note to self...bring my ATV to haul the gear if i ever go camping with you
-
nice! how thick and stiff is the rubber on those? the homemade setup that came with my boat is built good, but the rubber they used is very flimsy and flaps like crazy over 90km/h and i'd like to solve the issue.

yes, the sanctuary is marked by white buoys. hard to see, but they are out there.

yes, but surge brakes are no good for backing up hills, require messy flushing, useless if the trailer decides to wag side to side, no good for hilly terrain, and i like having total control. i've compared them both and there's far more advantages with electric than surge, even if i do need to watch the electrics closer. i have the plates on my axles for mounting brakes so i'll be buying quality electric brakes this summer sometime.

Lake Erie Perch (or lack of) making me angry!
ch312 replied to sneak_e_pete's topic in General Discussion
ya know that old saying "you never know unless you try"? you should be lifting the rod after the first tap. setting the hook often results in a lost minnow so when fishing deeper water many people wait until they feel the weight of the perch before setting the hook to avoid having to rebait constantly. if you use sharp hooks you don't really have to set the hook as the fish hook themselves resulting in more fish and less lost bait. using an underwater camera while ice fishing has taught me just how light fish can bite. you'd be surprised by how many 12" perch can suck in a minnow and spit it out causing the slightest movement on a spring bobber. what line are you using? -
you're looking at a minimum increase of $47 per month or $564/yr to watch tv with a sharper image. i dunno about you, but i can find quite a few thing's to spend my money on instead of hd programming that IMO makes very little difference unless you sit close to your tv. basically, the only way for you to decide if it's worth it for you is to view the same tv's side by side with one having HD and the other standard. people complain about not having money and being in debt, yet many of those same people have zero problems handing over any extra money on stuff like this. i'll never understand the way some people operate...

suggestions on a substitute planner board reel(s)
ch312 replied to vinnimon's topic in General Discussion
how do those eye bolts work on the mast? i was going to use replacement pulleys off big jon riggers, but couldn't find any so i used steel pulleys. last trip i noticed some abrasion on the board line from rubbing on the edge of the pulley. how long have you been using that mast and have you noticed any wear from those eye bolts? -

nice boards. i prefer this design that permits the boards to fold down without touching any hardware and risking loosing something. the holes are off center so they'll fold one way and stop when the boards are fully open. the angle with all the holes isn't really necessary, but i had never used boards before so i had no clue where to mount the line holder to make the boards run right. i also went with natural wood to avoid touching up chipped paint in the future and the wood soaks up some water making them pull even better. they work very well. as for the mast, i went with some aluminum pipe that fits in the seat bases perfectly to avoid drilling holes and adding a base. and a pic of the rod holders that use the seat post. again, i didn't want to drill holes or have mounting plates in the boat. -

you built the boards yet? i made up a set of folding ones out of cedar and aluminum that work very well for less than it costs to buy one store bought folding one. i could post pics for ya -

i just used the plastic spools that the planer board line came on with stainless hole covers (to cover old plumbing or electrical holes in tiles and such) on each end, put 2 bearings in each end of the spools, made up a handle and they were good to go. they do take longer to reel in, but it works for me and i had all the stuff around the house. one thing i've been having trouble figuring out is i used stainless rod going through the mast and mounted a reel on each side, but the turning spools tighten or loosen the knobs that hold the reels on. i've tried clear hose and then springs on the rod to prevent the spools from spinning the knobs off and it works fine if free spooling, but when i tighten the "drag" to slowly let line out it'll turn the knobs. is there something i can use on the rod or in the knobs (threaded brass inserts) that'll act like a lock nut preventing the knobs form turning with the spools? -
the type of rust proofing that ziebart installs is the worst choice you could make as any tiny hole easily turns into a bubble which in turn holds moisture rather than repelling it. oil spraying is far superior which is why most people now go with that. krown works very well. electronic rust inhibitors only seem like a good idea when you're talking to someone that sells them. i've seen a few tests done on tv and the internet that showed near zero difference between "protected" and unprotected.

