Muskieman Posted December 29, 2011 Report Posted December 29, 2011 West Nipissing Police Service would like to advise the public that as of December 29th 2011 safe ice has yet to form on Lake Nipissing and surroundings Lakes and Rivers. On This day two snowmobilers from Sturgeon Falls area attempting to cross Lake Nipissing, broke through the ice near Iron Island and managed to swim to safety and walk back to mainland. The West Nipissing Police Service is asking the public to use proper and extreme safety precautions before venturing onto frozen surfaces. Although climate has been favorable over the past few days, we want to advise that proper ice as yet to form on Lake Nipissing and area waters. Thank you. West Nipissing Police Service. Randy

Theres always some dumb trying to kill themselves at the early season.
Roy Posted December 29, 2011 Report Posted December 29, 2011 Theres always some dumb trying to kill themselves at the early season. Yes Brian that's the terrible part of ice fishing...the start and end of seasons. Meanwhile there could have been a couple of very knowledgeable, experienced fishermen out there who knew that they were safe on that thickness....but someone decided to ride their sled over to ask them how the fishing was and BANG! PLEASE be careful, others aren't.
Muskieman Posted December 29, 2011 Author Report Posted December 29, 2011 must have been cottagers or joyriders, fishing is closed on Nip ... opens on Jan 1st.

Unfortunately that's where natures stuck some peoples brains, in their "noodle". Fortunately no rescue guys had to stick their necks out for them.
