  1. 5W-30 anyway even if it is going to be stored inside. If you are going to keep a can of gas standing by or fuel in the generator, make sure you use a good quality stabilizer in the fuel. Gas containing ethanol starts to break down after as little as 4 weeks. Apart from that little maintanance should be necessary!
  2. Walleye bite all day long as do most fish. The biggest problem is that we become so programed to fishing spots and techniques that we get programmed to that we don't change our tactics or spots often enough. Here is an example for you: I was fishing with two other friends, in the middle of the day. We had started out in the morning drifting and were catching some nice fish but then the bite stopped. After a bit I got snagged and lost my trustiest lure. I didn't have anything close to it in my box so I decided to play around for a bit, fish weren't biting anyway. I built a worm harness sort of thing out of bits and pieces, some beads and blades. It was sort of a strange looking thing, pink, chartruse, blue, red. My two friends actually laughed at me and called it "Cliffie's Christmas Tree". Well, I landed 11 nice walleye they landed 3 between them. They didn't laugh so hard after that LOL. Another time, fishing up near Elliot Lake; I had been told there were Rainbow trout in this small lake but they were really hard to catch. we tried several times but weren't having much luck. I finally rigged up a small silver Cleo (took the trebble hook off the Cleo and made a stinger hook about 3" behind the Cleo, tipped it with a worm and trolled it behind our canoe. We were catching rainbows in the morning, middle of the day, the evening. In fact we could go out and catch a nice feed of fish any time we wanted while others tried everything else you could imagine and their results were not good. Sometimes just the slightest change of presentation place speed...... can mean the differance between being skunked and limiting out. Even fishing this lake has presented some challanges for me, there is a lot of water to cover, most of my experience has been fishing fast water, this lake tends to be shallow and slow moving. I am use to fishing rocks and structure, this lake presents a lot of weeds. Do I still catch fish? Sure I do but my success is still limited. Yes, I can go out most evenings and put 4 or 5 nice walleye in the boat in an hour or so but that window of time is limited, too early nothing, too late, nothing! I could spend hours trying to type everything here but that would cut into my exploring time so I'll leave you to do some of your own but: GET OUT THERE AND FISH!!!!! cause you won't catch any sitting here complaining about how bad the fishing is!
  3. Welcome to the board Marc. Check your PMs.
  4. No, it isn't winterized but the price is good and it is a nice piece of property, besides it comes with a neighbour who knows the lake and where and how to fish it, can fix most anything and knows where to find what he can't fix LOL. Actually, houses on both sides of it are assessed at about double what they are asking for this so I think it will go quickly.
  5. My neighbour two doors over just told me he is going to be selling his cottage here on Sturgeon lake and I seem to remember a while back someone looking for one up this way. PM me if you are interested, it should be going on the market in the next few days.
  6. Thanks gang, all is good, hydro came back on just as I pulled in the drive way from work. Talked to my insurance company, they said "No Problem" anything over your deductable, we'll cover. Deductable is $1000.00 so I guess I'm going to be out of pocket for that much but........ Last night a local young lad had come by and said if he could have the wood he he would clean up all but the brush which the city will do. By dark he had two truck loads gone and said he would be back to finish it by tonight. Now I have to get a carpenter in to see about fixing the roof, shouldn't be too big a job. Neighbour on one side of me does fences for a living, neighbour on the other side does siding and eves troughing. MY boss at work gave me a fantastic deal on a 6500W generator which will be plenty to run my whole house if we ever have another power failure and an Electrican friend said he will hook everything up for the cost of materials (about $300.00) we'll never be caught without power again. My little 1000W portable did a fantastic job but just wasn't big enough to run my water pump and fridges. When life hands you a bowl full of lemons.....make lemonaid.
  7. Dave is a true OFNr, not just some wantabe
  8. Thank you all for the PM's and phone calls with offers to help. I am posting here because I have to leave for work and don't have time to answer them all via PM. So far we are doing fine, our little generator has kept us in lights and enough power to run the computer and TV, we have lots of bottled water for drinking and a lake full of water for flushing etc.. I haven'tt seen the Hydro crews yet, I can't do much about the tree that is down until they come, it is leaning across the wires and has already broken two poles, I think I'll let them deal with it and I'll just clean up what ever they leave behind. Hopfully we'll have hydro back on by tonight but if not, I'll be bringing a bigger generator home from work so that I can run my freezers and such. Thanks again everyone, I'll keep you posted and hopfully have some pictures by this evening. Oh and Sinker, your sone can come fish off my dock anytime anyway. in the last two weeks the kids have caught a (approx) 14lb muskie, a 4 lb LM and about a 12" crappie (amoung other things).
  9. My place is a mess, a huge tree came down and damaged my garage, fence, and took out a couple of hydro poles. We don't have any power so no running water but we have bottled water for drinking, have filled up the tub for flushing toilets, and have oir little generator to run our computer, TV, and a few Lights. We are OK and that is all that matters! I pray everyone else made out as well as we have! If you had a boat at the Mourings Marina, you mught want to check on it, they had a lot of damage.
