  1. Put a new one in for the low cost. It's a pain to drain the tank again, so you might as well do it while it's open. However, if it's just a crust, try soaking it in CLR over night. You will be able to tell after that if it's good to use it again.
  2. We didn't try bucktails, but good idea for next time. Hard to put down what works. Really wanted to stick with the plan to go after the big ones and used stoty's advice, but just couldn't get anything to hit. We watched the bigger guide boats to see if they we having any luck, but I didn't see a net come out while watching them. So off to catching smaller ones we went.
  3. Well thanks to all those that replied to my advice request, I was able to start with some ammunition. Went to Deseronto with a buddy for 3 days of fishing, long days! Started trolling some crankbaits first thing Thursday morning in Mohawk Bay. First fish was a pike that inhaled the plug, which took awhile to remove, but the fish seemed good after reviving for a few minutes then swam away after giving me one of those famous tail splashed. Lost the next fish, but my buddy caught a couple of walleye on the crankbait and jig, then caught another pike. Trolled Long Reach with crankbaits, but the fish just wouldn't come out and play. We were looking for some of those big ones, but eventually succumbed to fishing closer to shore with weighted spinners and worms. We caught about 40 walleye the first day, 37 the next and over 20 on the last 1/2 day. There were also the odd sheephead and pike thrown in throughout the stay. This was my first concerted effort on the BOQ and it was amazing. What a fish factory. We did talk to many other anglers and no one was catching any larger fish from what I heard. That was also coming from the tackle store. The fish we caught were up to 3 lbs. I was also amazed that jigs and twister would not work as well as the spinner and worm combo. We saw some of the guides out there and witnessed something that I hope doesn't happen to me to soon. The two customers were whipping out crankbaits, when we heard a yelp, we looked over to see that one of the guys hooked the other in the back with the crankbait. Ouch! However, it looked like they delt with it quickly and were back fishing. I did notice that the guy who hooked the other was actually laughing! I would have thrown him in if he hooked me and started laughing. We were able to find our own spots away from the other boats which made it a little more enjoyable. We have already re-booked for next year and will possibly make another trip there this year. A nice change from the Kawarthas. Thanks to all the guys that shared spots and techniques with me.
  4. I have found it very tough this year on Pigeon Lake. Some days you would think that there are no fish in the lake and I have lived on the lake for 26 years. I have caught a few, but felt too guilty to keep any, so back they went. I have found myself going for panfish, just so I can catch something. Hang in there, it will happen, sooner or later!
  5. I fought hard not to even open this post, but I went back on a promise to myself to avoid this kind of topic. I did not read all the replies and won't. But, I will say I know who not to vote for in the next election. I will also make my wife happy if I don't bring political talk into our home!
  6. Hey Lew The prices have been going up constantly over the last few years. We are now be-grudgingly paying around that price for wood. The one piece of advice is to stack and measure the wood in 4x4x8 stacks to see if you are getting ripped off. I order from two different guys last year. The first guys ripped us off for almost a full face cord and would never return our calls (never use him again, buckhorn area), the second gut brought extra and made up for the first guys. We will use him from now on. I'm starting to sway to Cliff's thinking, but the propane costs scare me off that idea. The first step is talk my wife into the change-she loves the dry heat for her arthritis.
  7. Yes I remember it vividly. Heading up to Bobcaygeon for the Cananda/USA walleye tournament to stay at a friends on Little Silver lake. We received a call late that night indicating that my father-in-laws shop had been hit by the tornado (across the 400 from the race track)he was okay, but my brother-in-law was missing. David was found the next day in one of the factories across the street, sadly that tornado took his life and it deeply effected the family for a long time. We had headed out as soon as we got the call and found it tough to even get into Barrie with all the military, but they were very understanding as soon as we told them about our situation. They let us through with no problems. I remember the green sky as we travelled along Pigeon Lake heading up to Bobcaygeon and commenting on the wierdness of the sky, then the strangest feeling of loss, when the next day was a bluebird sky, wondering how the weather could change so fast after leaving that path of destruction. Both my father-in-law and brother-in-law were in the building when it hit. They were only 10 feet apart, yet such a different outcome. My sister-in-law just started a tribute to David on facebook, so we can remember him every year at this time. We were all lucky that many more people didn't lose their lives after seeing the destruction first hand. I hope I never see it again.
