  1. Dan, how much $$ do you think you will have in the rig by the time you finish? You have to include a decent labour rate, not the $130.00 you guys charge as shop rate. OK maybe not a buck 30. She sure is looking good and by the time you finish will have the only one in the entire World. That in itself is cool.
  2. One could try to rob a bank with the business end of a Swordfish, no? One need not do back flips on a bike to consider riding to be hazardous at some point. I've come close too many times riding to decide not to tempt fate any longer and stuck the bike in the back corner of the garage. No back flips required. I'm laffing out load here.
  3. https://www.amazon.ca/Electric-Rechargeable-Battery-Arthritis-Motorcycling/dp/B07TP36SSL/ref=pd_sbs_263_6/144-7097427-0878665?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B07TP36SSL&pd_rd_r=c6662ceb-2d35-4542-81e1-9902fb9ecc57&pd_rd_w=INsKe&pd_rd_wg=1wkRl&pf_rd_p=dbebb38c-0e3d-4a67-ac15-432d7c7a2789&pf_rd_r=1FSGEJ2DRVKQD6PQCX8K&refRID=1FSGEJ2DRVKQD6PQCX8K After 2 hours of looking at heated gloves and glove liners online we have decided to buy the pair above. Meets all my needs I am sure. 160 bucks plus tax CDN. I will be submitting the bill to my insurance provider as well as OAS (Old Age Security). My Doc said he would write a scrip for them. I don't know if I will get reimbursed for anything but if you don't ask you will never get an answer. Thanks again guys. Johnny D
  4. I don't think Mike needs much luck Chris. You need more than luck to bag them fish.
  5. What Terry wrote BoneAmie. No CO is going to hammer you when you are loaded with Crappie bait and tackle. If you are indeed fishing crappie it most likely be almost on shore in fallen bush or trees. Close to docks with a float and micro lures. I wouldn't worry about hooking into a Smallie there, they shouldn't be anywhere near there. Even Largemouth I would think unless they are pre or post spawn. Don't bring a half dozen flippin' sticks and baitcasters all pre rigged or a med action spinning outfits pre rigged and trays of traditional Bass hardware and you will be just fine. I can only go on what you wrote and what I read. Welcome aboard OFC, the best fishing and everything else that is useful and non political or religious site anywhere. Give us the W-5 about yourself if you wish, optional of course. But if you are intending to partake here please read the site rules. Johnny D
  6. I was never a mogul guy. There was mogul hill at Chedoke Golf course in Hamilton. To me it looked like skiing down the side of a wall. The 1st time I ran it I tore a knee cartilage that took me out all winter. The next year somehow the handle of my pole hit me square in the jaw and I broke it, my jaw not the pole. That took me out of my Sr. year of Basketball and skiing that winter. I know when to pack something in. If I had gone to shorter skis I'm sure it would have turned out better. I think I was running on 195 CM K2's. Pretty long. What did I know at 17, not much and a zero budget to buy shorter skis.
  7. That sounds like subliminal cheating to me Mr. 1 post. I don't think anyone here will be helping you "not appear to be bass fishing". I will suggest though that you do not fish where Bass are known to spawn i.e. spawning beds or structure where Bass tend to spawn before the 3rd Saturday in June, not the 3rd week. If the regs. say 3rd week you could start fishing on the Sunday of the 3rd week. Sorry I won't be of anymore help to you. edit: I can't help myself. Those cottagers that you think they don't want you to fish where you are and appear to be using the "off season" argument are doing exactly that. They most likely know the structure where they live and you are fishing where Bass are spawning. That's deemed to be targeting spawning fish before the season opener to me. If one has zero idea where Bass spawn that is not an argument to get out of a fine. Especially when you have been warned by some mean cottager.