you missed my first post where i mentioned i have zero issues with bluetooth/hands free and the other post where i said i have an issue with people driving while their faces are buried in a cell phone. i'd rather sit in an elevator for a couple hours longer instead of someone answering my call on their cell while driving and causing an accident. you're totally missing the point and you're comparing apples to oranges. a carpenter or mechanic needs those tools because it's physically impossible to complete many tasks without their tools. it's not a matter of convenience, it's necessity. on the other hand, someone that does business through a computer or phone has the option of waiting until they're at home or the office to do their job. a cell phone makes it's more convenient to communicate and is not a necessity to do business, unless you don't own a computer, land line, or can't work in the office. many older folks running successful businesses still rely on emailing from a computer and calling from a land line. they can do it, but younger folks must have cell phones to do the same thing? i don't think so. and no, i'm not some old man nagging about "kids these days". i'm 26 and just aware of how dependent people my age and younger are of cell phones and technology and how bad many think they need a cell to function. i have friends with the same opinion as yours and i can't help but giggle and shake my head when they're without their cells for a short period and start going loony

don't hold out and keep driving around looking for schools on bottom or you'll be missing a bunch of great fish and action. just like many other species, schools of big perch are often suspended and nowhere near bottom. fishing on bottom is easier, but many times the biguns are higher in the water column just waiting to be tossed in the bucket by a savvy angler a dropshot rig and minnow is great for feeling bites in the deeper water. i prefer 8 lb power pro with a 4-6 lb flourocarbon leader on my ultralight rod. you can feel the fish fart near your bait

awesome, thanks for the help. i'll take a look under there tomorrow for the plates. it's a 2006 bear trailer for my 16.5ft boat and 5 bolt

if a cell phone is the only way to have a social life or do business, could you please explain how civilization managed to function before cell phones even existed? remember, cell phones are a want and not a need you don't need to use a cell phone while driving, you're just choosing to do so and in the process you're putting yourself and others at a much greater risk due to lack of concentration. considering how bad the outcome could be, i'd say driving a vehicle with your face buried in a cell phone is one of the most selfish moves one can make. but, that's just my opinion. you may or may not agree

two thumbs up to the cops on this one and i can only hope they'll get even sneakier to catch all those idiots driving around with their faces buried in their phones. witnessing near accidents caused by people on their cell phones is almost a daily event and something needs to be done. personally, i'd like to see a minimum $500 fine and 4 points to get it into these morons heads that paying attention to the road is just a bit more important than texting your buddy. the only way to get these selfish, ignorant fools to stop texting while driving would be a feature that disables cell phones (that aren't connected via bluetooth) that are traveling over a certain speed. it's pathetic that people are defending those that text while driving and complaining that cops are doing something about it. yes, let's defend these idiots that are putting other peoples lives at risk, causing headaches for others, and raising all of our insurance rates.

while my boat isn't really that heavy (2500-2700lbs?) and the truck (ram 1500) can handle it, i'd like to add electric brakes to the trailer for any future "what if" scenario and to extend the life of my trucks brakes. but, i haven't a clue what i need to buy. all i need to do is add the brakes and run wires as i already have a controller and 7pin. what do i need to measure to find the right drum assembly for my trailer? do i need to add brakes to both sides of the axle or just one side? any brands to stay away from?

yes, but it may take a while for that solar panel to heat up some water for coffee and i dont think you'll won't be charging much when it's dark out. you get a small stove and a charging unit with infinite fuel that works whenever you want it to. no matter how you slice it, this is a cool toy at a reasonable price.

nice! i fished 60fow and shallower today and didn't get a single nibble. i guess i'll be hitting some deeper water next run... the speed of the ball is in meters per second?
-
trout worms aka red wigglers are much smaller than nightcrawlers/earthworms and only grow to 3-4" max. plus, they survive under water longer and wiggle on the hook a lot more than nightcrawlers. they're a much better worm for fishing.
-
i have a few hundred in the basement they're a pain to find so i went with a vermicompost bin in my basement. the worms breed like crazy in the bin and they turn food scraps into primo fertilizer rather quickly. win win

thanks for the tips guys, but i don't have any planer boards yet. i'll be looking into them in the near future.

seeing as i finally have a boat for downrigging, i'd like to get out this week sometime to try for my first lake ontario fish. that's right, i've never wet a line in lake o before i'll be looking for any species of trout and salmon on the west end of the lake to get familiar with the boat, setup, and style of fishing. any tips for the first timer in regards to depth, presentation, etc? i'm currently limited to 2 electric riggers and a 10 color lead core setup. if i like the game i'll be adding a mast/boards, another lead core rig, and a better sonar. these are the only spoons i have at the moment. what would your first picks be? what are some "must haves" that i should add to the box?

well, i guess i'm calling state farm tomorrow to see why i'm being charged extra for something that doesn't exist.

after reading this thread i finally called my insurance to get a price on coverage for my boat. 06 yamaha v165, 90hp and it's $425/yr. apparently i gotta pay extra because i'm a "new" boat owner? i can understand charging extra for vehicle insurance as there's different levels of licensing, but for boats too? is this about right or should i be calling one of the listed insurance companies for a price?
