I am no battery expert, but I wouldn't run the trolling motor from the engine start battery. Cranking batteries are for providing a big burst all at once to start the engine. Deep cycle batteries are set-up different to run for more prolonged periods of time with constant changes in requirements, i.e. variable speed trolling motors. As I said, I am not an expert, but I would go with a 31 series deep cycle with a minimum 200 minute reserve. I have 2 for my 24V motor and have never, ever, run out of juice, or even run them half way down after a full 10 hour day. One should do the same thing for you. By the way, congrats on the boat - seems like a sweet deal - care to share where you picked it up? It should move pretty well with that 30.

I am currently replacing the transom in my aluminum. I will be using marine grade plywood. To me the extra cost is worth it over PT. I would suggest water-proofing with a coat of 2 part epoxy, especially on the edges. If you are putting screws in, coat them with 3M 4200 or 5200 before turning them in. No sense in letting water into your newly water proofed floor. Marine grade ply with epoxy should last a lifetime. If you want to use PT, I would think that any corrosive reaction with the carpet or aluminum would be negated with a good coat or two of the epoxy as well. It doesn't let any moisture in or out, so it may act as a seal - maybe someone can confirm? Good luck with it.

We are looking at a place on Chemong Lake.

We will be selling our house in the near future and are debating between buying a place on the water or staying in town. Our preference would be to live on the water but it's difficult to rationalize spending a lot of money for the house on the water relative to the size and quality of the home you can get in town for the same price. We are not sure we want to pay so much money for an average house simply because it's on the water. It's also hard to anticipate whether waterfront prices will start to stabilize or continue to keep going up which would mean we do it now or never. Any advice?

My bad, I meant the dam in Buckhorn

Is this board slow to load in the last month or is it me?

Honestly, do we really need another thread about this? Personally, I have not noticed any difference. If there is any lasting issues causing this I'm sure they are being worked on. -
I have fins on my OB too and like the performance, although I haven't seen many 9.9's with them. Glad you like. Too bad about the lack of crappie. I haven't fished Scugog, but if it's like the other Kawartha Lakes have been the last couple of years, the crappie bite will be on in another week or 2, maybe a little longer with the cold snap we got. I have found that hitting the small bays in shallower water has paid dividends. Water temp 3-5 degrees higher than the main lake is what to look for.

You can always try the charts put out by Fisheries and Oceans Canada. You need Map 2023. I would be very careful with the I/O when venturing off the channel. The 14'ers will be fine. As far as a fish report goes - you may be a couple of weeks late, as you suggest, but Walleye routinely come up to the dam at Bridgenorth in the evenings to feed, just not as in many numbers as earlier in the season. Three Castles is a good place. Nothing fancy, but has all amenities and a nice launch. You can fish righ out front in the fast flowing water for walleye, and closer to the dam as I mentioned above, for the same. Right off to the left on the resort property is a "waterfall" type thing that flows from Upper Buckhorn down around the dam. It creates a nice wash and current. I fished off shore when a friend stayed there and pulled in some nice slabs off some larger rocks directly in front of the falls, where current was created. They were holed-up behind the rocks in the shadow of the current. I got snagged lots, but also pulled in a couple 12's and 13's from behind there, bite was best early in the a.m. Crappies are either on or off. Hopefully they will be on when you are there. If you find something that works, stick with it. I always had the best luck with small tubes in pumkinseed. Good luck.

I assume we are talking more than recreational fishing (i.e all natural resources) here. What impacts commercial fishermen in NF and BC is much different than would impact Ontario recreational and commercial fishermen. I can see the Fed's running things and the mandate going regional. If it's in the best interests of each regional area, I would like to see how the Fed's would improve/change things for the better.

My sister and brother-in-law were set to buy one, then took it to a reputable mechanic. Stay far, far away. Attractive vehicle on the outside, but inside, where it counts, they are nothing but a headache.

Generally GST does not apply on the sale/purchase of a business as long as both parties elect for it not to apply. See also: http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/gp/rc4022/r...ml#P2175_208277 The rules get quite complex. I recommend a competent tax advisor, preferably a Chartered Accountant, to advise on the specifics of the situation. Unfortunately, it is not a simple yes or no, many variables involved.

