I takes most of the day, and the winds can be pretty rough on Opeongo. For $50 or so you can book a watertaxi right up to the portage. You just have to make sure you are there on time to catch the taxi for the ride back. They only wait about 15 mins for you then you are on your own. Take the taxi, it's still about a 2KM carry once you get to the portage. Save your strength for fishing. It doesn't take too long to get up to the east gate area from Durham region. You can likely do it just as quickly as going up the 400 to huntsville.

Geez what happened to the days when trolls only promoted BACKWOODS?

Some of the ladies I work with can turn the air pretty blue themselves. But outside of work they are still ladies. I tend to talk like a trucker at work, but watch it around my sons. The oldest is pretty quick to point out bad words. I don't get too wound up if people drop a couple bad words around my kids, it happens and the oldest knows adults swear sometimes. We were in a restaurant one day and the kids behind us were very loud and very profane, dropping the dreaded C word about some girls they knew. I asked them to have a little respect for the fact that I was sitting there with my family, and they did, grudgingly. I'm no angel either, I dropped the F bomb in front of my sergeants young daughters at work one day, that can make for a bad day.

The problems aren't quite as simple as that. If you have VOIP your information doesnt always come straight through like a land line. We have ways of telling that it's a VoIP call but we are still dependant on the caller (or worse yet a VoIP "911 operator") for the location and phone number sometimes. We get location and number info from some companies, but it sometimes takes up to 2 weeks to update on the companies end. I have had a hang up call where I had to send everyone Police,Fire and Ambulance, and 4 minutes into the call when I get the caller back she was at the other end of the city and had witnessed a huge accident with injuries in front of her house. She had moved 2 weeks prior and had updated the company when she moved. I have had other hang up calls that with the same circumstances but they turned out to be an accidental call where no one was at risk. Also with a landline, if you call 911 I have control of your line untill I decide to hang up. You can hang up all you want but every time you pick up the phone there I am (sort of like emily but fat and ugly ) If you are involved in a fight at home and someone hangs up, we arent disconected. I have had this happen many times, and had someone lift the reciever again and I can hear whats going on and keep people updated. Not so with VoIP. The ABSOLUTE worst is one company that uses a call centre called northern 911. You call 911 and you go through to them. They take the info then pass it along. If you are lucky they pass half the information along. They don't know what to ask, they arent familiar with the area you live in, problem addresses, people your local police are looking for, special projects in the community etc. Not to mention, you talk to them, they call me, I talk to them and tell the officers etc. It all takes time. And most of the time I end up calling back because they don't get all the info. Calls that don't come through with the address, have to be connected to ambulance and fire a different way (at our service at least). If we don't notice and try and transfer the call like a regular call the line is lost. Now that's our fault not VoIP's, but it is a problem, and if you are having a heart attack, the cause of the delay is not going to kill you, but the delay itself might. Having said all of that, things are improving almost daily. There is some big money to be saved with VoIP. And realistically people don't have to use 911 all that often (thank goodness). Just be aware of the risks. As I mentioned above, it's not to the point where I would feel comfortable trusting my families safety to it. But to each their own.

If you have to call 911 call from your cellphone. There are still lots of headaches with VOIP and 911. It's getting better with some companies, but it's not to the point that I would bet my families life on it.

I always enjoy reading that. And I enjoy Carlin's humour. But he didnt write that. paradox of life

That's interesting my buddy recently sold a cottage on Dickey lake. Dickey lake road east. We caught a ton of bass. Never really focused much on lake trout. At the south west end of the lake the river flows out of the lake and in early summer when the water is a bit higher we could get the boat fairly far back in the river. We also did very well for Bass at the north west end of the lake in the weeds. I don't know if its still the same but in that corner we used to catch a lot of tagged bass. The lake has a sort of narrows closer to the north end, and just south of those narrows is supposed to be good for lake trout, but like I said we never really targeted them.

My inlaws have one and they have tracks for it. They go just about everywhere, and they travel reasonably quick. I learned the hard way that they dont always come out if you break through the ice. It kind of depends how it goes in. If just the front goes through you can usually back out. But if you go right through and are floating it's pretty tough to get out without someone pulling you on a sled. And if you get one like you have picture above, and you fold the window down, don't lean on it when you are getting out. The crack, then spiderweb and your father in law gets REALLY ticked. I learned that the hard way too.

