  1. Finished my drive from Fort McMurray back to Brampton, via Edmonton last night. Thanks to those who gave me recommendations from my other post a few days agon. Didn't get to stop at the Nipigon river as recommended. After visiting an old friend in Dryden who I haven't seen since we graduated high school and looking at the time I wouldn't make the river before dark. I decided to stop at a little roadside lake south of Dryden called Jackfish Lake. It was about 2:30 when I stopped, and only fished for an hour. I used spoons and white twister tales. I landed two little smallmouth bass about 1.5 - 2 lbs range and one pike about 3 - 4 lbs. The two bass were my first ever smallmouth. Released them both. The pike swallowed the lure deeply and was bleeding alot. Decided to keep this one for the table. Slipped and landed on a rock on my keester. Cell was in my back pocket too. No more screen. First order of business, repair phone. Saw tons of deer, one dead moose, 4 bald eagles and a large tree south of Sudbury cracked off and on fire that looked to have been struck by lightning. All in all it was a good drive but long. Glad to be back with family again.
  2. hey everyone, been awhile since I've been on the board. I'm leaving Edmonton today to drive back to Toronto today and should reach North Western Ontario by tomorrow. I'd like to stop and do some fishing around the above mentioned areas but it is a new area for me and would like some help in finding a decent shore fishing location. I can't really afford a guided trip. If anyone can help me would be appreciated and even better if anyone is in that area and would like to join me that would be great. As for species is doesn't really matter. Pike, walleye, trout, etc. Would just like to put some lures in the water and have a decent chance of catching something. Hope to hear from some of you and hopefully fish with some of you as well. Cheers, Tony.
  3. Well its been NYE since I was last out and I've read a few of the reports here lately and see BOQ is producing well. Would like to get out this sunday with my 7 year old nephew, so because of him a hut would probably be best. Need transportation to hut as well. Can anyone help me out? Tony.
  4. Has anyone thought of asking Innisfil town council if they'd be willing to waive the parking fee as this event is benefitting a member of their community? Or better yet, have all the parking fees from participants from this event be donated to the Tyler fund.
  5. When I was fishing NYE I caught a perch with what appeared to be either a "growth" or it looked like an "injury" with a piece of skin/flesh hanging off. Wasn't a big thing but I decided to examine closer when I was home and cleaning up the fish. When I rinsed off the perch I looked at this thing and it wasn't an injury or growth. It was a small sliver of clear plastic, kinda like what ziploc bags are made of which the perch ingested and was folded over one of its gill plates and one end of the plastic was sticking out through the gill opening. Was a reminder to me that even the smallest piece of pollution can have an effect. So PLEASE bring back EVERY piece of refuse you take out into the wilderness or waterways and also any other garbage you see left behind from less responsible people. So what have any of you found in any fish that shouldn't be there?
  6. Thanks for the heads up. Any recommendations? Remember I'll be hiking it. No sled.
  7. I was thinking Big Bay. Would Minnie Blakely shoal be safe? Its not far from Massassauga Pt and I believe I read its kinda dicey there.
  8. Where are you and how long you going for? Been about the same amount of time for me since I was there last.
  9. I am toying with the idea of heading there Saturday but would like to know if anyone can advise me as to a location thats walker friendly but might hold a reasonable chance at a walleye. I have room for additional passengers if anyone can else wants to go. I'm in Brampton. Tony.
  10. Got out today and dropped my lines by about 8am. Started In about 8 fow and hit about half a dozen perch right away with 2 keepers...then nothing for then next 1/2 hour. Moved locations and got into some more in about 12 fow. The Perch were biting very light and stealing the minnows left, right, and centre. Lost my favorite rod down the hole. Was re-baiting my set line when I looked over and saw the tip of my rod starting to bend down. I ran to it...was only about 10 - 12 feet away...and just as I got to it it went rocketing down the hole. Wonder what it was? A couple guys near me caught a muskie about 10 inches..a bruiser..lol. Someone who was renting a hut nearby caught a pike which looked about 4 or 5 lbs. Myself, I landed about 70 or so from 8am till about 4:30. Kept 35. A few jumbos in there as well. As for the sizes it was a mixed bag. Caught a few perch that weren't much bigger then the minnows I was using and my biggest was about 13 inches. The average size seemed to be about 8 - 10 inches. Also caught about 15 rock bass. The ice is about 7 - 8 inches thick with about an inch of snow on top. "WEAR KLEETS". Learned my lesson in previous seasons when trying to walk out on glasslike ice and end up doing moves that would make most figure skaters jealous. ATV's and sleds out there all over the place. Even cars and at least one full sized pick-up truck I watched drive back and forth from Georgina Island. Wonder what they are thinking? Sorry, no digital camera so no pics. Will have to get one soon. Cheers all and heres to great fishing in 2010. Happy New Year everyone. Tony
  11. Contact the managment and voice your concerns. As for your neighbour saying there weren't any witnesses...isn't your wife a witness to the dog biting her? If you have a video camera film the dog leash free whenever you can and record the dates and times. With video evidence its hard for your neighbour to deny the dog isn't let out leash free. Also good to have in case of a second bite and then having a court case ensue.