  8. Just saw on another site that someone caught some in Kash. There were pictures to support it also, so there you go. What the heck do I know.
  9. If your tank is caving, it doesn't sound like you have a leak in the gas line anywhere. Yes you are opening the breather/air screw, but is the hole clear. That ethenol is good at plugging tiny holes up.
  10. Try twister tails in 25' of water. Better spots have the deepest water in the lake close by. Trolling with a depth finder is good for locating spots, which you can zero in on with the jig. The water is starting to warm up fast, so it could be a tough bite. Good Luck
  11. Thanks guys!
  12. A good way to lose weight!
  13. Off to Deseronto tomorrow for three days on the BOQ. Any last minute tips would be much appreciated. We have never fished there, so it will be an adventure for sure. Thanks
  14. I haven't heard of any.
  15. We should all be permitted to make our own choices in life. That includes a personal floatation device. Anyone with a head on their shoulders will put a life jacket on in a dangerous situation. There are accidents throughout the year and they are just that, accidents. If someone isn't drowning because they fell out of their boat without a PFD, they will die from heat exhaustion, hitting there head on a rock, hitting another boat at night without any lights, swimming off the back of you boat, etc. I don't want to live in a police state and that is where we're heading if our friend has his way.
  16. They're going to put a whole new law into place for this????? Check out the stats. Again, who's running this country? Fantino should retire. http://www.lifesavingsociety.com/PDF/DrowningFactSheet.pdf It's not even all from boating accidents????
  17. Is Stalin running this country or what?
  18. When there are no pike in the lake! Most of the kawarthas do not have pike, the central ones anyways. So if I see someone throwing a spinner bait in shallows, I assume they are fishing for OOS bass.
  19. For those of you that weren't fortunate to fish lower Pigeon Lake this weekend, you missed the watersport events. The loudest and most obnoxous were three boats that made a whole section their personal race track. I doubt there was a fish for miles that would bite after their run. Yes, everyone has the privileage of using the water, but can't they go in a straight line up the lake then back, while racing rather than constantly doing donuts and tearing up the weeds. Had a buddy out with me and he was completely amazed at the disregard for other boaters and how close they were running around each other at high speeds. I just replied that we would should stay ready to rescue them when they crashed. The most unfortunate thing is that they live on the lake and we will have to endure this until freeze up! I don't think I will fish the kawarthas on the next Victoria Day Long Weekend.
  20. It's decomposition on the face, bacteria gets into the skin and the hair slips off. The face is usually the first place this happens or around other body openings. No whiskers! Probably a muskrat or baby otter.
  21. Try a white twister tail in 10-25' along the bottom. Not the best lake trout lake in my opinion. You should be happy if you catch one.
  22. They are one fish that I would never eat. I have cleaned a few to mount and the flesh doesn't even look appetizing. You have to use metal cutters to get through the skin. I have caught some on tiny twisters while they are sunning themselves in the shallows. Cast the jig out past them, then retieve the jig so it goes close to their eyes, that way when they grab the bait, it's actually going into their mouth.
  23. The best move you could have ever made Lew. I did that 24 years ago at the age of 28. Everyone said there was no way you could move to the country and survive. Yes there were tough times, but I live on the lake and have paid off the house. Life couldn't be better! Reading the replies from some of the other members that say your one of the lucky ones reminds me of all the naysayers. If anyone is desiring to live in the country, just DO IT, life is short. Maybe I shouldn't say that, the population might increase around Lew; Sorry about that!
  24. Hang in there Cliff, the bite will pick up this weekend. I remember pre-fishing years ago for the Canada/US walleye tournament and having trouble locating any fish, then on tournament day (end of May), it was like someone opened the gates to walleye heaven! That was on Sturgeon.