Cigarette Smoking . . . . . . (Definately N. F.)
verno replied to Photoz's topic in General Discussion
The only time I smoke with my kids in the car is on long trips. Smokes just go so well with beer that I can't help myself. And I'm certainly not stopping the car every time I open a beer. Besides the oldest one is 4 and I don't want him learning how to hotbox from a stranger. -
I get calls like that pretty regularly. These kids seem to think its pretty funny, and they don't think anyone will get hurt because when they play paintball with each other, no one gets hurt. What they dont think about is the guy driving down the road at 60 km/h isn't expecting to be hit in the eye. If it happens again get the plate first, and a description of the driver second. Then call it in. As much as you want to chase them, it's a no win situation for you. If you chase them then there are 2 people driving like idiots. And really what can you do if you catch them? If you beat the crap out of them like we would all so dearly love to do (and they definately need) then you have to explain to the judge why you beat up a kid, as good as it would feel, its not worth it in the long run. I LOVE phoning the owner of the car and asking if they know where their son is. I give them a minute to sweat before I fill them in on why I'm calling. Most of the time the parents are really ticked and have way worse plans for the kids when they get home.

That mentality is alive and well on the TV shows for sure. Trophy hunters are trophy hunters if they are in a deer stand or a boat. Either way they will kill a trophy to hang it on the wall. There are a lot of guys interested in quality deer management out in the bush during the fall. Guys will take "management bucks" or does to keep the population healthy. I'm no expert on how the system works. And I'm sure there are others that will be able to explain it better. But the ethical guys in your boat will be the ethical guy in his tree stand for the most part. Last year my only shot at a deer came on a doe. She was just at the edge of my comfort zone so I let her walk by rather than risk not killing her clean. The other thing to remember is those big old bucks dont get big and old by hanging out in front of treestands. They are sharp, and to get a good shot at one you have to beat all of their senses and instinct.

Havent had much time for fishing. The missus was carrying our second child and she was past due and uncomfortable. We made it the whole 9 months without finding out what flavour the new baby was going to be. And finally on Monday morning he arrived, kicking and screaming. 9 lb 14 ozs and 27 inches long we got to meet our new son. His big brother is all over him and loves holding him and singing to him. I told the boy that since he's a big brother now, he's not a little boy anymore, he's now a mancub. Here's a pic of the crew. My wife hates the picture but I can't think of a time when she's been more beautiful

I bought some deodorizer spray for my dog at the pet store. It's made by remington and has baking soda in it. It took the skunk smell out when nothing else would. I would trade a fishy car for a skunky dog any day.

Last year I had probs with my Q. I thought it was the burner that was plugged up. Cleaned everything really well. Bought a brush and brushed out the lines. But always had the same problem. It would burn really hot for about 15 mins and then slowly the flame would die off to nothing. I ended up buying a new regulator hose for $20 and havent had any problems since. Of course the doc put me on a vegetarian diet for 3 months so I haven't had any need for the Q lately

Lew I redid mine in 2004. The new tank cost me $1000 to install and I had already removed the old one. The furnace and chimney liner together were about $2500. I tried calling Don Park for a tank as mentioned above but they wouldnt sell to me because I wasnt a contractor.

Justherb is going on one last fishing trip.

Best of luck on your trip Cliff, and my condolences to you and your wife. -
Are you looking for a campsite in a park? If not I can PM you some info on an island campsite that you could boat to, fairly close to some decent walleye fishing. It would be around Iroqouis ON

I see tons of people fishing in there when I'm walking my dog. I think they catch carp and panfish. But I have heard rumours that the pike fishing is supposed to be really good there. I think it was kemper that posted a couple years back that he go a few pike there.

The Caravan is the one I see recovered the most. It's amazing but if someone is complaining about someone leaving the scene of a crime in a grey caravan 90% of the time it's stolen. Has something to do with the ignitions being so easy to punch. As for insurance, get a couple quotes and then ask your current company to beat them. I did that a couple years ago. For some strange reason my rates dropped by a few hundred a year when I told them I was not renewing with them since I had found a better deal.

Last year someone posted some photos of swans with tags on them, and another member was interested in hearing about any tagged swans, the tag numbers and where they were spotted. Can't remember who it was. But we saw tag 875 at the Scarborough Bluffs park today if it helps anyone out.

I thought the guy sitting at the counter was Tony's dad, like he was having a flashback or something.

Uh oh. I was up at scugog island yesterday and my pup got sprayed really good by a skunk, so I sent him in for a swim right away. That smell is enough to kill anything.

I paddled through Rock on my way down to clydegale. We didnt fish much on rock, be careful if its windy. They were dragging the lake for a body when we put in there. It's a nice lake, if you head south past the cottages and then west, there is a huge rock wall with old pictograph's on it. And though I never checked out the east side of the lake there is supposed to be an old log chute on the east side I think. If you are taking your girls and a motor boat, pack a lunch in the boat and head south to the portage to Pen lake. I remember the portage being really busy so my buddies and I had our lunch about half way through the portage next to a waterfall. I'm sure the girls would enjoy cooling down in the waterfall. As for fishing like I said we didnt fish our way through rock lake. But we always rent from Algonquin bound and the guy there was always really knowlegeable about fishing Algonquin bound
