Pounded the river for a couple hours this morning.
timmeh replied to 12footspringbok's topic in General Discussion
You can get salmon on spoons as you thought. Make sure the rod you're using is strong enough though and you'll want to spool on some stronger line than you may be using for bass. -
If you poke a few small holes in the spro frogs they will take on a bit of water and sit a little lower in the water as well. And they will cast further this way. But I still have trouble getting good hooksets sometimes.

You're right on, this is the exact problem as to why some fishing questions aren't answered. People lurk around, read reports and take and take and take but offer nothing back. They want to know exactly where to go, what to use to catch fish. Instead of doing the leg work they expect someone else to do it for them. The other problem is the silly season is beginning. Everyone wants to catch the big "salmons and trouts" in the rivers but instead of actually going out and fishing for them they sit in front of their computer instead. Like you said when people ask for beginners help and tips it's fine, and people will help. But when people ask for specific info, about locations especially, you have to understand most people don't want to give their hotspots out over the internet.

All depends on what you're after. When some species slow down, others usually pick up. The Grand can be fished year round, including ice fishing on the lower stretches if you're into that.

This is true and not meaning to be rude at all, but if you want to know you'll have to giver a go. If someone is picking off early fish they certainly won't want all of Southern Ontario showing up next week, so they'll be pretty tight lipped about it.

The fall weather is important and it's hard to say now how the fishing will be. A warm, dry fall will delay the run, while a cool, wet one will bring them in. Steelheaders are very secretive and if they are catching them they won't even tell their own mother. If the weather is favorable give it a try, at worst you'll get a days fishing in

I honestly haven't been fishing there long enough to personally notice the decline, it's never been great for me. But I can believe you that it was much better at one point. I wish I had fished it 5 years ago. Just seeing the pressure on weekdays, I haven't dared to go on a weekend ever, it's easy to see that the fishery is under major fishing stress. And the garbage is really bad. There was a full bag just sitting on the side of the boat launch. It really bothers me that people can disrespect our resources like this.

The best thing to do is to start talking to the guy and just keep chatting away until he gets so annoyed with you he'll usually leave on his own. Really chat him up and bother him. It usually works.

I was there yesterday and the weeds are in thick. Caught a few hammerhandles but nothing too great. Not a lot of shore area to fish but there is some. Just be prepared to fish weedless. On the more sickening side, I saw some guy bring one back to the launch, dead on a stringer, and then decide he didn't want it. So he threw it back dead. Just about everyone had a stringer attached to the side of their boat. Most were empty or had rather small fish. I don't think many fish live to be caught twice there. Sorry for the rant, I'm not trying to discourage you from going there at all, you can still get a few fish. It's just that little reservoir could be such a good spot if it weren't a slaughter house, or a garbage dump. It's such a shame.

The thing to take into account when using senko's in the river is the current. You will not get the same action on them as you do in still water. That being said they can still work, though i've never cleaned up on them. You will need to add some type of weight if fishing deeper moving water.

Don't bring it all with you. Pack a plano case or 2 with what you plan on using that day and leave the rest at home. As far as collections go I can find just about everything you listed sitting around me on the basement floor. I've got stuff I don't even remember buying.

River Fishing or Conservation Areas in the Rain?
timmeh replied to oates's topic in General Discussion
It's not just about the rain, changes in temperature and pressure can also greatly affect the fishing. As for river fishing, after a heavy rain it's usually very tough. heavy rains increase the flows and turbidity and the fishing often is tougher. -
I don't have the official answer but the common sense answer would be that if you trap them in one place only use them within that watersystem and only in areas they could have moved to on their own (ie. don't take them above or below dams or other barriers).

I'm sure you'll enjoy the show, the amp is a great place to see a concert and Pearl Jam always puts on a great one. I caught them the last few times they've been through town but couldn't make this one.

Hook sharpeners? Maunual - Electric - do you use one?
timmeh replied to wask's topic in General Discussion
I have a small manual stone that I keep with me. Stones are small and easy to pack into pockets, and they can usually fix up any hook. I find having 2 trebles on smaller sized lures a pain in the but so I sometimes remove one so it's important I keep the remaining one sharp. -
You can say that again. I've been there once and won't be back. If a CO were to just take a walk down there on a busy evening they'd clean up; with guys keeping snagged fish, fishing multiple lines off the pier.. As for your question there is no one rig that is always the best. Bring several options and find out whats working.

Millions of missing fish signal crisis on the Fraser River
timmeh replied to kickingfrog's topic in General Discussion
This is a really sad story. But the considering the way we've managed our fish stocks worldwide, or should I say not managed, it's not overly surprising,. it seems to be happening everywhere. -
Yikes that second one looks rough

Do you wear a life jacket while fishing
timmeh replied to knightfisher's topic in General Discussion
Whenever I'm in the kayak I wear it 100% of the time, no questions about it. If I'm fishing from a boat I will wear it when the waters rough, but honestly I will take it off if I'm fishing a spot for a while. I personally do not think it should be mandatory. You can't protect people from everything and you need to be responsible for your own actions. And if you feel you don't need one that's your choice, and it shouldn't be forced upon you. With no disrespect meant at all to the victims, and while life jackets likely would have saved some of their lives, most people end up in trouble because they made bad decisions on or before they went out on the water, unrelated to wearing a life jacket. Also would everyone follow the law all the time if it were made? And would wearing a life jacket convince to take more risks on the water (ie. more speed, rough water) because they feel safer? -
There is a place right beside the bridge to the north of the park where you can rent a boat. I forget how much but it was reasonable. We got a few bass around the bridge.

Which would you chose, if you were me, or if you were you??? ;)
timmeh replied to michaelkovacs's topic in General Discussion
Another option to consider is a square back canoe. That way you can easily add a small motor. -
What you can expect is a lot of boat traffic, and personal watercraft whipping around you everywhere. I've never fished from a boat but had a little luck shore fishing right near the dam, but nothing too good. Try to get out as early in the morning as possible. That way you can avoid some of the boat traffic.

Port Maitland / Dunville / Byng (1 LAST QUESTION!)
timmeh replied to rbaquial's topic in General Discussion
The pier is very busy, but if you've got some time one evening that may be a good time to try with minnows. Another option for rigging is to use a large sinker, then a small split shot about 2-3 feet from the hook. With the split shot the large sinker won't get to the hook and will give the minnow a few feet to swim around near the bottom. -
I recently purchased at SOT kayak for fishing and you've received some good advice here (the same I received). If you are considering buying one I would strongly suggest you try out a few models first. I was advised of this and am very thankful I did. My SOT is easy to fish out of but you do get wet. One solution to this is to get some waterproof clothing. Personally if it's cold out I just wear my waders when I go out.

Last year water levels were better but previously in the drier years that river can be pretty low and it can be hard for fish to move up. And you're right about the fishing pressure, that place is a zoo. I don't fish it often, even though I have a free place to stay less than 5 min away, as I usually do better elsewhere.
