Picked up boat and ran like a champ on big lake o! I am satisfied with the service overall.. He went through everything with me and even showed me the "bad" parts. They are professional, that I will give them. they also checked and adjusted things that I did not mention.. small items, but nevertheless, they were done. So, I feel better about it now and I am sure that the motor is going to work wonderfully for me from now on. He said the compression was excellent, among other things. there's a bunch of stuff on the invoice "report" and I will dig it up and post anyhting I have questions about. Thanks folks for all the input!

Just looked at Cliff's Seafoam link. Wow, looks great! Maybe I should invest in the stuff? I want to take some preventative measures. Question is which product(s) to go with? There a re several. The first one on the site looks like the gas additive. Any thoughts?
-
Cliff, should I get it a Cdn Tire? In your opinion, what "preventitive" measure can I take (other than the Seaform). For example, should I use synthetic oil, premium gas, etc... Also, I have changed the lower unit oil, the plugs and usually the fuel filter , too, every year on previously owned motors. These are the only things I have done without the assistance of a mechanic! Anything else? Thanks!!

Toronto has 7 "Blue Flag" Beaches.. Look it up. Lake Ontario is fine to swim in.. save for a few spots after a rainfall... then again Huron, erie and even Geo Bay have restrictions after rainfalls in some spots..

I am not knocking the mechanic... I realize he's probably making pittance... It's the owner of the business that is "ripping" me off...
-
Where did you take the course? thanks
-
That makes me feel a whole lot better! I don't know what to say at this point.. I haven't picked it up yet. Maybe I should try to get the price down.. i think it's too late though!

The thing is, I wouldn't have been able to "diagnose" the issues with the motor... So, either way, he would have charged me a $100 just to look at it... perhaps I should have taken it home instead of leaving it there. I swear I will not take it to a mechanic again. I am determined to figure this stuff out on my own in the future... On a "side note" Klaus just sent me an email. This is what he said: We found that the engine’s charging system isn’t working. You have two options: Install a new stator under the flywheel. This will cost you $421.03 Make sure the extra battery you have is fully charged and good to go.

And is it possible that the job took 4+ hours???

Thanks guys.. like I said previously, I am a mechanical idiot. I need to learn what the purpose of these parts is.. I am going to locate a manual then educate myself via the web. I am so mad that I had to spend $500... especially since I don't have a lot of money. ;(

I am not mechanically inclined... i don't even know what these things do... I will admit, I am an idiot when it comes to this stuff. Guys like me end up getting ripped off, I guess... I would like to learn...

Fuel stabilizer eh? I thought that was for fuel that sits over the winter?

Boy, was that a kick in the ass... just got the quote on my motor "repair" for my 70 HP 1982 Evinrunde gonna cost me well over $500 with tax. Klaus Marine said the top carb was "gummed up" (dirty, old fuel?) and the cylinder head gasket needed replacement. Probably $80 parts. I need to buy a manual and learn how to do this stuff myself. I just find it intimidating... but $500 is more intimidating. I only paid $1900 for the entire boat package. Damn!

Discount? I bought a boat off them in the 90'. lets just say I will NEVER go near that place again. One story I will share: I got stuck on Nippissing in at 830 pm. while walleye fishing two weeks after i bought it. Was charged $300+ by OPP (tow to shore) and a ruined weekend.. we didn't get back to shore until 4 am. Had to to us to North Bay and we were staying at Sunset.. Reason? The mechanic "accidentally" cut/damaged some wires when installing the controls for the kicker.. You'd think he would compensate me for a lost weekend eh? We had rented a nice cottage and spent toms of money.. boat wasn't fixed for another week... we had to rent a boat the rest of the weekend. I should have taken them to court. I better stop now cause my blood still boils There needs to be more accountability in that industry in general

I sent it to Klaus yesterday - in Etobicoke. Thanks for the suggestions! Regards

So what did you end up doing with the mounting job? I am curious b/c it seems that you and i have very similar scenarios! I also have a 16' aluminum and the same manual cannons. Questions for the chap who mentioned the backing plate beneath the gunwale. I am assuming this is for strength/support. What material would you use? Are you simply cutting out a piece that is roughly the same size as the factory mounting plate? How do you mount it (beneath the gunwale)? Are you drilling the plate into the piece of material? Thanks!

Bluffers guys are also crooks.. like lots of the mechanics out there. I don't want to go there... got burned by those people in the 1990's

and it starts really easy and revs up...just doesn't "go" on the lake..
-
I got it for a very good price.

Hi folks, Would like a recommendation to a good, honest marine mechanic in the GTA. Just bought a boat and need to have the engine looked at. I live near BPS but don't mind driving a little further if need be. Seller says it bogs down if trying to rev the engine in gear. Doesn't seem to have the power to take off. Have no idea what the problem is as I am not mechanically inclined. Thanks!

I paid 475 and it runs fantastic... I would not pay 800
