Thanks for the info, I kind of figured they would be with no thaw this winter. I'll pack the ice fishing gear and probably head to Scugog.

Hey, I am heading out to Durham Region this weekend as my mom is throwing my wife a baby shower. We are expecting our first in March. So my fishing days are going to be limited real soon Anyways I thought since I am out that way I may as well get some fishing in. Does anyone know if there is enough open water on the east creeks to fish? or should I just pack the ice fishing gear and find some hardwater fishing instead. Thanks in advance for any info

I think that last post pretty much sums it up. Another point to consider is crowding and if you are like me and hate it, try your best to fish less on days (ie weekends) and if a spot is packed with fish but full of fisher persons I just move on as you can probably find a good spot further up or down the stream with less crowding.

I took my brother with my free ticket, he is new to the sport in that its taken about 27 years for him to start to develop a passion for it. We didn't buy much, looked at some outiftters and lodges for a future trip one day. Best thing was I subscribed to a fly fishing magazine canada, I am a sucker for almost any magazine subscription but hopefully it will inspire me to get out fly fishing more often. I guess the only disappointment was no April Vokey at the Fly Fishing Magazine booth not that she was expected to be at the show, but a guy can hope.

I think we need to relax we are getting a little bent out of shape over a comment that probably wasn't thought through. I have also encountered this opinion from people who are not informed on the subject. I will add this I think it was the nature of things or another show and they were trying to determine whether fish feel pain and I think the conclusion was they didn't know yet but that it was unlikely they did. They certainly feel something and do feel stress but it is thought that the brain of fish lacks the complexity of mammals to turn stress/pain into what we know as a pain to be a much more emotional and complex response or something along those lines. Anyways it leaves the possibility that fish feel pain and that C & R could be considered cruel if that was ever proven. However many anglers go above and beyond to put the least amount of stress on fish with C & R including barbless hooks, etc.

Well, its a fishing and boats show. So the major difference is if you are looking for info on hunting, camping and other outdoor pursuits it won't be found. So it depends on your interests, I think I like the Sportsmen's show a little better because it has more variety but usually go to both and will be heading to the fishing show in the afternoon.

No problem, I'm in the same boat what a help that website has been with trip planning. The forum is full of helpful people.

People will probably be pretty tighted lipped about their favorite lakes to fish in algonquin. I suggest trying a search here or myccr.com and probably best to pick up the backroads map book of algonquin it has lots of info each lake and fish quality. Also look at old stocking reports from the MNR. From my experience, the longer the portage and the more off the beaten track the better the fishing is.

I suggest if you truly want to know if its legal or not you consult a legal expert like a lawyer and not a fishing forum because ultimately you will get a lot of opinion that although valid in a moral or ethical debate may not steer you to the correct legal decision unless a lawyer is on the board and takes the time to research the answer and post for free. I'm sure its something that is done whether its deemed legal or not. This kind of post is a can of worms for a forum discussion.

That is a solid argument, I have a 1-piece and the transport and storage is more annoying especially when you have a small car.

I second myccr.com its a canoeing website that is full of useful information especially on algonquin park. Other websites are friends of algonquin Park, and Ontario Parks. Looks like you are only doing day trips but if you decide to become a little more adventurous you can borrow a copy of Kevin Callan's Algonquin Park book from your local library, lots of variety of routes to consider. Another great resource are Backroad map books and they have one for algonquin region, provide info on the quality of fishing of lakes and rivers. Keep in mind that novice canoeists like yourself tend to move slower than experienced one's so when charting distance remember you may not go as fast so someone may tell you it takes 2hrs but it could take you 4. I think I read somewhere average speed of travel via canoe is 3-5km/hr. Also wind is always a factor, especially on bigger lakes.

That's why god created the canoe but I see your point for a boat and motor. Been to Restoule its a great spot, enjoy!

Whats your set up? How remote can you go? I like the French River and Algonquin is a big park so you could always go to a different area. A non-operating park like Nagonosh has excellent fishing.

This website is excellent for private cottage listings which for my situation is the only way to go. http://www.ontariocottagerental.com/ We are in the process of booking a cottage for 10 people plus multiple dogs and people tend to give us a harder time with German Shepherds.

Interesting. Kind of makes you wonder about this new company in charge. I am not planning to book anything this coming summer but have to say I had no trouble with the prior service provider. Hopefully they work out the kinks soon, July and August are big months to book trips.

I have heard there have been issues booking back country this year as Ontario Parks changed service providers. Any issues?

Thanks again for the info.

Born in 82 and started working consistently when I was 15before that at A&P for 6.40/hr. I saved enough money to buy my first boat. It was also the first and most satisfying job I quit The boss was such dirt ball. When he finally pushed me too much and I no longer needed the job as I was ready to go to school in the fall, I quit on a busy holiday weekend and left him high and dry. Now I know it sounds bad, but really this guy was completely unprofessional and a real, I still to this day feel he deserved what he got. Anyways after that I slugged boxes at the LCBO distribution warehouse for a summer while in university made $10/hr. Then I moved onto the swanky Toronto Golf Club for half a summer until I realized that the hospitality industry and serving the wealthy elite was not for me and went onto work in another warehouse and factory for another making around 16/hr couple summers before finishing my degree. When I graduated a few years back I took my first full time job as entry level accountant making 35K and after a few years of slogging away at work and doing my designation I graduated with my CMA and its been smooth sailing since. Reading some of the other posts I certainly had it a lot easier than you guys from my parents generation. But I guess things have changed in order to get ahead it seems you have to work harder at school than just work. Personally I think I have done enough formal schooling and will encourage my kids if it interests them a trade seems like a great way to earn a living.

It looks great, we rented on Redstone last year and it sounds similar. I love the idea of getting a canoe into some more remote lakes. Hopefully we'll be able to get the week we want. Its tough for us to find the right cottage because it includes my inlaws as well as dogs.

As long as I can get into bass I am happy. Thanks!

Hi, My family is looking to rent a cottage this summer in the Haliburton Area and there seems to be a lot of nice cottages on Kennisis Lake. How is the fishing on the lake? I haven't found out much other than that it has bass and trout. Any info is appreciated,

Hey, Being under 25 is definitely a factor. Some companies don't rent or will charge an additional fee. Also make sure your current car insurance covers you for rental cars and out of province as often times the rental companies will charge and insurance that is almost as much as the daily rental price. When my wife (g/f at the time) and I went to New Brunswick for a week when we around 23 we used rent a wreck. They rent used cars, we saved a bundle of money, got over 1000kms for a week and they actually rented to us without all the extra charges and hassles. I don't know what their distribution is like out west though.

Free Ticket to the Spring Fishing and Boat Show...

This topic will probably go down the tubes pretty fast. But I see the value in a domestic fish market if done in an ethical and environmentally conscious way. I can't comment on the state of the commercial fishing practices on Nippissing but what I do know is if you have ever purchased any fish from your local grocery store you are likely supporting what is typically a terribly run industry. Many of the fish we enjoy from the store are not sustainable, are polluted, and create massive amounts of environmental pollution in getting to our table. So a domestic industry done with care could help in this respect. It is up to the citizen as a consumer to be informed and make better choices. Not too mention we need to be vocal and steer our governments in the right direction. Anyways I am probably preaching to the choir here as most of us as anglers and hunters understand conservation and harvest can be achieved with some common sense and balance.
