  1. I am not super familiar with Garmin so I am unsure of its features. I am sure they are great units.

The new Birds which are the Helix models have autochart live right out of the box. 8 hours of free live mapping before you have to buy another card for more mapping. This comes with the Helix 9,10, and 12 models that have GPS obviously.

Lowrance has insight genisis which you still have to upload to a website and then download it to a blank SD card. You can keep your content private or public with particular types of subscriptions.

If you want live mapping the Birds seem to be have the edge there. But The Garmin could be just as good.

Garmin is free and you don't have to upload anything. ;)

They say you can store 1700 hours of mapping from the regular (non-imaging) transducer on a 2GB card.

Should be able to get a lifetime on a 32 gig one. :)

  2. I just purchased one of these to replace my older Lowrance unit.

My biggest need in a new unit was the map making ability. While Lowrance and Hummingbird both offerthe ability to make your own maps, this is the only manufacturer that does it real time.

They are also less expensive than units sold by the other two manufacturers and there are more units that can make maps.

The issues I have been hearing about with Lowrance's customer service is what steered me away from them.

  3. I also have a propane forced air unit in my place here in Yellowknife.

    Yes, they are quite loud.

Mine also clicks when it fires up.

There is also a fan in the vent stack that works with the pressure switch.

These fans tend to crap out after a while as well. They let the system know if the flue is blocked.

They won't fire if it is blocked so the house doesn't fill with CO.

  4. GEEZE!!!!

You guys will complain about anything!!!!

Yesterday the ENR came and trapped my pet wolverine and relocated it out of town!!!

They kidnapped my buddy just because he walked into a school yard last week. :dunno: :dunno:

I'm gonna miss the little guy.

  5. I always found that braid froze up on me and gave me problems if outside in the elements.

I found the same so I went to a coated braid and it's very similar to mono in the way it sheds water.

The stuff I use is Tuf-Line Supercast. Used to be called Duracast.

It's not ice specific so it comes in bigger spools which is nice.

I use flouro leaders on my braid.

Flouro line is terrible in the winter. It gets really stiff and coily.

  6. I know it's Alaska but did you catch the fact that someone was actually ice fishing on Nov 14th I cut my grass that weekend.

plus is that a zamboni to the right?

    Not Alaska. ;)

It's quite normal for us to have fishable ice here in Yellowknife by the beginning of November.

Up North where this was caught they are on the ice in October. ;)

  7. Ice is one thing for poor traction.... Water covered smooth tile floors from melting slush in malls and stores to me are about 3 to 5 times more slippery. This is just a personal observation from delivering to malls and restaurants 6 days a week for 14 yrs.

The worst part I found was boot or shoes that offer great traction on ice or snow covered ice for that matter were totally useless once you enter an establishment with tiled floors that have no texture. Those Mark work tarantula were the worst for me.

Just as bad though was I couldn't ever find a shoe or boot that was slip resistant indoors for slippery restaurant floors that worked well outside on ice and snow covered ice....

Can't wait to see the data when they test for slush covered floors LOL.

The problem with restaurant floors is no matter how clean it looks it has a thin film of oil/grease from cooking with the fryers.

Any kind of moisture on your shoes or the floor and it's like having Teflon soled shoes on at the rink!!!
