  1. Great report and pics...Pulling off fishing sessions at those hours of the night is hardcore to the max!!! A well deserved fish
  2. Great report and pics...You've certainly got passion for the sport. In time, you'll buy all the bells and whistles...It's inevitable. What kind of therapy is that?! That's like giving the heroin addict a bigger dosage of the drug...We need to cut you off completely from carp fishing - Cold turkey...I get first dibs on your Aero GTE-B. If anything I blame Victor for your addiction.
  3. I see panhandlers begging for change all the time by the TTC stations. What ticks me are the ones who smoke packs upon packs of cigarettes at the corner while sitting on their @$$ begging for change...If you're at the bottom of society's food chain, the least you can do is get your priorities in check. If you have enough $ for cigarettes or booze, you don't need my change.
  4. There are thousands of carp out there but there is certainly a finite amount of spots on shore where people can fish (be it for carp, steelhead, salmon, bass, pike, etc). There seems to be a current trend of land privatization along with commercial development (again privatization). All it takes is a few bad anglers who leave garbage on the bank for areas to be closed. I was saddened when I found empty cans of corn lying on the bank along with empty hook and egg sinker packages at one of my favourite spots (Not to mention the timmy's cups) - The garbage can was 10ft away. Would you let your child play with razor sharp canned corn lids or hooks carelessly tossed on the grass? Similarly, I've heard of many cases where dogs have ingested discarded fishing hooks, line, sinkers, etc. The fact is, the WWW is a public space for anyone to gain access to. Most of us have passed the point of believing that everyone who frequents this web-site, along with others, share the same level of appreciation of our natural resources that we have. Not everyone follows the fishing regulations and not everyone treats their catch with respect. This past weekend, a father with his 2 young daughters I met were disappointed that they couldn't fish 2 local parks because the city closed the park to fishing - Most likely due to the large amounts of garbage left behind. The father had fished them for years. It's always sad when you lose a great fishing spot close to home.
  5. Great catch and pics. The only thing holier IMO, would be a 40lb mirror.
  6. I wasn't too worried...It just means you'll have to get me a whole new outfit. Dad, I've got my eyes on - Chris Orne or Nick Buss custom tied Harrison Torrix 2.75lb carp rod - Shimano LC baitrunner or Daiwa Infinity BBR or Daiwa Sportsmatic (I'm not too picky ) - Solar Worldwide pod + global conversion kit + solar buzz bars - Set of Delkim TXI bite alarms + Receiver - Set of Kryptonite hangers (Or swingers if you can find a set) Don't worry, we don't have to tell mom about the bill
  7. urbanangler, to minimize the chance of donating your rod to the carp gods, you can loosen your drag so it acts very much like a baitrunner. Nice fish...Sounds like you guys had a great day
  8. Most reports I've seen with that pic said the fish was caught somewhere in Italy.
  9. Victor, are you speaking from experience? By the way Vic, you still need: A new spod rod, spods, catapult, set of Delkims, waders + wading boots, gore-tex rain jacket, big-pit reel + matching distance rod...That's all I can think of at the moment...I'll think of more later Cliff, if you need help getting Euro-tackle, I can help you with some shopping...All I require is a credit card number and your address
  10. I use circle hooks for bass, panfish and bullheads and love them. I've tried them for carp many times with different baits but just couldn't stick a carp. The ones that I did manage to hook came off after a short while. Other people have tried it and it seems to work for them just fine. Give them a go and see what happens
  11. I wish I had an assistant to mix up my groundbait for me. I still have to do the grunt work in my family. If your daughter's up for it, she can mix 40lbs of groundbait for me any time. Great report + pics If you find feeders too costly, you can always make your own open-ended swim feeders using either 1-2" PVC tubes or womens' hair curlers and a snap swivel. If you use pink hair curlers though, be prepared for some mocking by the other anglers.
  12. It's always sad to lose a family member, especially one who was such a great fishing buddy. My condolences to your's and Ed's family.
  13. Hey 007, we were using: - 1 Shimano Technium 2.5lb rod - 1 Shimano Exage STC 2.75lb rod - 1 Shimano 4500b baitrunner - 1 Shimano 6000 Thunnus - 12-15lb mono - Various hooklink materials although supple braid (PowerPro + a few European brands) is what most of our fish came on - It's just my confidence material. I switched up to coated braid when my dad wasn't looking and nailed a few fish that were ejecting his rigs. * Also had a few salmon/steelhead outfits in the car for stalking I'm not really an expert on fishing method feeders but I use them on occasion to gauge the activity level of fish. I use it to test various flavours and switch my hook-baits accordingly to what they prefer. I prefer to use a groundbait mix which is fairly hard for the fish to get off...Reasoning is I want the fish to attack the feeder in a competitive fashion rather than suck up the loose bits - By using a fairly stiff mix which stays on the feeder, I can get a better clue to what the fish's activity level is like and generally how many fish are in the general area - many beeps on the alarm = good activity level. If I'm only getting beeps and no takes after a while, I know something is not right with my rigs. The other way which you can use a feeder is to use a loose mix to attract the fish to a given area. After a short while it crumbles off and sits in a clump on the bottom free for fish to suck up. It's a good tactic to use when fish are less active. This way is similar to using PVA bags which melt away when it comes into contact with water (PVA bags are expensive though). Both ways work. It really depends on what you have the most confidence in using. I prefer using inline semi-fixed leads more than anything when ledgering - again it also depends on the type of bottom you'll be fishing too. As far as reeling in, it depends on the type of water I'm fishing and the number of fish present. Where I was at on Saturday, if I wasn't getting at least some bite in 25min, I reeled in to check the rig and casted to another spot within the spot. Other times I may let it sit for an hour or two before reeling in. It's all variable.. Still waiting for the spod rod to arrive.
