It is not considered safe, nor legal. Likelihood of being caught, next to nil unless something goes wrong. Just as illegal as pumping gas in a bleach bottle.
After doing the shoulder to shoulder thing It is a lot nicer jigging for them. No bumping, jostling or fists. No CROWD. It's a real hoot getting them to the bucket before they can wriggle off the hook.
Why cook, of course.
Heavy rain and blowing wind makes for horrible fishing let alone anything else outdoors. Sitting in front of the VDT all day is just wrong. So I spent most of the day in the kitchen Time for some old fashioned goodness.
Now my family does consist of picky eaters. That means I have to modify recipes to suit the peanut gallery. They want to smother everything in ketchup
part 1, bread. They don't like molasses so we substitute and make honey oatmeal bread.
For dinner I wanted a treat. The tree huggers can have their soy(lent) and greens Tonight we were having quail. Slow cooked and stuffed with fresh fruit to sweeten and tenderize the little darlings to mouth watering perfection . Mmmm Mmm!
The sweet gravy was a perfect topping for the baked turnip.
Try not to drool too much on your keyboards folks.
I remember the spring runs along the Huron shore and the St Mary's. Every available Holsteiner from Sudbury to the Sault would be on crowd control along the shoreline. Used to be some narsty brawls over who got what stretch of shoreline.
Back as a boy. TV was for winter time. Too much going on outside in the summer with fishing, swimming. exploring, building forts, catching tadpoles, torturing frogs, etc......
A time when girls played house and boys played........WAR.
Sorry to hear the Mrs health isn't doing well with our climate. You will simply have to join the flock of snowbirds (I know, easier said than done!)
I would find all that air traffic annoying for about 2 weeks, then it becomes background noise.
I hear you Steve. Today was just a teaser, but while I was there the holes were getting wider and wider and the ice softer and softer. Besides i need a few days to get the kitchen ready
Head removed and gutted rolled in a dry mix or batter. 30 seconds to cook in hot oil. Now if you were getting the big coastal smelts from the maritimes, about a minute to cook.
No limit on smelts and can be netted in springtime.
Small micro tear drops; plain, tipped with maggots, waxies, eyeballs, red and pink yarns. Depending on the day, they range bottom to just below the hole. Today the bottom was where the bite was.
Despite the rain we tested one of the ice holes. Results were a little disappointing. We found 4" of ice before the rain started, but the ice was deteriorating quickly with the heavy rains. By tomorrow evening it would not be safe.
Smellts are a lot smaller this year compared to last. Even so, managed enough to give the fryer a workout.
We will need cold weather before that ice is again good to go.
