  1. We used to sight fish them in really shallow water similar to this...we'd use small minnow on smaller hooks with a small split shot just up the line 1 foot. Make sure your hooks are razor sharp and use a braid mainline with a flourocarbon leader for solid hooksets and protection from their teeth. The gar we always used to get always seemed to jump like crazy! Have fun.
  2. I'd personally try to find a yamaha from the mid-late 1990's. Ive put thousands and thousands of hours on my 1992 2.2 hp and never a problem. You'll save some cash too! If you are buying new grab a Honda like fisherman said.
  3. This round of custom painted lures i wanted to give the fish some colour schemes they have never seen before. SO armed with some Krylon spraypaints, a roll of grid drywall tape, and some painters tape i went to work. I cant wait to get these coated with envirotex and try them out!! I find its much easier to get quality pics before coating the lures with the near mirror like envirotex topcoat. As i was looking at the lures i thought up some amusing names for the different paintjobs.(yeah, yeah small things amuse small minds...lol) Green Gridded Bass (southern toxic version) Ingredients: Undercoat- Colour Place white 3 coats Basecoat- Flourescent Green Belly Overcoat- Colour Place White Back Overcoat- Colour Place Black Side Overcoat- Krylon Silver RedBacked Running Rudder Ingredients: Undercoat- Colour Place white 3 coat Basecoat- Krylon Silver Belly Overcoat- Colour Place White Back Overcoat Stage 1- Krylon Ruddy Brown Back overcoat Stage 2- Colour Place Black Side Overcoat- Krylon Yellow Citrus Scotsman Ingredients: Undercoat- Colour PLace White 3 coats Basecoat- Krylon Yellow Belly Overcoat- White Back Overcoat- Colour Place Black Grid Side Overcoat Stage 1- Yellow Grid Side Overcoat Stage 2- Flourescent Blaze Orange Bee 52 Bomber Undercoat- Colour Place White 3 coats Basecoat- Krylon Yellow Bee Stripes and Back Overcoat- Colour Place Black Belly Overcoat- Krylon Yellow Wow were these fun to paint!! I have 4 more that i will have pics of very soon.
  4. Awesome pike!! What did you get it on?
  5. Nice!! I just painted a bunch up today...some silver, some flour green, yellow... i am going to get an airbrush...some great effects using those! Are you coating the lures with a tough finish? Envirotex works awesome but isnt easy to use and you'd need to make a rotating drying rack. Tackle underground is an awesome site for lure making....i havent found any other sites nearly as good.
  6. 34 feet deep! wow thats suprising as all i had heard was the 13-14' that corey talked about...maybe i got it confused with another lake.
  7. I dont suppose if you noticed if they had the georgian bay 2203 set did you?(byng outlet to parry sound) Really any of the georgian bay sets i would love to get...
  8. OH yeah...about cross border fees. If a package is stopped in customs(seems to be random...out of 500 packages from the US i have had maybe 10 that i had to pay customs fees on) you will be subject to customs fee if delivered by USPS. The amount of fees depends on a percentage of the declared value of the goods.(somehwere around 15%) If UPS is the carrier and the package is stopped in customs, there is a $30 handling fee in addition to the customs fees.(i wont bid on an auction if UPS is the only way they'll ship)
  9. Yep...ebay rules for tackle! I am patient and bid on lures i want. Sometimes the prices are incredible. I bought 14 mepps Xtra deep #2 spinners this year for trout fishing for $24 shipped....also bought many rapalas for less than $3 each shipped. Some of the hard to find older lures though....rapala HJ-14 in orange crawfish seller wanting $30 for example....LOL
  10. Very nice!! Thos johnson silver minnows work great for pike. A similar spoon that has caught me a ton of bass and pike is the Tony Acetta Weed Dodger...great old lure!
  11. Alot of the shallow lakes in that area the fish are full of white and black worms.....now i have heard that there is some decent crappie in bass lake, but i havent tried fishing it personally.
  12. We went to a zone 16 pike lake last weekend for opener....every fish was caught in water between 2-5 feet. We sighted a couple of big pike in the 2 foot depth....think shallow this year for sure!! But thiis water is murky, so a clear water like the french might be a bit deeper...good luck!!
