  1. Dick's Sporting Goods is in the Walden Galleria Mall. Gander Mountain is about 15-20 minutes from Walden Galleria.
  2. It's a beautiful trail but there are sections that are quite steep and rugged. Good hiking shoes are a must. It was so peaceful as you walk under the completely treed canopy covering the trail. The only complaint I have are the noisy helicopters that totally spoils the experience of the nice walk. I didn't fish but opted to go shopping on both sides of the border since MJL cautioned that I was too old and out of shape to be able to go up and down the Gorge. As it turned out, I went down and back up twice (but without any load).
  3. A roof rack is recommended. I have always had trouble with the foam becoming dislodged due to wind turbulence when passing big trucks and in strong side winds. I stop every hundred km or so to check the tension. The problem I have with buying a roof rack is that it is car model specific. What fits on a Civic does not fit on an Accord. And I need to use either car that is available to me. I do plan to buy one next year.
  4. Sorry to hear. I guess there will be no hauling of any big fish any time soon. Once you get better we will help get you back in shape. In the meantime get lots of rest so things heal up.
  5. You seem to be thinking about Kevlar and that is a good consideration if weight is a high priority. I have a fiberglass 15-footer and the weight is a problem for me. I always need two persons to load or unload from the top of the car. I am only 125 lbs and there is no way I can lift or portage my 60 lbs canoe. Also with a 15-footer you will quickly out-grow it as the kid gets older. With the yoke in the middle there isn't much room for an additional seat.
  6. I must say that after so many years I cannot recall if I ever touched those slimy buggers with bare hands. Still a bit repulsive but it's a favourite fish to catch .
  7. I also heard that four of the OFC regulars went on Monday. Maybe they were embarrassed that they didn't do well.
  8. Young man, I can relate to what you are going through. We have a fellow on this board aka MJL who was addicted since the age of 4 and he still has this incurable condition.
  9. Surface temperatures in western Lake Ontario seems high at the moment. We had east winds for a few days that moved a lot of warm water in. Wait for the north or north-west winds to pick up to push it back out. Lake Ont Temps
  10. I'm on vacation every day. The US numbers could be partly due to the increasingly large numbers of temps, part-time, casual and contract jobs that get no vacation. This group of people get no benefits either.
  11. My contribution was to make sure these guys were fed and ready to lift those heavy carp out of the water. I switched to taking lighter equipment at the last moment and then totally forgot my reel at home in my rush to get over to the Islands. Pizza was $3.99 for a small slice over at the Islands. I guess I didn't have to buy but our guys needed the energy for the fight and as you saw in one of the pics with the two of them landing one of those monsters. Nevertheless, it was still a nice outing yesterday.
  12. Now I'm getting kind of nervous traveling with those guys.
  13. Sure was an enjoyable trip. There weren't much mosquitoes and flies but gees there were lots of spiders and they go everywhere. I'm sure they are crawling around in my garage now. The webs are so sturdy they could not be destroyed when I used the pressure washer to clean my car this morning. While there I thought that Victor and Wolfville should have come along with us. You guys would have really enjoyed it too. There's always the next year.
  14. It's something you never want to happen but it did. Source Toronto Star Sunday Aug 12: Two young siblings are in hospital with serious head injuries after a boating accident Saturday afternoon. The boy, 9, and girl, 10, were riding in the three-seat inflatable inner tube when a second motorboat collided with it around 3 p.m. on Rice Lake, off the shore of Harwood, northeast of Port Hope, said OPP. Both children were rushed to Cobourg’s Northumberland Hills Hospital, before the boy was airlifted to Sick Children’s hospital in Toronto. A marine reconstruction technician is assisting the on-going investigation with Northumberland OPP.
  15. Very nice store. I was also there with MJL on Saturday between 1:00pm and 3:00pm. Family went for three days of power shopping in Troy, Auburn Hills and Birch Run. Stayed in Troy near Somerset Mall. Too far to go more than once a year.
  16. But you must be able to tolerate mega amounts of geese droppings in some spots.
  17. It's LED technology and lightweight making it easy to carry around. I saw it at Bass Pro and tried it in the store. Looks good. It will not be as bright as the propane Coleman but that could be a good thing too.