  8. Thank you Art et all. This is exactly what I need. It looks like there are more than a few available from 100 CDN and up. More than worth the $$ if they work. Heck I got a 100 dollar gift card from Moore's, got a Tooke and a pair of socks. I don't usually order anything on the interweb thing but Amazon is something I can trust I think. I have read all the comments from buyers and they all seem satisfied. I will let you all know what I buy and how well they work. I just went outside to lift the wipers off the truck and car. They were frozen to the glass so I went back in and got a jug of water. Only took my right glove off long enough to pour the water on them. My fingers on my right hand were burning after less than 60 seconds for Lord's sake. Doc told me to run them under lukewarm water until they stop burning. Geoff, I have a box of gloves and mitts of all construction, styles and makes, so far no good. I always wore the mitts that flip down for fishing and shovelling snow. This year if I expose my right fingers for seconds I'm done and even with the mitt part on if it's below 0C, I'm done. I'm sure these heated gloves will help. Exercise and diet too, I've never been one to work out at home. Just walking is going to help as long as my fingers don't fall off. My wife suggested I walk the track around the new arena in town, great advise, need to take it. The 1st step is the hardest. Thanks again guys. JD
  9. I liked Holiday Valley much better than Kissing Bridge Drifter. It had that big long run that ran the backside of the hills, not steep but a long enough run your legs were on fire at the end. I ended up in the creek on the left side when I thought I was Hans Klammer when we did our imitation of a Downhill race. It was nothing for us to drive to Blue Mountain on a Friday after work and if we found poor conditions like rain we would turn around and drive back south, spend the night at home then drive to Holiday Valley just in time for the Sun to rise. The 1st time we went to Banff only then did we find out what a real deal ski run was. Vermont and Quebec couldn't hold a candle to those runs out west. Holiday Valley now has a championship 18 hole golf course on it with condos on the sides of the fairways. Double as ski to and from Ski Chalet's in winter, not this winter unless it's been all man made up to today. Heck here's another crazy and unsafe thing we do like ice fishin', downhill skiing. I bet more crazy people die downhill skiing than drown ice fishing. I will add playing hockey and football to that list of possible quadriplegic activities. Hell, I think it's more hazardous tobogganing down hills surrounded by big trees than ice fishing is. It's sad to think of all the people that will never leave their rooms because it might hurt.
  10. Looking south across Lake Erie this afternoon the US side of the lake was getting hammered with snow. I'm sure they didn't mind as this area is called The Southern Tier of Western NY and that is where all the ski resorts are that I actually skied when I was a yunggin'. I have grainy color pics to prove it too! Ski pants came in Bell Bottoms then. Thanks Drifter. I'll check it out. Our Weather Channel here in Haldimand still say 20% chance of precip. +6C.
  11. It begs the question as well as to why do people drive cars on a track at 300 MPH? Climb mountains, wind surf on Lake Erie in ice cold water in November and December when the winds are 130KPH, and, and, and? If that windsurfer or mountain climber needs to be rescued a discussion as far as who pays may start. Actually back country downhill skiers and snow boarders are being charged for rescues out west now depending on circumstances. That topic comes up here once in a while. When I see a reporter from news agencies standing next to the ocean in a 100 MPH plus Hurricane to show people sitting on the couch what a Hurricane looks like then I really shake my head. That is just ignorant. A person with a semblance of intelligence that does stupid things is ignorant. Ice fishing is neither stupid nor ignorant. If one decides to take a risk and fish on 1" ice well then I have to question their intelligence and or decision making. Last time we went to Quinte I found we were going to fish on 1 or 2 inches ice. I spent the day in the mall and in the motel room watching fishing shows. My 2 fishing partners did stay on the ice, their choice. That night and next morning it was brutally cold and had a good 4", I fished then. Yep got the Skunk eye and had 2 Mickey D's Fillet O Fish sangwidges on the way home.
  12. A slight NW wind today. Wind Turbines were not making and juice today. Small pleasure boats could have gone out today fishing. I have no idea where to even think about looking for them now that The Nanticoke electrical generators are gone. Fishermen would break through the ice built up on the ramp at Hoover Marina to launch. Bob Izumi taped an episode of his fishing show years ago doing the exact same thing. Mid 90's maybe. They caught a carp in the warm water discharge that had 2 tails.