  13. Well i was able to get out this wekend and the new bait did really well!! The biggest pike was only 6 pounds, but the finish held up over quite a few fish with minimal scratching. The best fish catching lure over the cold rainy weekend was the orange tiger stripe rip redfin.
  14. Yeah brookies are such a beautiful fish...and often the scenery that surrounds the creeks they lurk in, is just about as amazing! If you want bigger ones go north and fish some of the tiny lakes that are stocked in a canoe.
  15. Nice....i'd love to bring in some huge pike on a flyrod...that would be so fun. Ive tied some smaller pike flies and got some decent smaller pike(8lbs), but no huge ones. There is not alot of huge pike in the area where we live, but i have no doubt there is a couple of 30 pounders here and there.(southern georgian bay)
  16. Sweet flies!! What do you guys use for leaders?
  17. Envirotex is a bit expensive($1 an ounce), but compared the cost of cranks its nothing and it goes pretty far. You can coat 4 lures by mixing a quarter ounce. If there was some way to slow the curing process you could get more...maybe 8 larger cranks like the redfin and the hj-14's. I only made my rack hold 4 at a time though. Lots on ebay, but pricey and not many ship to canada... http://cgi.ebay.com/Envirotex-Lite-Plastic-Resin-Book-Tile-Art-PourOn-Craft-/360262034397?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item53e14a63dd Here is the place where i bought the envirotex (local store in ontario, one in barrie, one in toronto and one in ottawa..might be one in hamilton too, also do mail order) https://www.currys.com/catalogsearch2.htm?SEARCH=envirotex Envirotex can be tough to use for some people too from what i have read online. I didnt have a problem with it except i put a coat on a 4th lure and it was starting to set when i was done the lure only half way! I managed to get it fixed, with a quick sand(once it was cured) and another fresh coat overtop. I thought i might have mixed too much hardener in but then i realized what the problem was....i was mixing and applying in a very nice sheltered area of our yard that happened to be in full blazing sun. The sun had hastened the curing process. The amount of time spent mixing and making sure you use the same amounts of resin and hardener is crucial with envirotex.
  18. I just thought i should throw this up...... if anyone has a bunch of chipped crankbaits you dont use anymore i'd be in on a tradein of sorts. I was thinking about something like you send me 5 crankbaits of a similar size(any good quality brand) and i'll send you one back fully painted to a colour scheme of your choice. They dont have to be the same type of baits.(some can be fat rap type, some deep divers some topwater ect) I only want lures that can be brought back to life though.(so no cracked bodies, broken lips ect) I have an immaculate trading/buying/selling record online and can point you to hundreds of referances on both ebay(600 @ 100% positive) and trading sites.(over 200 @ 100% positive)
  19. I wasnt able to get out on opening day but we got out on the sunday the day after opener....we walked a few km through some nasty bush and got a number of small trout(brookies and bows). We spotted a few large spawners but they were acting very, very spooky and in the rough country and the tiny river getting good positioning on them without spooking them was very difficult. Right near the end of the river i hooked into this beauty 25" male on my medium light Abu Garcia 6lb test trilene big game and a #3 mepps silver spinner. The country is harsh for sure, but thats what i love about it. Total people on the river that sunday = 0 Total deer carcasses seen = 4 Total live deer seen = 4 Total Grouse seen = 6 With beautiful scenery like this waterfall, the rough country is so worth trekking through.(my apologies for my camera settings....i had it on indoor mode...doh) What a great outing!!
  20. Thats a beautiful river!! NIce fish too! Way to go!
  21. I had grand plans to go camping a bunch of time this summer in the far north....not looking good when it costs you 200 in fuel just to get there and home...sigh. AT least i have some sweet places to camp within an hours drive. I am going to have to check out the reservation when i am fishing the area.
  22. NIce brookies! I love small stream fishing for resident brookies, bows and especially browns. Nothing like nailing a dozen trout in an afternoon and having a deer walk within 10 feet from you.
  23. Great to see the pup get a new home.
  24. Lots, and lots of people fail to catch fall fish at the notty!! Keep trying and be persistant, you'll get some.
