  2. Pretty sure that I did something like that when I was a kid, probably most of us have, just playing around. Don't remember having success, but I might try it again when the opportunity arises.
  3. Anyone ever try this before? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G8XGFTxFDE
  4. Typical fisherman, a shameless liar. Listen buddy, women like that are impossible to find. Believe me, many of us have tried.
  5. It's quite possible that the authorities turned up in answer to the complaint long after the fish were taken back to wherever they were being cooked, in which case being gutted would be expected.
  6. It's a Moth, but not a Tiger. de Havilland built the basic Moth first, and there were various models following, with the Tiger Moth being the best known and most widely used. Can't tell from that pic which model that is exactly, the interplane strut on the port wing (can't see the starboard one) has a horizontal brace that wasn't fitted to the Moth as far as I know, unless that's a minor modification for greater strength. I suspect it's the original DH.60 Moth, the progenitor of the breed. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Havilland_DH.60_Moth And from an old soldier to an old airman, a big salute to your uncle.
  7. Reminds me of this oldie but goodie: Heaven is where the Police are British, the Chefs are French, the Mechanics are German, the Lovers Italian and it's all organised by the Swiss. Hell is where the Chefs are British, the mechanics are French, the lovers are Swiss, the Police are German and it's all organised by the Italians.
  8. If he kept his receipt for the fish then this sounds like a case of the police being a bunch of officious nitpickers. If he didn't then even inspecting the 'catch' and finding out that they had been gutted should have put the matter to rest. Or couldn't they have gone to the supermarket and asked if they remembered him? He was just having a little fun with his kids, this sounds like an overbearing application of the law. I hope he gets off, and I hope his children are smart enough to understand that he was just having a joke on them.
  9. They make look flimsy, but they are actually pretty tough. The fabric covering means that they can be stressed without fatiguing metal, and when it gets old you just sew a new skin on. There are plenty still flying, a testament to the people who designed and made them.
  10. Thanks for all the kind comments folks, it's really heartwarming to be able to share something like this. Not sure if you read the comments below the video, but Audrey is my sister's name. She lives in England, but it was like having her with us, and it brought a tear to our eyes. As a side note, the pilot, Dave Hadfield, is the brother of Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield.
  11. Excuse #1 Hey, I just got a call today from the fishing show I went to, I won a door prize! Excuse #2 I just went to the tackle shop and they said I was the millionth customer to walk in, so they let me have all this stuff! Excuse #3 Sheesh, you wouldn't believe the crap people are leaving down by the creek!
  12. Only one. He was doing a circuit and all of a sudden an aircraft appeared from the opposite direction, travelling like a bat out of hell. It zipped by him rather close and he was shocked to see that it had no propeller. He informed his superiors on landing, and was told that he didn't see anything, and he was not to tell anyone that he didn't see anything. What he had actually encountered was the first British jet powered aircraft, the Gloster E28/39:
  13. After struggling for a few years to convert the original 8mm videocam files into something the computer would recognize, I've finally managed to put together a video of the flight my father took in 2008. I may tweak this a bit someday, but here it is for your viewing pleasure.
  14. I live very near there, and I can tell you that the area in question is accessible for shore fishing if you walk around the fence. It means that you need to wade through the water, but there are benefits. Not long after doing so you will be treated to a free ride in a nice vehicle, whereupon after answering a few simple questions you may be treated to an all-expenses-paid few nights in an rather exclusive hotel, with round-the-clock security for your safety. If you play your cards right you may even be allowed to extend your vacation, and you won't be bothered by annoying friends and family.
  15. Here's the 180lb loudmouth bass that my daughter caught a couple of years ago. Unhooked it at Soldiers Memorial in Orillia.
  16. Beautiful shots! The bottom one is a semipalmated plover.
  17. She's a grand old gal, and we visit her regularly.
  18. It isn't racism to refuse to buy products from a country which cuts up people for spare parts after being convicted of minor 'crimes' like belonging to Falun Gong. Their human rights record is atrocious, and I don't want to support it. That isn't racism at all, but I'll proudly admit to bigotry - I am bigoted against cultures that would do such a thing. In fact I'll wear that brand of bigotry like a badge of honour. Might even get a T-shirt made up advertising it...
  19. Not me. More people with more money means a better society for everyone, a few billionaires contribute nothing compared to a working class and middle class with disposable income. That's undeniable economic fact.
  20. Come down to Frenchman's Bay some time. Oh, and bring a truck.
  21. At Canadian Tire a few years ago I saw little cedar blocks for sale, you put them in linen closets to keep moths out. The package said that the wood was North American, but the blocks were made in China. Great, so now we don't even have the capability to cut wood into small pieces and sand the edges smooth. We had to ship wood all the way across the Pacific Ocean to get that job done. But blame the politicians. From what I understand, under the previous American administration the rules were changed and American companies were actually given tax breaks to move their operations off-shore. So they get a government benefit to kill American jobs. I don't think 'economic treason' is too strong a phrase.
  22. Maybe people are too busy writing and phoning. And I'm sure a lot of them would also like things expressed in easier understood language, but I guess when one politician writes to another they will tend to speak in traditional bafflegab. I see all that stuff and my head begins to spin.
  23. Truer words were rarely spoken. I first tried drop-shotting a couple of years ago at Killarney PP, and it was just a quick and dirty setup. Palomared a hook about a foot and a half to two feet up the line, split shot on the bottom, and a Slammer for bait. Sat the canoe over rockfalls, dropped the line until it went slack, and then reeled up until it went taut. The result? Here ya go: You can try all the equipment you like, but what's probably more important is finding the right location/habitat, and then putting something attractive right in front of their faces. And you can do that with an ice fishing rod or a downrigger. No offense meant to anyone who goes with their own favourite specialist setup, hey, whatever you're comfortable with. But to some of us it just gets too much like work, and that's what I'm trying to get away from in my canoe.