  13. Yep, they probably had never registered a boat there Akrisoner. Boats titles and registration is a Federal thing and your trailer is provincial, the MOT. You paid taxes on the trailer. I am going to sign my boat over to a friend and I'm told I can't just go to Service Canada and do it everything has to be done online now. I'll find out soon I guess. That location must have been a 2 for 1 special, Service Canada and MOT all in the same kiosk. Too simple to be true.
  14. We wore leather mitts and hand warmer pacs when ice fishing and working outdoors occasionally at the plant. Mitts are OK unless you need to use your hands like using a radio outdoors, driving or those time dexterity is required outdoors like using a phone to chopping wood. I need gloves that keep my fingers from freezing. Maybe heated gloves have yet to be developed. There is an opportunity for someone to fill a niche with a new product. Time to Google. Not totally off topic. I knew this nut bar Pipefitter that could only work as far away as the electrical extension cord to the heating pad he wore around his torso. Both indoors and outdoors. I tried it on and It worked. Maybe he wasn't so nuts after all.
  15. Are you saying everything you read on the interweb isn't the truth? Oh my say that isn't true. This will be the end of the World as we know it. There is an entire generation born in the 90's who's lives will be forever cynical from the point they learn this on.
  16. Of course it is too early for some species. I was catching these trout in southern FLA and the Keys this time of the season. That's a long way from S.C. Enjoy pal. Be safe.
  17. I don't think anyone is going to pay for a flight up there. I'd probably lose 10 fingers by the time I get into the airport from the DC-3 if there is an airport or it's just an airfield like Sue Aitkens. Poor attempt at comedy not withstanding I would really appreciate a contact if you really recommend them after you get yours. No better a test than where you are where -40 is -40. Thanks Geoff. I'll Google them. I'm sitting here next to the fire and the furnace is set at 70F and my fingers are cold as I type.
  18. Arctic Angler. I need to get a new weather network. Obviously the one I use is not as good as the predictions I have no idea how many miles NW of us here. Thank you. The next time I need to know if I should wear a coat or a jacket or just stay in and finish reading "The Irishman". I'll PM you big guy. Thanks, Johnny D. PS I hope the movie is better than the book, not impressed. Not many admit to crimes in an auto biography, especially murder where there isn't a statute of limitations. Now that the protagonist is dead I'm sure Scorsese took artistic license and I'm sure has "The Irishman" Frank Sheeran played by Robert DeNero pulling a trigger.
  19. Akrisoner, I don't often open ice fishing posts but came across this and read your OP. Man, glad to have you back, safe and sound. It read like a Tom Clancy novel. Complete with the Hero living to tell about it thank God. Close one eh kid? Just the other night I was watching one of those reality Cop shows and a dog went through the ice when on a walk with his buddy and was nearly dead from scratching on the ice around a 4' hole. You could see the blood from the Pups paws clawing on the edge of the ice., he had been in there for only about 10 minutes when the water rescue crew got to him. Only 5' of water yet both rescuers donned their dry dive suits before they went in. Anyone could have jumped in a pond only 5' deep. If someone did that within a minute someone else would need to now rescue both a Dog and a Man. Just the look on that pups face wanted me to well up, OK I did. A job without a plan is a plan for disaster. I hope all the folks here that venture out onto our ice in our beautiful lakes and rivers take something away from your experience. There is no such thing as too much preparation. If only one of the guys here do something better to help prepare themselves for a bad day because of your post and it saves someone else's or their own life you have done what you were put here on Earth for. Simple as that. I don't know if you do the social media thing out there but if you do or someone else here does please pass on this post, please. I have a saying. " Experience is a lifetime of mistakes. Wisdom is knowing how not to make them again." You now have some wisdom Akrisoner and now you can pass it on. Johnny D edit: The Golden Retriever was warmed up in the Cop car given 02 and spent the night in the vets, he was out walking with his buddy the next afternoon.