I have a Magellan Explorist 500 GPS unit. I am looking to buy the BlueNav software that covers the Kawarthas area, namely Chemong, Pigeon, Buckhorn, Lovesick, Stoney, Otonabee River, Rice Lake etc. I will be downloading the software from their web-site and want to make sure I purchase the correct software. There are 2 possibilities that I see: 1) Lake Ontario East - Cape Vincent and Belleville to Watkins Glen and Ithaca including Oneida Lake 2) Trent Severn Waterway - Prinyer Cove to Port Severn, including Lake Simcoe Does anyone have a Magellan unit that has purchased the software, and what one do I need? Unfortunately, they don't have a great deal of information on what lakes are included on each set of software. Thanks.

Removal costs big, big dollars from what I have heard. As Terry suggests, get an estimate for removal and adjust the offer as appropriate.

Great haul. Hope you had a nice fry!

Water is down 6"-8" on Chemong compareed to "normal" levels. Too bad you found out the hard way. Hope it's a cheap, quick fix.

The winch/mast should be placed so that no more than 10% of the weight on the trailer is on the tongue. Can that be properly estimated by how far the end of the boat overhangs the bunks? Probably not the best way to judge, IMO. I agree with Nanuk - 100%. Good luck with it.

I do not keep bass, only because I do not prefer the taste. I have not tried them in a long time, though. Maybe will give them another shot this year. Thing is, here in the Kawarthas, the water is generally shallow, weedy and warm. Not the best combo for tasty bass. I prefer the taste and texture of crappie and perch, even to that of the almighty walleye. I haven't caught an eater size walleye in the last two seasons on any Kawartha Lakes, probably beacuse I haven't targeted them.

If you can somehow get a map of the lake I can let you know where we found fish via PM. Might narrow things down a bit. I know the owners gave out paper copies when we were there, maye they can fax/e-mail one. Be nice to get the young-lad a nice walleye. Hope you have a great time.

Welcome! Tell us a bit more about yourself, what you like to fish for, how often you get out...

They probably feel more pain when you start to filet them.... Very informative post there, Rick, thanks!

A friend and I went about 4 years ago. I think the place is under new management/owners now, not that that will matter. We were only there 3 days in mid-August, not the best walleye fishing time, and it took a couple days to figure out the lake. Caught 3 walleye total, 2 on the last night, after we figured out the lake. Caught a lot of nice sized perch and some half-decent bronze-backs. It is actually 2 lakes combined, OPC and OPC boys, lots of water to fish. Depths vary greatly. Trick seemed to be bottom bouncing live minnows in 10-14 fow near rock points and shoals just before and at dusk. Walleye were hard to find during the day, got 1, but it was a loner, no schools around. Needed quite a bit of weight to stay on bottom and needed to back troll to get the right presentation. A lot of perch were caught back-trolling the weed lines in 6-8 fow with worm harnesses and power grubs. Also caught a bunch of small (1# or so) smallmouth in about 35 fow off an island. We were hoping for bigger from that spot, but it didn't materialize. There are pike in the lakes, but we didn't hook into one. Facilities are good, nice sand beach if you are going with family. Depending on when you are going, there is a small river/stream that runs into the back part of OPC boys lake over a rock/rip-rap chute. The time of year we were at it was barely a trickle. In the spring/early summer I can see that place being a real hot spot for walleye, holding in the wash waiting for food to come down over, just needs some current. Good cover (some stumps) and rocks, weeds nearby there. Should have held fish, but we tried in vain all 3 days and nothing. Thing with that lake seemed to be if the fish aren't there, move immediately as they won't be there at all. Once you find a pattern that works, it seemed to contniue to work. All-in-all a good trip.

Sweet report, thanks for sharing those pics!

The proof is in the feedback of the seller. Make sure you check it out and ask questions if you are not sure about the product. Read the listing and seller's terms very carefully. I have had 99.8% good experience both buying and selling, due to careful research.

Great first post....welcome to the board!
