  1. Thanks for all the replies. Axe worked pretty well, opened up a few old holes as suggested. I was surprised at the thickness of the ice, looked close to 12 inches. Initially nobody else was out there to irritate; was damn cold.
  2. I'd planned on doing a little ice fishing tomorrow on Chemong most likely; probably close to the causeway where I've seen some huts. I've just noticed that my two piece auger is messed up, the handle is squashed and the 2 pieces won't thread together. I've got a firemans axe, axe blade on one side and pick on the other. Providing the ice is not overly thick (or thin) I should be ok, no? Considering this will be my only outing of the season I don't really want to spring for a new auger. Thanks
  3. I bought one. Can't remember the model, xxh or something. I ended up selling it shortly after; it was just way too much. I found the rod heavy, and the two piece handle did not line up properly. The rod felt really cumbersome. I think your alot better off buying a gently used St. Croix for the same or possibly less cash.
  4. I should have mentioned it was a square backed model.
  5. Thanks for the reply. 6-8mph is actually pretty encouraging considering the size of your boat compared to my canoe. I'm very capable of dock bashing regardless of what I'm piloting. I think it's genetic after watching my pop dock his sailboat. Does that motor do a good job of snaking/chewing it's way through the weeds?
  6. As I recently came into a 14 foot Sportspal I've been looking for a small motor for it. Thought I had a 2hp Johnson lined up but decided to pass on it when it wouldn't start. I've had a few people offer me older gas weedless motors and I don't really know anything about them. I understand that the prop sits at a downward angle rather the typical 90 degrees. My main question is how much speed is lost in favour of weedlessness. Is it worth it? Do they actually work well? Would a canoe and a 3 be able to power through heavily vegetated areas? At the moment I'm considering a late 70's 3hp weedless Evinrude. I'm not looking for the canoe to fly across the lake but I'd like to be able to move with something resembling speed in open water, maybe 12 to 15 km/h. Any thoughts?
  7. Sweet. That's good speed. Thanks for the reply. Curious, 2 or 4 stroke?
  8. Howdy. I figured I'd change things up a bit for 2012 so I swapped my 12foot tin boat for what I thought was a 12 foot square ended (not full transom) sportspal. After doing a few measurements I'm pleased to discover that it's actually a 14 footer(I think)in really good shape. I've lined up an older 2hp Johnson that I can get for a good price and was wondering if anyone had a similar set up? Good combo? I imagine the 2 hp would provide enough juice as I do the majority of my fishing alone but wondering if I should hold out for a 3hp? Any idea on top speed with the 2? I'm attempting to simplify things this year, minimal tackle and just 2 rod.I realize it's not a speedboat. Also, anyone ever add/install webbed seats? I'm not a big fan of the foam seats they come with. Had them in my old 12 foot pointed sportspal(canoe is actually closer to 10)and can't say I really liked them. I'd also kind of like to add a yoke to it, figure it would make carrying it easier, although it's doable over the shoulder. Thanks. Really looking forward to spring, I can think of dozens of rivers, bays and ponds I'm dying to get into, places I could never have got into with my aluminum boat. Cheers
  9. Man, looks pretty sweet down there. Nice read Garry. Should be -16 in Peterborough tonight, -27 with the wind. And colder tomorrow.
  10. Nice report but....no onions?
  11. Circle hooks work great too.
  12. I don't know if it works but I've heard the rubberized rocker guard Canadian Tire sells seals reasonably small leaks. I've been waiting for it to go on sale, it's about 9 bucks a spray can at regular price.
  13. Get the Sportspal. They're great. I picked up a 50 dollar one 4 or 5 years ago. I've now upgraded to a 12 foot aluminum boat and motor but I'd never get rid of the sportspal, despite the leaks, missing ribs and sponsons. You can launch and fish them anywhere.
  14. I appreciate all the info and opinions guys. I've gone ahead and ordered the Avid, 7 foot heavy fast. In many ways a Shimano product would make a lot of sense as I live in Peterborough and the warranty center is here. I think for now I'll stick with their reels.
  15. Yeah, basically,. That's what I was hoping to hear. Versatility and capability. And yes, baitcasting rod. I've seen numerous posts over the years by board members like you, Solopaddler, MoooseBunk, etc, etc. Guys catching loads of BIG pike. I could be wrong but I think alot of the time it is on non-musky gear, like in your case, the MH Avid, or lighter musky gear. So I figure my typical Musky is smaller than your Pike, and from what I understand, Pike typically put up a better fight pound per pound. So providing I stay with smaller lures like you suggest; I figure I should be ok too.
  16. Roy, it's more about getting rid of the Bling. Get rid of multiple rods, reels and oversized baits and get a single rod that works well. Besides, who needs bling when you've got a 25 year old 12 foot tinner and a 35 year old 6 Hp bundle of fury to wow the world with?
  17. Yeah, I can see what you are saying. It's just that I've had a variety of species specific Musky rods over the past few years, a medium, a medium heavy, an x heavy and an xxxh and with the exception of the Medium they all seemed like overkill. Although I understand the argument that you want to be prepared for that fish of a lifetime. I just figure that a quality 7 foot heavy baitcaster offers a lot more versatility and if equiped with heavy braid and leader should handle pretty much any musky I'm likely to hook into.
  18. I can't stand split grips. All crucials have them, no?
  19. I know that it will a trade off somewhere; MH would probably be better for certain Bass Applications, Heavy better for Musky fishing. I've always been surprised how many frog rods have a heavy rating; even extra heavy sometimes.
  20. I'm thinking about making the plunge and buying my first new "high end" rod. Hopefully it will also be my last. I've been selling off the majority of my rods in the hopes of going with just a two rod system. I've got a 7 foot ML premier spinning rod; she is a thing of beauty, a great rod for very small to medium small lures, spinners, jigs etc. I use it for all my panfishing and tossing senkos for bass. Now, I'd like the second rod (almost certainly the 7 foot, heavy , fast Avid) to be able to work all my larger Bass lures, frogs, spinnerbaits etc, etc. I also hoping it can do double duty as a light Musky rod. The majority of Musky I catch are on the smaller side, and I plan on selling off my larger musky baits and downsizing to smaller musky baits that are more appropriate for the rod rating. 3/8th to 1 1/2 ounces. In my limited experience the heavier True Musky rods are really only required when you want to throw big baits rather than a necessity for pulling in the average Musky. I understand the importance of quickly bringing in a fish rather than playing it out. I've owned Medium Heavy Rods (Bass Rods) before that felt a tad light for Musky; I'm thinking the Heavy Avid might be just about right. Any thoughts? I could save a few dollars going with the 7 foot heavy Premier; Avid worth the difference in price? Lifetime warranty on the Avid I believe.
  21. Interesting. You can get that Trilene in 400 pound test apparently. Probably never lose a lure again. Or catch a fish.
  22. Nice report and a great advertisement for Rapala too!
  23. I've got a 76 6hp johnson; colour scheme sounds the same, more or less.
  24. I'm no pro but I'm pretty sure they work fine for wacky rigging.
  25. There are always a ton of good rods in the classified section. If you've got 100 bucks to spend on a rod, once you take taxes into account; you are getting a 90 dollar rod at best. Or you could buy a sweet used stick worth 200. How much is a compre anyway, once you add in taxes? Maybe 130, 140? Hardly qualifies as being in a 100 dollar class bracket.
