Places to fish with in half an hour of Hamilton?
hotsky replied to hotsky's topic in General Discussion
I'll try Hamilton Harbour again first, I heard there supposed to be pike there as well. Toronto Islands sounds tempting but I just got a speeding ticket recently... I'm just not a big fan of driving there... one time I'll try it. -
Places to fish with in half an hour of Hamilton?

I thought about Bronte, 16 mile and Credit river. Haven't tried any of them yet. Heard they get busy, and I'm a fan of solitude when I'm fishing unless im with a buddy of course. Out of the 3 which one is the least busiest? best fishing? Any of them have pike? -
Was just looking at Google maps to see if I missed anything close to home that can be fished. I've been to obvious and popular places like the Harbour, Coots, Binbrook, Grand river, Mountsberg, even 50 point conservation pond. As well as some others a little father away (Guelph and Fanashawe lake, Thames river, Dunnville, Long point, Big creek). That's since picking up the hobby in May. I love trying new places and wondering if I'm missing anything else close close by (about half an hour away from Hamilton, that I zip down to for a few hours after work or on a weekend). Any good smaller creeks or lakes/ponds that I overlooked? As to what I'd like to fish for, bass, pike, carp, catfish, haven't fished for trout yet but basically if they're biting I'm interested Thanks

Was in London again today so spend some time fishing around the Wonerland bridge. Had a lot of hits mostly from small fish closer to shore but only caught 3 smallies, and a minnow in a small pool off a drainage tunnel. The bass were caught in the margins in slacks maybe a foot deep. got this one on a large mr.twister This one went for Rebel bee. love that little crankbait! This little guy surprised me; it went for a crandbait (shown in the pic) that got me a few pike. On the advice given here I found a few pools, tried different lures from mr twister to spinners, spoons even crank-baits. Nothing...not even a hit. I thought even if there's no pike in the area at least other larger fish would be hiding there.

I was fishing at Hamilton Harbour today, no luck but saw a cool fish chase. First one I ever saw actually, not including seeing couple of pike hit my lure. It was maybe 20 ft from the shore, at first I thought a carp got spooked but dont think that was the case, I couldn't positively ID what the fish was but it was quite large 10-15 lbs maybe more. It covered about 10 meters in couple seconds just below the surface changing direction at one point, which makes me think it was chasing something. I thouht maybe it was a pike (colour seemed right) but it was pretty fat and I would've expected it to be longer at that girth. What else could it be?

A buddy of mine caught one in big creek long point when we were camping in July, also seen someone pull one out from Hamilton harbour. never caught one myself tho.

Thanks again guys!

Thanks. Would it work at all if i just let it sit under a float like a regular worm or would that be a waste of time?
-
So the line is going the the majority of the hook.. does the hook go thru the worm after or just sitting there? small one I'm guessing? Also do you just twitch it like you would texas style rig?
-
I got some plastic Matzuo worms from Canadian tire on my lunch break today, I never used them so figured I can give them a try. They are 6 or 7" thin dew worm style not the fat senko stuff. I don't like messing around with real worms so thought I can try these. Would I just hook them and let them sit under a float? Or how are they supposed to be used? They seem too skinny and too long to Texas rig them. but how do I hook them if I'm going to use them as one would hook a real worm, since they are much harder than worm and hooking a fish could be a challenge. Wacky style?

Thanks for the offer, which Eagle GT model is it? what broke on it btw?

well the battery has never died on me so who knows how long it would've lasted if I tried to completely drain it (which you're not supposed to do). When I asked how long a battery lasts I was told a couple hours so I assumed 5 hours of constant use was good.

I have one from Costco, 115 AP. Got it maybe 2 months ago and been using it with my 30lb MinnKotta fitted on my Sevylor inflatable. I had 5 hours of use on a single charge (speeds 1-3 mostly). Pretty happy with it but it's not small and weighs 50lbs (feels even heavier).

Fenwick Warranty Service 131 Savannah Oaks Drive, Unit#1 Brantford, Ontario N3V 1E8 (519) 750-0100 I had to replace a tip guide on other rod, Kingsway sports in Guelph did it for me for $5, but it seems easier than replacing guides below the tip. I called the number and was told I'd have to pay 50% of the price plus ~$11 shipping. I got the rod on sale for $40 but their price is $60 so it'd cost me about same as what I paid for it new and that's if I bring it in. Not sure if it's worth it...

I have a Fenwick Eagle GT rod that has a broken off ring/eye. I called the store I bought it from and they said eyes aren't covered by the warranty. And they would charge $25 to replace the eye so it might be better just to buy a new one. :/ btw I found this on Fenwick website: "Rods NOT covered under warranty may also be submitted for replacement for a nominal fee. Please contact us directly for details." Looks like Canadian repair center is in Brantford which is only half an hour from me. Anyone dealt with them?

I think the net is just fine, but again I've newer caught a muskie -
I knew that some don't want to post info on here (thats why I mentioned sending a PM) but didn't know about the rules.

Thanks, nice pics Fishing Fury! So is there pike in the North branch, can anyone confirm? Ainsley, did you catch any pike by the UWO?
-
I'm asking because there are two branches one flows from the Fanshawe lake and the other thru Woodstock, Doorchester etc. The first (north branch) is more convenient for me and I know it better but I haven't came across any reports of pike being there, and I don't want to waste time casting lures for fish that doesn't exit there.
-
^ Was that in London? I don't go there often enough or have enough time to explore entire length of both branches so more specific locations would help a lot.
-
Was that from a boat or shore? I usually only get 2 unless I get skunked...
-
Doorchester? I've heard there was pike there, but when I tried it (just before the mills pond) it didn't get me anywhere.
-
Try Syclopses great stuff and work well for pike. Do you work spinnerbaits same as a spinners?

My parents live in London and I go to see them every few weeks if I can, I lived there for 5 years myself till '07 (before I started fishing) and used to go biking and walking my dog at the upper branch between highboury and adelide. I remember seeing a bunch of decent size fish right off the bank just sitting there and thought it was pretty cool. I didn't know much fish species then and don't quite remember enough now to know what what they were...I've been to the same spots in the last few months, saw a lot of carp but they managed to elude me and only caught a few smaller bass. I know there supposed to be pike in Thames river in London but where do I look for them? I also tried fishing under Wonderland bridge and again only got small bass. Any tips would be appreciated! PM me if you don't want to post on here. Thanks.

Don't know why but I never caught anything with spinnerbaits...anywhere! I have a few of them and tried enough times. I've been using them same as spoons and spinners. What am I dong wrong? I've had good luck with spoons, but last time crankbaits was the only thing that worked (but 90% of the time I was cleaning off weeds). Also had a pike hit a senko worm 5 feet from shore but it got off.
