Fisher and marten are two different critters, same family though. Fisher is bigger than marten. I was sitting a deer watch one time and had a fisher come out to me. He sat on a log about 15 feet away from me and chattered at me for about 5 minutes. Wasn't nasty but I didn't give him reason to be. I didn't make any sudden moves but my gun was ready in case he did. When I had a farm, there was a marten caused me some problems with my chickens for a while. I fixed that pretty quick.

How many of us remember when there was no such thing. Most of us just ran the gas out of the engine on the last trip in the fall and drained the lower unit. Fill the lower unit in the spring and top up the gas tank and you're good to go. Outboards lasted almost forever and nobody worried too much. What happened? Someone came up with all this unneeded high tech stuff and all of a sudden it costs a fortune to winterize an outboard. What's up with that?

Brennan Harbour is on the North Channel of Lake Huron so the variety of fish you can catch is enormous. Classed as trophy musky water, the keeper limit is 54 inches. You're right by the mouth of the Spanish River so steelhead and salmon are possible in September. Watch the weather, if you get a good west wind, you'll get some monster waves rolling right by Brennan Harbour and up the river. If that happens, stay in the bay and catch some pike.

Used to hunt them years ago when I was a kid. Club them with a stick and throw them in the boat until you get enough for a meal. Wrap the legs in foil with butter, salt and pepper and roast them in the coals of your campfire. Yum. Nothing like chicken. That one in the photo isn't really very big.

So this summer, the light of my life, my resident love goddess caught her personal best pike. It was 31 1/2 inches and 7 1/2 lbs. She thought it was a monster. Now I should enlighten her and let her know it's only a so-so fish.................. Nah, my mother didn't raise any stupid kids.

Yep, lakers and specks are both members of the char family and grayling are from the whitefish family. Take it from there. Trout or whitefish? My preference would be the trout.
-
There are members in Elliot Lake too, also some in the Soo. We're everywhere.

17 and 19 years old? If they're more than a couple hundred bucks, walk away. Walk very fast. Don't look back.

Great lures. Super action. The light of my life and I have been getting some great pike and bass action on them this summer. I have a bunch of them left over from my charter fishing days on the North Channel of Huron. Latest update on their website is less than a week ago so they're still around.

what happens to the plastic left in the water?
Bob replied to whitbyboatguy's topic in General Discussion
I could be mistaken but I thought BPA was used to make plastic stiff so wouldn't be used in soft baits. Just another one of those things that radicals get riled about. If it worries you, don't use them. -
Might have been some bruising at point of impact but most of the meat would have been fine. At one time, if you hit an animal, you could claim it and take it home but I don't know if laws have changed lately. Best thing would have been to call police and report it, they'd likely tell you to take it with you anyway. Saves calling a cleanup crew. Dress a deer same as a rabbit, just on a larger scale.

Maybe it's a pinook? These hybrids were first identified in the St Mary's River in 1992 and have characteristics of both pink and chinook but the white gums are typical. Not real common but they do show up where both pinks and chinooks spawn. What area was this fish caught in?

Yep, getting old is a bit of a pain..... but the alternative really sucks. On the other hand, while getting old is mandatory, it's nice that growing up ain't. Stay young in your attitude.

Nope! They'd have to pay me and I wouldn't do it for $175.00. I don't come that cheap. It'd take lots more than that just to get me into Toronto and it's my original hometown.

It's what my parents called me. Never could figure that one out, My birth certificate says my name is Robert.

The one they mentioned from Athabaska was 102 lbs. The mount hung in the ROM for years but that was a long time ago. I saw it way back when, last time probably more than 40 years ago. Apparently, it had no gonads so it was technically sexless.

I'm in agreement too. I pointed out to the light of my life what the forecast was for tomorrow and she just said "We'll have to get out earlier so we can get back in time to beat the worst of the heat". I love that woman!

Yep, Esten skunked us today. Didn't see anything much below 30 ft. Tried a dipsey for a while, no dice. We've only been in to Esten twice this year and skunked both times. Shocking! Esten hardly ever skunked us in the past. We had one good hit and then it was gone. I think we'll try Depot in the AM. Milady has been on a bum leg for a couple of weeks, whacked her knee pretty good but she figures it's in shape to handle that little ladder down there.
-
Yes. Thank you. I kind of figured that's all I'd need. Do you fish Elliot or is that a general observation for the district? They've made an awful mess at the boat launch so I think we'll have a go at Esten right after breakfast.

No bells Lew. The place we camped was a free campground that had a little beach and a small island about a quarter mile out from the beach. We had a lot of feeds of catfish and froglegs done in foil in the coals of the campfire. I don't remember how many campsites there were exactly but couldn't have been more than 20. More than once I had a musky steal a bass off my line while fishing a big cabbage patch between the beach and the island.
-
Lew, it sounds like your family and mine camped at Kasshabog through the same time period. Ain't that a hoot? Many fond memories for sure. We're very near the same age, I turned 15 in Oct. of 60.

Retirement living in Elliot Lake is whatever you make of it. If you like the idea of having numerous lakes that you can launch in within 20 minutes of your door (I do), it's the pussycat's butt. Most lakes in the area have some kind of trout along with pike and bass and some even have walleye if that's your inclination. Actually I didn't come here to retire, I came here to work. When they shut down the mines, I worked a lot of different jobs but never had a desire to leave. Last fifteen years or so, I "worked" as a KJ (karaoke jockey) with my own equipment and had a blast. Party 3 nights a week and get paid cash at the end of every night. Kept the wolf pretty far from the door. When it came time, I just stopped working and started collecting my "pennies from heaven". Now when the weather is good, if I'm not dressed and ready to go, that Resident Love Goddess pushes me to get up and let's fish. Retirement here is great. Oh yeah, boated 3 more pike this AM, the bass have lockjaw I guess. Gonna put some riggers on my little boat and get some trout.

Resident love goddess and I were trolling past the boat launch on Elliot Lake on, I think it was Friday, maybe Saturday. I don't keep track of days too well since retirement. The OPP boat was just coming out and they hailed us to say they were coming alongside. I shut down my engine and we hauled lines as they approached. I was tickled to tell them I no longer require a license and I showed them my senior's card and boat operator card as well as all safety gear. They thanked us and said that folks like us make their job easy and I told them that we love to make their job easy, they do a fine job. These were two very young fellows who were all smiles, friendly and courteous to a tee. Couldn't figure out why the senior officers didn't snag the cushy duty? I've been fishing this lake for 30 years and change and been stopped by MNR maybe 3 or 4 times but this is the first time I've ever been stopped by police on any lake in the district. I know they do rounds and they have two boats based in Blind River but this is the first time I've run into them on the water. No worry because I always have my stuff together and in order. Up until they stopped us we had had one fish on and lost it but after they left we landed three decent pike in the mid 30s range. Not a bad day and we were home shortly past noon.

Yeah, I understand that Lew. Not knowing the lay of your property, it just sounded good to me at the time. If you hit those things on the right lines with an electric hammer, they just might split. If you can even get a groove in them, a steel wedge and sledge would likely get them to break.

How about parking the truck in a handy spot and hook the come-along to the truck? Oh yeah, chock the wheels.
