Hack_Fisherman
Thanks. Much appreciated I’ve amassed A ton of goodies. Grounding bars, fuse blocks, battery kill switches. It’s going to look a lot like that system. Trying to impart some of my own trickery. (like being able to patch all three batteries together in case the starting battery goes dead) Where I might need a hand is wiring up my new tach. This boat had zero anything in it. (navigation lights and a cigarette lighter is all it had) Trying to bring it up to modern spec.
AKRISONER
I have no idea where to connect a tac into a motor that doesn’t already have one. Other than that if it has a feed it’s as simple as plugging it in. maybe next winter if I get bored I’ll reconfigure my connects and do that nice clean grounding bar set up in my boat. Right now I’m using two distribution blocks, same idea of having raw power but no shut off for the units specifically. Garmin does an excellent job tbh of getting the units to get everything powered up and shut off. You turn a unit on and you see the network hub and panoptix black box fire right up. I basically rewire every winter anyways because my panoptix comes out of the boat for ice fishing. For now I’m running with what I’ve got.
fishfinder89
Hey man, I bought a boat a couple of weeks ago and I'm having trouble with the 2 helix 8 fishfinders. I'm convinced it's a wiring issue and I think I know exactly what needs to be done, I just don't want to mess it up doing it myself. Could you reach out to me to discuss? Maybe I can use your services. Cheers, Dave

CPH
On 3/21/2022 at 1:43 PM, AKRISONER said: Hey guys, just throwing this out there as spring arrives, I got into car stereo wiring in highschool and as my fishing passion took off I’ve now completely overhauled 3 boat’s marine electronics wiring systems including trolling motors, Humminbird and Garmin systems, networking and forward facing sonar amongst other projects helping friends with wiring their boats etc and have spent countless hours studying the perfect way to wire electronics for maximum output and clarity. im a boat electronics junky and I’m beginning to realize that this skill set is somewhat specialized, especially these days in as the car stereo industry has all but vanished. I’ve had some members inquire about wiring their own electronics and I’ve noticed that any companies working in this space making marine wiring harnesses such as sea clear power to me are 1. Extremely overpriced and 2 American based making it not the most accessible for Canadians. In simple terms, im offering a 100% plug and play wiring system customized for your boat that will allow your electronics to work perfectly once the harness is strung through your boat to wherever you plan on having your screens. So I’m throwing this out there to anyone listening, I could use a little extra cash at the moment to pay an expensive vet bill! I’ve been toying with the idea of making these wiring systems, even considering doing a little wiring as a side gig if there was any interest. So if anyone out there is interested or has considered upgrading their electronics but are intimidated by the idea of rewiring their boat please comment here or reach out, I’d love to have a chat about your application. Shoot me a message or comment here! *Edit - I never thought of this until now either, I’ve done a bit of car detailing on the side and can definitely offer that for boats as well! I can even high speed polish and re-surface fibreglass boats. from exterior cleaning, to interior, carpet cleaning and fibre glass treatments, shoot me a message, I’d love to talk about what you’d like your boat to look like! if you saw my 98 skeeter, you’d know what I’m talking about! im located in Georgetown and carling and can travel if needed. AKRISONER just a little word of caution. Been in the marine business for over 20 years. As soon as a boat comes in take a picture of all sides and any damage, scratches, etc. Take pictures of before work is done and after work is complete. Get the owner to fill out a work order in advance in his or her hand writing being explicit as to what they want done and ensure you document the date and time you call them to come and pick up their boat, and how many times you call. While most boaters are good people there are others that do not belong on this planet and will try to take advantage of you. I've seen it all. They come in for an oil change and want a new boat back, or accuse you of damaging their boat and will settle for a free repair. Electrical problems are the most time consuming and expensive repairs if you have to chase the problems through out the boat and through the different harnesses. You fix something, they come back a year later after having used it for a full summer and tell you something is wrong again, and want a warranty repair. Get a credit card or a substantial deposit to ensure the boat owner has some skin in the game, if not, you may be the owner of a boat and it will cost you 500 plus to scrap a boat or a lot of heart aches to try and sell it for what you have in it. Its a cheap way for someone to dispose of a boat. Its not a neccessity like a car. They just leave it with you. Not a joke... I know...Anyone want to buy a boat, or seadoos I have a few of them.

Thanks for the heads up CPH, i have been very clear with people that have inquired about the type of work I am willing to do. I have turned exponentially more jobs than I have taken on to this point for this exact reason. I am not the type to troubleshoot someones yacht's electrical issues. I also dont offer to work on anything and front the bill myself. A good course of action has been to help people order what they need..ive done this free of charge on multiple occasions now. If they then need a hand installing what they have already purchased, Ive helped a few guys out with that. Sometimes the guys are even there working on the boat with me. Im certainly fully aware of the risks, Im also aware that there are bad people in the world that will take advantage of you. Hence why I dont attempt to do this for a living. I have a career, if the right job comes up...(a guy needed help installing a trolling motor and wiring/fuses/shut offs for it...I let the guy buy everything he needed and he asked if I would do the install for him. He then asked if id consider help determine why he was having issues with his electronics, to which I discovered the previous owner had used the ignition on the boat to power the electronics...I told the owner as such free of charge and informed him that I was not comfortable risking taking his ignition system apart, the risk was too great for me to be accountable for his boat no longer running