  20. I have and have had circulation problems Type 2 Diabetes related in my hands. Nothing as bad as this year, and it isn't even cold. It's bad, I can't even walk more than 100 yards in -1C and have to tap out as my right hand fingers are so cold the tips turn white with good quality work gloves on, not good. I need a recommendation for the very best heated gloves from you ice fishing and outdoorsmen Gurus. Is there such a thing? I have a good budget. I need all my fingers. My Doc gave me a RX. to submit to OHIP or OOS. (Old Age Security) Thank You ahead of time. Johnny D.
  21. That is a very interesting article indeed Smitty, thanks. Since we have lived here full time on the north shore of Erie for the past 20 (have owned it for 25) years a interest to me is looking for Wolf, Coyote or Coywolf. My 1st introduction to Coyote was when I thought I was going to chase away some pesky Racoons from the garbage pails in the dark with a hockey stick and flashlight only to find 3 skinny, mangey Coyote routing around the garbage, I ran faster back to the cottage than I thought my repaired knees could. The name Coywolf seems a matter of semantics as according to the Prof that wrote the article the Wolf around the Great Lakes were so rare 100 years ago a purebred Wolf found it difficult to find a mate that breeding with Coyote and domestic Dog was inevitable. Around 15 years ago we had a number of cold winters where the lake was frozen over and in some of the narrower sections of the lake completely frozen over from here to NY. There was what I thought were 3 Wolves, 2 dirty white and 1 brownish, sunning all day long for a few days straight on the large, some sections 20' feet high, upward heaved sections of ice that is common here on Erie along the shore when the lake freezes. They only moved when the Sun shifted in the horizon west. I called the MNR and they referred me to The Long Point Conservation Authority. A woman and a man from LPCA came out with their long lens cameras for the next few days after calling and I confirmed that the canids (new word today) were indeed back again. They both said that after reviewing the pics they both agreed if they had to testify in a court of law they would say that they were 90% certain they were Wolves and not Coyotes or Coywolves. They did use the word Coywolf. They said in their experience white wolves here were rare let alone 2. When we have had ice in the past I unfortunately have not seen them again. I don't think we have had ice here for the last 10 years. Ice every year for the 1st 15 we have owned it.
  22. The Grand River in York is up to the road, that's about 200' from the river, much higher than Monday. I had lunch today in Hammertown with a good buddy that had a snow plow biz, his son in law runs it now but he still plows. I don't know where they get their info but he said Hamilton is getting 20 centimeters of snow this weekend. My weather thing says 20% chance of snow Sunday with temps at +5. That's tricky. He is usually right, but only when it comes to snow.
  23. There are people on jobs that know more than their co workers, usually more than their supervisors. I would have asked the poor woman with all due respect can she ask someone for advice? When I think now about what I didn't know at 25 when I was handed the keys to an operation with a lost revenue of $4000.00 a minute and everything that came with that I start to have an anxiety attack. My managers must have been feeling the same at home. If I had have known the $$$ then I might have tapped out.
  24. No such thing as Global Weather Change? I like GWC better than global warming. Listening to the news tonight hottest year ever since recorded history was 2019. I am told that we are at 1C above basically normal, once we hit +1.5C, it's too late to reverse. I remember where I heard it, Bernie Sanders on the Dems debate stage last night. I take everything with a grain of salt whatever that means. All I know is it can't be good and try and do my part not to make things worse, anymore. Simple things like shutting off my V8 1/2 ton 4X4 when idling at a drive through. Sounds like an oxymoron. Drive a gas guzzler and try and be an environmentally responsible person. Out here in the boonies I bet 80% of vehicles are pick up trucks, most 4X4's, the balance are mostly SUV's. There must be real stats. for those numbers somewhere here on this innerweb thing. There is a real reason for all the 4X4's.
  25. Dem ders some nice fish. You have been busy my man. Only 2019? Heck those could be best of a lifetime for many. I love the very nice Pike with the CN Tower in the background. If you told someone there would be that quality of Northern's there 40 years ago they would have you committed for 30 days and nights of medical observation.
