jbailey Posted December 25, 2013 Report Posted December 25, 2013 Les Stroud's documentary about moving off the grid I found it pretty interesting and thought I'd share with anyone who hasn't already seen it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PwQxqBBut8s
Tim Mills Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 Thanks for posting. I remember seeing the original doc of him and his wife living in the woods for about a year. Was the cabin they built north of thunder bay? She got pregnant so they moved back to civilization.
16 Footer Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 Interesting but Les does not tell us how much it costs to fix up the buildings to make in comfortable for is family. He must have good friends or lots of money to helicopter in lumber, bring in crews and heavy equipment up a bush road to his back 150. Not everyone can get completely off the grid but something to think about with increasing energy costs.
Steve Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 with the vast improvements with solar energy (and do some extent, wind energy) it is becoming easier and easier to get off the grid.

Yea, it was weird when he was saying he didn't want to pay 9-10 grand to have a well drilled but he was able to fly lumber in via helicopter?! I can't imagine that being very cheap.
alexmedic Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 You can all check it out for yourself. It's now for rent. I guess when he split with the wife, the extra income was needed.. https://www.facebook.com/thereallesstroud/posts/340152146037866
16 Footer Posted December 26, 2013 Report Posted December 26, 2013 For $1800 a week I would rather rent a nice water front cottage and go fishing.
