I thought it would be a good post for everyone. Too often it seems I see people "man-handling" fish before they are released. Sometime it's unavoidable, and sometimes its the "professionals" who should know better. Doing things like holding big fish vertically by the gill only to later release them, is not good for the fish at all. I don't know why anyone does it. Pictures look so much better when the fish is horizontal anyway. A lot of stress that fish experiance is simply due a lack of knowledge of the fishermans part. There seems to be a lack of general information that you can only learn from other experiance fisherman, or reports like these. One of my teachers at Flemming once said "I don't understand why people only hold bass by the jaw? Do you want to be held up by your jaw? NO! Give the fish some support!" He has a point. In my mind it's simply a respect thing. Respect for the fish, and for the resource as a whole. I take a certain pride in the knowledge that most of the fish I release will survive. I love knowing that the trophies are still where I caught them. -Ramble

On another thread there was some discussion about fish mortality during catch and release. This is a report for the MNR. It's a really informative read and covers all aspects of the fish catching process. Definatly worth your time. http://www.mnr.gov.on.ca/mnr/pubs/fishing/..._guidelines.pdf It's in a PDF format. -Ramble

I'm planning on heading up to the Bancroft area this upcoming weekend...we havn't decided on a lake yet. I'm wonder what the ice conditions are like up that way? I'm presuming they are in decent shape. We wont be on any big water, but i'd still like to have an idea. I'm also looking for any tips or suggestions for catching brook trout up that way. Water depth we should be targeting, and the kind of under water structure we should be focusing on. It will be the 1st time dad and I are are going to be out on the ice targeting brookies. From what i understand we should be looking for 10-20 feet of water near a point or some other location like that. That said I like to hear what works well for other people. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. -Ramble

I sent you a PM that should help with the trip in general.

I've also used them the last couple of years. Usually as a follow up for Northerns. I have also found that they arn't half bad at probing deepweed edges.

The limit of 120 kinda had me scratching my head a little as well. But i totally understood the reasoning behind the crayfish transposrt ban. You guys should be glad that they didn't ban their use all together. The damage rusty's do to the ecosystem is extensive. If you want more information let me know. The bait regualtions on transportation and things use are trying to stop oar at least limit invasive species spreading. There is about 140 known exotic species in the great lakes. They MNR is trying to keep them their. If you want to complain to your MPP about something, compalin about the lack of regualtion and enforcement of ballast discharge from ships. If the critters don't get into the country then you won't have to worry about the MNR passing laws to limit their movements. Their decisions are based upon trends and observations they have made in the field. Remember that they are protecting the fishery so it can be used sustainibly. They are not protecting the fisherman. If you think a regulation is dumb, they probably have a reason for it that is at least logical. Try to keep an open mind when you read some of this stuff. It has to go through a lot of political man-handing before it becomes law...and we all know what polititions can do to a good idea! tight lines fellas -Ramble
