Awesome, thanks!! Got me a new favourite channel.

Hey all, anybody been to the Bass Pro Shop lately? Saw in the flyer that all Musky hardbaits are 25% off or more. Curious which ones might be more, 40 or 50% off kind of thing. It's Gotta be a serious discount to justify the drive for me. Thanks.

Nice report! And, just for the record, you can never, ever, have too many pike pics!

Live Bait makes it easier. I've been basicallly skunked dozens of times this year fishing with artificials and plastics. Yet I keep trying the stuff. Am I a crappy fisherman? Well yeah, sure I am, but, on the very few times that I use worms I enevitably catch something, and with very little effort or technique. I really enjoy working spinnerbaits, bucktails, spoons and whatever else but I firmly beleive that chucking out a worm, leach, crayfish, or big honking minnow or whatever else is generally alot more likely to catch you some kind of fish; unless you are really familliar with the artificial and even then I'm not totally convinced. . Working an artificial is fun but after being blanked on countless outings actually catching fish is pretty fun too. My two cents.

Well Done! I'm still looking for my first; tried the rouge several times in previous years and figured it was a lost cause. I guess not.

Some amazing scenery/photography there; I love that picture 8th from the top. Looks like an awesome spot for a beer..... In a can naturally....... Which I'd be sure to take out with me.

Wow. I thought you were kidding.

That was an amazing report; making me wish I was there!! -
Allright guys, I want to say thanks for all the replies; I know it's not equipment that alot of folks are familliar with. Sounds like it would definately make for a good trolling set up in the right conditions, I'll keep the metal line but I still want to know if I can spool the remainder of the spool with different line and take a shot at using it as a baitcaster. Tell you what, I will, and I'll let you know how it works out, and then we'll all know! Thanks again, Rossco.

Yeah, welcome, nice first post! Personally I'm pikeless so far this year but hoping to change that real soon!
-
Cool. That looks like quite the chuck! Could I leave the wire line on and use it as backer? There is probably about a half a spool of it on currently.
-
Interesting. Thanks for the responses. I can't imagine fighting any kind of big fish on such a short stiff rod, must be horrible! I may replace that metal line, the concept of of a birdsnest made of metal is really frightening. The idea of trying to cast 200 yards is pretty appealing; what line do you have on there Alex? The reel looks like it has some pretty serious capacity, anybody know how many inches of line retrival it would pull in per turn? I understand that the gear ratio is very low.

Hey Folks, I am hoping to take advantage of your collective knowledge. This afternoon I picked up a second hand rod and reel, both in great shape, but I'm not exactly sure what I've got. The reel is an older Penn 209 levelwind (1993) and the rod is short and metal, maybe 5 foot, has only 2 eyes plus a strange spring like thing at the tip, kind of like a doorstopper. It's a Shakespeare something, part of the lettering is rubbed out but I can make out BWB 1155. The reel is spooled with actual wire (not leadcore) and I have an extra spool of the stuff. Strange stuff. ....So anyways, is this basically just a trolling reel and rod? Should I get rid of the metal line? What's with the crazy spring tip? Does anybody out there use one of these reels as part of an actual casting outfit? Does this reel offer any advantages over my abu C3 (which I am very happy with) or excell in any particular situations? I have a few baitcasters but nothing this large so if anybody has any opinions/advice (good or bad) on this equipment I'd really like to hear it. Thanks, Ross

if you could only have one bait in your box, what would it be?

I've got to cast my lot in with Lew and go with a big spinnerbait. Not even so much because I manage to catch alot of fish with them, more just because I love fishing with them! Pretty weedless, good castability, fish em shallow or deep, fast or slow and the single big hook makes for easy releases. -
Last I checked you needed a second dish for it in the Peterborough area too and that's with Bell Express Vu.
-
Hey Johnny, Is that rod you are referring to the bass pro 6'3'' x-heavy rod? I have the same rod and have aslo tried pairing it with my C3. Man, I hate that rod. It's my back up, might work well as a jerkbait rod but I don't really have any of those. I can't catch a thing with it and have lost a few big fish on it. First time I got a big hit on it I had the drag set rediculously tight and I actually thought I heard it crack but can't see any damage. You seem to be doing pretty well with it though! Thanks for the report.

Right on!! Nice report, cool to see something so different.

I was at Sandbanks about a week ago too and fishing the channel as well but got skunked. I've never seen it so shallow and choked with weeds before, at least that I can remember. I saw a dead pike on the bank so that gave me some encouragement; I'm actually going back tomorrow for a few days so maybe this time I'll try the canoe.

Great report, Its been a while since I was out on Scugog, makes me think I'm due....
-
OK, thanks for all the advice; I went with the perch. Seemed to be the most popular choice and at Canadian Tire it was either that or Bluegill. If I like it maybe down the road I'll pick up a Pearl white one.
-
Hi. Maybe kind of a stupid question but I can only afford one so I'd like to choose wisely first time around. I'll be targetting musky with it in the Kawarthas, casting rather than trolling and generally shore fishing. I realize there may be other/better choices but I'm committed to the purchase as I hear they are pretty decent lures. So anyways, are any colour choices better than others? I'm leaning towards more of a natural type of pattern as I already own a few gaudy lures (firetiger, orange and black, fire perch, etc, etc.) Thanks for any advice you might care to share. Rossco

Nice Fish and nice report. Sounds like a great day despite the knucklehead.
-
You are right GCD, I am talking about a spincasting rod, not a spinning rod.
-
Good day eh. I've had a spare baitcasting reel kicking around for a while and have been too stingy to buy yet another rod. I picked up a tiny 25 dollar 5 foot ugly stik spincasting combo at Walmart this morning, tossed the spincasting reel aside and put my baitcaster on there. It looks like it should be a pretty sweet combo for casting light lures and panfishing, maybe the odd small bass thrown in there. Looks like you could cast with it all day with absolutely no arm fatigue either. Anyone foresee any problems? Actually kind of a nice change from the 7 and a half foot musky rod.
-
Back on the first page of this thread Sharper mentions the Ugly stiks are a good price at bass pro. Anybody know if they are on sale too? Or how much they are regular even? I need an all purpose rod for my backup baitcaster and was thinking of giving the ugly stik a go, I've heard alot of both good and bad about them so I figured I'd see for myself. Thanks.