  10. Boy, that is a good site, according to it, I should be using a 14 pitch prop. I'll see what the dealer sends me!
  11. Wow, thank you for all the replies and information, I think I am going to look into a set of the tabs. I also had a talk with the marina today and they checked and apparently that isn't the best prop for my package, they are sending me one (free) with an apology, that they say should solve most of my issues other than the trolling speed. With the current prop I am pushing the RPM limit for my package and would actually exceed the max rated RPMs if I were to hold the throttle wide open. I should have the new prop here for the weekend, I'll let you know how that works. In the mean time it looks like I have pleanty of reading to do!
  12. OK, I have a 60 hp Mercury The numbers on the prop are 73136A40?13 the ? could be a B or a P (or something else but it is painted in) The boat doesn't seem to get up on plane as fast as I think it should and at WOT my RPMs are really pushing the limit. Top end speed isn't as much of a concern to me as lower end. I would like to acheive less speed for trolling (currently about 2.3 mph) and quicker jump up on plane. Is this the right prop for what I want to do? The boat is rated for a 75 but the dealer "ASSURED ME" that the 60 was plenty of power for this package!
  13. As always a wonderful post and spectacular photos! Glad to hear you are back safe and sound and looking forward to seeing you guys soon.
  14. Excellent idea!
  15. I have an Aqua-View and used it last year to help me learn more about walleye habits. I found it VERY useful and intend to use it again this year. Instead of just using it the way it is intended, I rigged mine so that it points straight down so I can suspend it above bottom and actually see fish coming in and their reaction to my baits. It also allowed me to figure out that the walleye were migrating through the spot I was fishing and exiting which explayned the fact that the bite would turn on and then back off again. they came, they ate, they left. By moving in the direction that they left in, I could continue to catch fish. I haven't had a chance to install it in the new boat yet but you can be sure I will soon. If there is a lot of silt in the water your range is reduced but I am usually fihing in about 8-12' of water, I can often clearly see about 10'; far enough away that it doesn't spook the fish but helps me learn about what works and what doesn't. BUT! Each to their own!
  16. Just buy one jack, with your luck it's all you'll need! Glad to hear everything worked out well for you!
  17. ASSUMING they are connected in parallel (+ on one to + on the other, and - on one to - on the other), connect your charger + lead to the + post on one battery and the - lead of the charger to the - of the same battery. it will charge both batteries for you. Connect your charger leads first, then plug in your charger. If the batteries are connected in series (- on one battery to + on the other) you need more help! Let me know!
  18. Knowing Roy the way I do it can be the other way around as long as he has plenty of both! All the very best to you my friend!
  19. I was very impressed with Marc's set up when I saw it but had been advised by a very trusted sourse that the HDS units still had some bugs. It seems though that they have sorted them out. Sinker, you know you are welcome any time!!!! LOL, No CPH, Andy was still all warm and cozy in bed with Mom.
  20. I spent most of yesterday working but finally got a chance to install the new electronics on the boat, I had a lot of help from the whole gang here and after a LOT of research and talking to Lowrance Tech support several times and being assured that they had sorted out the bugs, decided to go with the HDS 5. Boy am I impressed! I got it all hooked up yesterday and then Peter came over and checked it out for me and gave me a few pointers. I didn't get a chance to do any fishing last night but we did go across the lake for dinner with some friends and I couldn't believe the detail. So, bright and early this morning I decided it is time to get out there and see what this thing can do, I have never seen anything like it, fast, clear, incredable detail and to top it all off I'm out there 5 minutes and land my first walleye in the new boat, then along comes Peter with a Tim's coffee and a bluberry muffin for me, now this guy knows how to impress someone, he even rememberd exactly how I like it! First time I've ever had a Tim's delivered to me out on the water Thank you once again Peter! We kind of went our own seperate ways for a bit, I brought one small muskie to the boat and managed to release it at boat side, had another one on for a couple of minutes then it spit the hook and lost one more small walleye. Not bad for an hour and a half fishing. (a lot of which was spent fooling around with the new equipment) Anyway, it was really nice to see Peter again and with any luck at all we are going to try to get out and catch some fish tomorrow evening.
  21. You can bet that if it was the other way around he wouldn't be posting it on this board LOL!
  22. I have a new Lowrence X 52 fish finder c/w transducer never been used (came with the boat) I will sell it for $150.00 (before someone PMs me and tells me to put it in the clasifieds, I will but @ $175.00 which is still a good deal) Just wanted to give OFNr's first crack and a special deal.
  23. All I can say is God bless you all! I don't pray very often but I'll be saying a special one tonight. I have seen first hand the miricales that are preformed at Sick Kids, May this be another one!
  24. Sorry I didn't see this post sooner. PM sent.
  25. I tried a can about a year ago, I now buy it by the case. It won't cure everything but it sure does clear up a lot of problems.
