Hey gang, We had it on good authority that our brookie lake would be ice free this past weekend so we got some good pals together, loaded the Jon boats and made the drive north to freedom!! My canoe is up at my folks place and I wasn't too keen on fishing from the boats so I brought my tube.. Turns out it was a good call. I went 5 for 5 long lining a mepps #2 (black hackle) tipped with a worm. I think being stealthy made all the difference.. I was able to keep my bait in the zone all while keeping a low profile.. I was rewarded with some absolutely gorgeous specks!! My vessel. The yarest river-going boat there be!! This one sure was purdy.. One last look... I went in with the good intention of releasing all my fish.. But the wifey had made me promiss to bring some fish home so I kept the last 2 of the day.. I was thinking that I might do just as good on the Sunday so I wasn't too concerned.. Went back for another round and got ZIP! Go figure, eh?! Next year I'm bringing the fly rod.. cheers, HD

Got some chrome to go with those bad boys bawd?! -
There's really a host of issues but number one in my opinion is the guaranteed calf tag.. I hunt in WMU 40, one of the most heavily hunted units in Ontario if not THE most hunted.. There's no way the moose populations could keep up with this... Coupled with poor recruitment, more predators, it was only a matter of time before the population would crash. It's a drastic move but it's needed. Let's just hope the population can recover. I'd love to see more moose on the Montreal River in a few years..

Whoah.. Just googled Dick Swan and came up one of your threads from 2009! How times fly... http://ontariofishingcommunity.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=30977

Well the article on the OOD mag was quite a few years ago... not sure of the date but it was about Dick and there was a picture of him standing behind that very same Dam!
-
I actually met Mr. Swan when I was a teenager at one of the Sportsman's shows.. He had his own booth and some very nice noodle rods on display.. I had never caught a steelhead (I lived in Northern Ontario) but I remember speaking with him and since then, every time I saw a dam that resembled it, I thought back to that one article. Weird how the mind works.. That last pic from your write-up literally jumped out and hit me in the face!! Nice guy that Mr. Swan.. He actually passed away this year.. May he rest in peace. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/themorningsun/obituary.aspx?pid=174221110

Lake O is zone 20. Toronto Harbour is part of zone 20, same for Oshawa Harbor and Whitby Harbor. Pike are closed until the first saturday in May.
-
That's weird.. I thought pike were closed until second week of May..