  18. If 3,300 fish died and the average weight of each is 20 lbs then you get 66,000 lbs or approx. 30 metric tonnes.
  19. The anchor is a pain . My first one is a bleach jug filled with sand. In fact, it's still in my garage.
  20. Additional reasons are: - carpers don't hold their fish up using the gill plates to prevent then from moving around. They're slimy. - carpers are 99 percent fishing from shore with lots of room around compared to being in a boat with a muskie or pike - serious carpers tend to be sensitive to the well being of the fish to the point of using cushioned landing pads. Close to the ground means less chance of hurting the fish if it falls - crouching also minimizes how much of the background is seen in your picture. In a boat you see water.
  21. Here's an article from the Peterborough Examiner dated today. The die-off does not appear to be in Little Lake yet. City ready for carp crisis BRENDAN WEDLEY and ANDREA HOUSTON Local News - Friday, July 27, 2007 @ 00:00 There are plans to handle the carp die-off should it spread within the city's jurisdiction along the Otonabee River and Little Lake, city officials say. While the city government is waiting to see if the carp die-off hits Peterborough, it will do what needs to be done should more dead carp start washing up on shores, utility services director Wayne Jackson said. "It will be slightly different, but not much different, than cleaning up the lake," he said. "We're going to be wanting to wear protective gloves and coveralls and boots. And we're going to want to have a protective vessel to put these carps. "We're certainly ready for it.... We're certainly hoping we don't need it." Meanwhile, 18 city lifeguards were given training yesterday on how to handle and dispose of dead carp found on both Beavermead Park and Rogers Cove beaches, said Brent Copeland, a recreationist with the city. "The lifeguards check the entire beach at the start of the shift and monitor the water throughout the day," Copeland said. "We were notified that there was no risk to humans. " Lifeguards have been instructed not to speak to the media and instead divert all media inquiries to his office, he said. Many of the aquatic staff are teenagers, he said, and are not completely informed on the issue to be able to discuss it with the media. Nicole Black, a staff member with the YMCA children's camp who was at Beavermead beach yesterday morning, said she saw the lifeguards remove a dead carp the day before. "We were just playing on the beach. Some of the kids were poking it," Black said. "The lifeguards got it out of the way. "I think it's fine to swim in the lake." The city has been following the carp-die off since early June when dead carp were found in large numbers in Lake Scugog. The problem spread to Sturgeon, Cameron and Pigeon lakes and Pigeon River last month and into Chemong and Buckhorn lakes this month. More than 10,000 dead carp have been found. Smith-Ennismore-Lakefield Township alone has collected more than 23,000 tonnes of dead carp. The die-off has not spread to Little Lake, the Ministry of Natural Resources states. The Examiner has received at least three reports of dead carp in Little Lake and the ministry has confirmed it received one report. On his way home for lunch yesterday, Mayor Paul Ayotte strolled down to Rogers Cove beach to see for himself if there was any dead carp. "We get lots of tourist who come just to fish for carp, so I hope this doesn't impact the industry too much," Ayotte said, adding he is confident that the city will be prepared if the situation gets any worse. The Peterborough city-county landfill on Bensfort Road was considered as an overfill location for the dead fish when the carp were first found in Lake Scugog, Jackson said. "We have a lot of carp here so we figure what hits Scugog we should at least be aware what's happening and follow it closely," Jackson said. The city would co-operate with the Trent-Severn Waterway to handle any carp die-off, he said. Tests are underway at labs in Guelph and British Columbia to determine the cause of the carp deaths. With 24-hours notice, the landfill would be ready to handle truckloads full of dead fish, said Melanie Kawalec, the city waste management manager. "We dig a hole which is out of the normal tipping area," Kawalec said. "They basically empty the load into the hole and then we cover it up immediately." It's important not to leave the dead fish exposed in the sun and air, she said. "We want to mitigate any of the nuisances. The nuisances could be odour, it could be attracting seagulls to the site," Kawalec said. The dump's normal operating hours and staff should be enough to handle the disposal of dead fish, she said. "We should be able to accommodate the volumes," Kawalec said. "We've got capacity and procedure in place." Earlier this week, the ministry asked residents along Rice Lake and the Trent River to be on the lookout for carp carcasses and to report any to the ministry at 1-800-667-1940.

  23. Hey Steve, you gotta work yourself back into shape pretty quickly for the salmon in four weeks or so. I was in Peterborough on Saturday and did run into your buddy Ron. Action was pretty slow. I didn't see any Brits upriver either. In fact there were hardly anyone fishing or picnicing at the usual spots. The decline is well underway.
  24. Very nice. Enjoy those wonderful times. Kids grow up so fast.
