  1. You can fish whatever is coming on your hook all year around, but you have to release bass now.
  2. Neither pickerels, nor walleyes They are zanders. http://www.pikezander.co.uk/zander.htm
  3. People may send you even to Detroit to get a pickerel :)The best way for you - is just take a HW # 7 or #41 to Ottawa direction - there are tons of beautiful small and big lakes, rivers everywhere and each one has some walleyes. To get that kind of fish you should know the spots there the fish may stay. Walleye is not a stupid bass to be everywhere. Read some publications, come to the lake/river and using your knowledge try to guess where the fish may stay. There is no even particular lure for it. It takes jig, crank, spinner, spoon (depending of the place, season and time). The easiest place to get a pickerel is Grand River (from Caledonia to Cayuga) - but there you need to investigate some holes after rapids (Prompt - do not use spinners now there)
  4. The latest news - he was electrocuted 3 days ago.
  5. Local GarPike from the Grand. Looks nice but useless
  6. Correct I boiled them for an hour changing water twice and fried them after – delicious.
  7. I have many different lures, and the Salmo one are pretty nice. Small fat cranks work really well in the shallow Grand (small - medium bass, eye, pike, sheep, rock, silver bass) from July-August to October (after twisters). However, the Jaxon cranks are much better in the same fishing conditions. One bite on Salmo - 3-5 on Jaxon. Unfortunately both Jaxon and Salmo have one big problem, the fin (wing) cracks very fast if you hit something underwater. Rapala (tried many) is not as good as those 2 brands. This review is related to lower Grand only. Different lakes or rivers need different lures. I think everyone knows that
  8. Thanks for info about white bass. I didn't know about that.
  9. Really nice report and great photos! Thx About those silver basses (sometimes people call them blue basses). Last May - June on Grand (Caledonia) I got many of them. One was a big one (for that kind of fish) 550 – 600g. However, they almost did not bite in July – September.
  10. Nice silver bass. Can we take them in this period or they are closed as pigs (small & large M basses)?
  11. If you like mono, my order 1. Shakespeare Cajun (red) 6 - 10 lb for Medium (Minus is memory) 2. Stern Original 4-6 lb (yellow) for Ultra-L (Minus is too stretchy) I've just ordered P-Line 6lb to try on my Ultra-L
  12. The main difference between musky & pike is not a colour or stripes. It's a number of filtration holes in the snout. Muskie has 9, pike has 6
  13. http://www.grandriver.ca/index/Agreement.c...b1=6&sub2=5 There is nothing to do up to middle/end of May. Just ugly catfish may be a trophy
  14. The same happened to me at Mountsberg last May before the season was opened. I got 3 stitches in the hospital. However, the pike was just about 3Lb. The lesson – do not fish until the season.
  15. Below Caledonia is a good spot
  16. There is no theory. The government poisons them on regular bases for some reason.
  17. After the rain stopped on Sunday, I got only 2 basses on Belwood and Guelph. That was the worst day for me during this summer. Maybe the moon? Also on Saturday the Grand was completely out of scope because of extremely high water level. Actually what happened to Grand River? When is the water level supposed to be dropped down?
  18. Yes, Powerbait twisters, for example, give me more bites than others. What about original one? I am talking about Mister Twister, who first placed the silicone lures on the market.
  19. Grand River is not an easy river to fish. It is not Rice or Pigeon lakes where you can get a bite anywhere and doesn’t really matter what to use. What you need to know on the Grand. 1. Where to fish 2. What to fish 3. What to use Now, in July, the cranks in the murky water produce almost no results. For sport fishing (no live baits) you should use twisters or tubes. Use a 1/8 light jig head and a twister. You should move it constantly with very slow speed on 10 – 25 cm from the bottom. I use white, brown green tail and brown orange tail twisters. The line is 4-6lb. Fishing rod/reel is ultra light or light. Tight the jig head to your line – no clips. This setup is for small, silver and rock basses and sometimes walleyes. Just last Sunday I got a 15lb carp on the white twister and 4lb Stern mono line was good enough to take it on the shore in 30 minutes. If you want walleyes – try heavier jig head to move/drag it slowly almost on the bottom of the river with stops to produce a zigzag pattern. Here you can use tubes, but twisters are fine as well. In late August-October try your cranks (fats are better). I use Japanese Yo-Zuri or Duel cranks with a great success. Rapala is not as good for Grand, but much cheaper. http://www.yo-zuri.com/Products/Prod3dMicro.htm http://www.yo-zuri.com/Products/ProdLiveBait.htm http://www.yo-zuri.com/Products/ProdHardcore.htm http://www.hottackle.com/index.php?cPath=2...a27697c05052b32 Now is where to fish. Just look where anglers are and go there. Ask them and they can help you. I fish between Caledonia and York. Forgot – you should have waders to fish there. Good luck!
  20. I got 3 walleyes with tags from Grand in Caledonia area. Two of them were small (450 - 600 gr) and I released them with those jaw tags back in the water. Another one was not bad 1.3kg and I took it. I keep this tag. It looks like a black soft metal ring with some numbers. Where can I call (e-mail) to report about the fish tag?
  21. I bought the same one for $79.99 last winter. I'd had used the rod just for 1 week. A medium size ( around 3.5 - 4kg) pike broke it as a match on Berg 3 weeks ago. The carbon was a real crap. I have a lot of experience in fishing and know how to use spinning rod. Since that time I've not even looked at the name Frenwick. However, the rods from that company are really catching the eyes. They look perfect, but…. rotten inside. May be you'll have better luck.
  22. I fish near Caledonia. Good basses (average size 600g-1kg) under Caledonia railway bridge (in deep water) using cranckbaits (fats), spoons and medium/heavy rod. The line is Cajun mono 10Lb. Also down from Caledonia to York for smaller sizes using spinners/jigs and ultra light equipment. Jig will be more effective than spinner, but it's not as sporty as the last one (easy to get a bite). If you don't have so much experience using spinning rod, use plastic twisters kinda light-brown colour and medium jig heads. If very shallow water - light head. Colour of the head is not very important. Be careful, there are some huge catfish under the railway bridge; adjust the reel brake properly. My ultralight rod equiped with just 4lb mono line. It's good enough for 3-5lb walleye (they are not good fighters during a day time). They may be found in some deeper holes under Caledonia. There are not so many pikes (rarely small gar pikes); therefore, you do not need to use a steel feeder. Good luck
  23. Hi guys, My name is Vladimir and I'm from Toronto. I read this forum a lot, but have not post anything yet. I had the same problem as Stoti does. I tested 3 different braided lines (the last one was Schtern) and sometimes the cast was finished with the same result - the lure went to China (in the middle of Grand river under Caledonia bridge). However, a friend of mine, who's just started fishing, successfully uses braided lines. I noticed only one difference in casting. I pull my lure almost twice a distance he does (lines were the same at that time). I think there is too much pressure to the line if any wing knot. The braided line may be not as good for dynamic pressure. However in static pressure the line is extremely strong. I tested that. I tied a piece of lead to my Schtern braided line tied the line to the tree and frown the lead in the river. I found that the braided line always brakes; however, mono works as a spring and brakes much less than braided line.
