to Belleville and back where I had the unit plugged in at my Son's place and I verified by checking the lights .... out we went fishing...no problem. I trailer the boat home. Go to plug it in.... no lights...nothing not a Power light and no Charging light either. I checked all the connections and fuses. Everything looks good. Checked the power cord and it ran a fan fine. So my question to you folks is.... what the heck am I doing to these charges or are they just a prone to problems? I run two Deka Marine batteries in a 24v series to a Motorguide 67 Brute Electric motor. This is all that is connected to my chargers. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. I have contacted the maker of the chargers and will post any reply I get from them.
  25. That is too funny. It isn't mine... but I have left a few out there over the years.
