  1. I'm ok with an association limiting body checking and I've been consistent with that feeling for long before this thread started.
  2. Roughly 500 thousand kids play minor hockey in Canada. One percent of that is 5000. There are approximately 700 nhl players, not all of which are Canadian. What is the purpose of minor hockey?
  3. If skill development is a luxury because systems are what they work on in practice where do you think body checking falls? In utopia many of these ideas might have significance but not here in the real world.
  4. I was 5 foot 8 and 180lbs.... I'm still 5'8" but I haven't found a scale that says I'm 180lbs for a while.
  5. Rogers just had a coach on national television say: "You don't have the luxury of working on skills during a hockey practice." Just let that sink in. Skill development is a luxury.... in practice. I don't want to rip on the coach (or coaches). They're volunteers and so many do so much good but they and the parents are too wrapped up in winning instead of developing ability.
  6. They did that already and it didn't "work". I think there are too many more moving parts to learning hockey compared to most other team sports. Football and lacrosse are 2 collision sports but the skill of skating, and the large increase in speed, are games changers.
  7. AA and AAA will still have body checking.
  8. Why does checking need to be part of the game for kids? We are, I fear, too far down the path of trying to turn kids into hockey pros. Ten year olds as a checking line specialist. Teams, coaches and leagues focused too much on winning instead of skill development. Canada succeeds at hockey in spite of ourselves. I've played hockey almost 40 years. Checking (which I loved and was really good at) was only part of it for about 7 years (13 years old to 20). Adult rec leagues don't have checking.
  9. Spent a lot of time on the ice this winter, but the fishing sucked. A week of above zero temps makes me think today was the last day on this ice.
  10. Last night at the Colt's game I sat next to 2 guys who were in their 30's. Every second sentence was punctuated with a fist-bump. My 6 year old son knew they idiots. Get off my lawn!
  11. People call my wife miss at their own peril. I'm more concerned with someone's actions then their words. Now, get off my lawn!
  12. Second train derailment in Gogama this winter. Hope it doesn't mess up too many fishing/hunting trips. http://barrie.ctvnews.ca/cn-train-with-crude-oil-derails-in-northern-ontario-no-injuries-fire-at-site-1.2268760

  14. I remember that spring. My daughter was born on the 19th and I was driving to the hospital in shorts with the windows down. It was almost 30 degrees the whole week.
  15. Glad it work out. For what it's worth, if you click on "edit" in your original post you then click the "use full editor" at the bottom if you want to edit the title of your original.
  16. One week of wet weather and the whole thing goes. Barrie area had good cold winter with minimal melts but we also didn't get the usual snowfall either. In other words: Too many factors to say with much confidence at this point.
  17. I haven't had any issues with their shipping although I am fortunate enough to be able to get the free ship to store option now that it's here in town.
  18. It still won't be the same without the smell of horses and retrievers.
  19. You mean back when there was only one phone in the house and it was mounted to the wall in the kitchen? I guess every generation grows up in the "different world" then their parents but I think it is accelerating exponentially right now.
  20. Whoa boy, this is easy.... sitting in my living room with kids too young to have such strong ideas about their place in the world... yet. As you've acknowledged she is many of the things you want in a daughter and the fact that she's willing to stand up to you also speaks volumes. Have you listened to the speech? Does she make valid points? Is she only making the emotional argument? I seem to remember that for our speeches we needed to at least mention the "other side" to our argument. Maybe you could have her discuss the fact that she and her family have been part of the food-web and will continue to be and maybe even the friction it has caused. Some times when we the harder we push the harder they push back. Good luck, and take notes because I'm sure I'm on the same track but just a few years behind you.
  21. Valid considerations, although fish lovers isn't the best descriptor. As well, some "bird lovers" feed migrating birds during the winter and interfering with their natural migrations, while others might keep a song bird in a cage, Anyway, back to the well morality of aquariums Part of the counter would be that due to where many of us live we'll never see these types of animals, it allows us to better appreciate them and maybe consider them when dealing with the environment. Some of these aquariums (not sure about this one) also study and research these animals to better understand them and how we might help them in their natural habitats that we are encroaching on more, and more each day. That doesn't give aquariums free reign either and we should ask questions and hold them accountable for their displays.
  22. Even odds that Raf is making the exact same face. My son loved it and we'll go again and again. Take TTC or GO to save on parking and the kids get a train ride as well. And yes, buy your tickets in advance.