  12. Just wondering if anyone knows what the ice conditions and thickness are. Thinking of heading there tomorrow to check it out and drop a line if its safe enough. Cheers, Tony.
  13. Was wondering if anyone could give me an update on the ice conditions for Virginia beach? Was thinking of taking a drive up there saturday morning to check it out. Cheers, Tony.
  14. Hey everyone, Been awhile since I've been on the board but am getting the itch to get out. Was wondering about the ice thickness or existence of any at all particularly Cook's Bay and Virginia Beach on Simcoe and the conditions on Nippising particularly South Bay area. Cheers and look forward to fishing with some of you again this year. Tony.
  15. Was hoping to get out on Saturday and was wondering if anyone could tell what the general ice conditions are? Cheers, Tony.
  16. I think people also have to remember these people are opening on holidays and WORKING while the rest of us are going fishing. They are enabling us to use live bait on the days when every where else is closed. If someone is willing to pay the price why complain about it? It makes me wonder about people sometimes when they talk of all the money they spend on boats, rods, sleds, huts, tackle, etc. and then complain about spending a few dollars more on one of the most important aspects of fishing..
  17. I add a WOW to the second period. Nice save our boy in net made!
  18. Fang - Where are you heading to and whats your target? Misfish - Care to hit Virginia Beach Saturday?
  19. Hey there Fang? I see you're in Oakville. Where are you planning on fishing? I just called the Hwy 400 guy at the PetroC service centre and his recorded message says he will be open from 5am to 10am NYD.
  20. "aboot"? GCD...are you taking a shot at us Canucks? lol
  21. If conditions are good I'll be heading to simcoe. Your welcome to join me.
  22. Well I couldn't resist going again today as the forecast for the weekend has me wondering, so I decided to take advantage of hitting the ice now. All I can say is to the numbers. I set up just about parallel to the huts but not further out. I found a little hole that was about 10 - 12 fow. Within one minute I had fish on. Followed by another. It slowed a bit and I got about a dozen keepers in an hour and through back about as many small ones. Then the bite died off for about an hour with only about half a dozen in total with 5 of those going back down the hole. Then a heavy snowsquall came over the area with some gusty winds as well. Not enjoyable weather except......the bite turned on as the light dimmed. I then got, in the next hour and a half, about another 50 keeping in total for the day 40 keepers and about 40 - 50 throw backs. All from the same 2 holes. I got two jumbos about 12 inches or so. I saw two other guys out there who had some real hogs. About 15 inches +. Most of the slush had hardened overnight with some again being found around the snow drifts. In total there were about 20 - 25 people out and for the most part everyone I talked to caught fish . Hope the weather stays cool for you guys who are venturing out tomorrow. Cheers, Tony.
  23. Thats a great and thoughtful gift walleyeman. Merry Christmas to you and family.
  24. Hey Terry, yeah I saw a couple ski-doos out there and sly was useing his Wilcraft - http://www.thewilcraft.com/the_vehicle.php. Looked like it could be kinda heavy and he didn't break throught anywhere I can see although he did find a few slushy spots, usually where there was a small snow drift. The Georgina Island Ferry is still running so stay FAR away from its path. The Chippewa's have a sign posted at the access by the Virginia Beach Marina saying this should be used as an emergency route only and ice conditions aren't safe but from what I can see no probs out there. As for Saturday, it doesn't look good. High of around +10 and rain. Tomorrow looks good though. Cheers, Tony.
  25. Hey Everyone, Got out this afternoon. Didn't get my lines down till around 3pm or so. Fished for about 2 and a half hours. Caught a dozen perch with 8 keepers. Only saw two other people out there . They were on their way in as I got out there. One said he was a member of the Simcoe Board and this board as well. He said his name was "slyatv" . They looked to have done well. Not sure how long they were out though. As my excursion was decided last minute I had no minnows and they offered me some and thats what I caught them with. I used a panfish / pickeral rig and got about 4 on that and I got the rest on small teardrop lures tipped with the minnows. The conditions were decent. A bit of slush on some spots but nothing too thick. Nothing more then about 2 or 3 inches but I was on foot. Everywhere I popped holes there was at least 5 to 8 inches of good ice. High chance I will go again tomorrow morning. Anyone else gonna be out there? If so I'll be wearing a big green worksuit. Cheersand Merry Christmas everyone.