  14. Decided to spend Saturday carp fishing…Not like I do anything else during the summer. Headed northeast to the Kawartha region to see how the fish were doing. A few of my friends had reported dismal results the last few weeks with nothing really to show for their efforts – Or gas money. Looking at the forecast and weather reports leading up to Saturday, I had a gut feeling something was going to happen. Woke up at 4:27am and did my usual routine. - Eat breakfast - Brush teeth - Pack car - Go to bathroom - Feed lucky fish - Go to bathroom again - Pack missing stuff into car - Go over checklist - Pack more stuff into car Off we go at 6:01am Arrive at the swim at 7:40am and bait up – We stopped in at Timmy’s on the way for some donuts. We were welcomed by a flock of baby ducks waiting for some free handouts Not long after, roughly 20min after arriving, the fun begins. We’re greeted with this gorgeous fish Action was a little slow after that first fish, my dad and I would get line bumps every few minutes however the fish were striking short. We both reel in and I find that my hook-bait is tangled with my method feeder and my dad’s rig is snagged up in some wood…No wonder…NOTE TO SELF, CHECK RIGS IF YOU MISS 8 CONSECUTIVE TAKES After we corrected our mistakes, we were getting runs fast and furious. At one point we were into a double header where both fish took our hook-baits at the very same second and both decided to head in the same direction. Fish were actually taking our baits even before they would hit bottom. Weighing a long one which barely fit inside the “Monster weigh sling” Weighing in at 23lb 10oz Dad with one of his in the low teens A golden apparition in his element The golden apparition in my element – Well, not really, he put up quite a tussle when I tried to get him into the sling. He whacked me twice in the face with his tail and slimed my shirt. One decided to take me for a ride through a jungle of snags and branches. I had to keep my rod low to the water to prevent the tip getting caught in the overhead branches. Then it chose to go around some overhanging shrubbery Closer to victory Victory is mine The aging warrior. I was surprised with the fight this fish put up. It was missing his left pectoral fin. Big tail + chunky physique = power to go where you want, when you want. This one weighed in at 24lbs 2oz A great day overall. 24 fish were landed between my dad and me, with only a couple lost fish – One of which snagged my dad up in some serious roots and forced me to go for a swim; it eventually broke the hook link material and swam for freedom. Fish had a preference for maize soaked and boiled in my secret Agent-X formula. Tried a few different flavours of boilies + paste baits and got a few knocks but didn’t manage to get a run out of them. Arms and shoulders are sore. Back is aching but I love it. I really should study for my managerial economics exam coming up…There’s always tomorrow…Or the day after.
  15. Great pics and report guys urbanangler, I'm surprised your parents let you fish with a creepy dude like DSN (j/k)
  16. Carping on the fly is a total blast! Nice fish too There's no escape from carp. Once bitten by the bug, symptoms may include 1) Desire to smell and taste groundbait flavours 2) Corn is at THE TOP of your grocery list 3) You drool profusely when you hear words that incorporate 'carp' in them: Like carpet or Carpel Tunnel syndrome It's a disease with absolutely no cure.
  17. Seems like it's another 80+lb fish out of Rainbow. Ironically it was caught at peg 19, 1 peg away from where Gary Hagues caught his world record in November for the first and second times. Minutes before he caught that fish, he managed to get a 69lb common carp. I wonder how much groundbaiting those anglers at that lake actually do? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/arti...in_page_id=1770
  18. At that rate, you'd be better off hiring a guide for 8hrs.
  19. I got out this morning to do a little fishing with dad. Conditions weren’t great considering the cooler weather. It was a nice day to be outside to get some Vitamin D. We tried a couple different spots along the harbourfront without much to show for our efforts. Carp and pike were our initial targets and with most of the carp sulking on bottom, it was just pike we were mostly targeting. Mepps, Vibrax, Husky Jerks, X-raps and other lures that looked like pike food were used. I’m not much of a pike fisher-person; I only go out for them 2 to 4 times on average per year so my inventory on lures is quite small. In the last spot we tried, I broke out the fly rod and tried for a couple hours. 8wt rod and nymph taper line (probably not the best line for casting big pike flies into wind). No tapered leaders either for finesse – Straight 15lb mono with a titanium leader + fly at the end. Casting those large Deceiver and Clouser minnows was like trying to fling around an apple on a limp rope – I forgot to clean my fly line which made shooting line the through the guides a little rough. I need to invest in a stripping basket…I had fly line tangled around my feet more than half the time. Ugliest back-cast ever – Big loop for big and soggy flies. In the end, we got nothing but the exercise and fresh air was good.
  20. In some form or another, my fly reels will eventually find their way into water (or mud) during the course of an average day of fishing. Most reels nowadays are pretty much maintenance free...A quick rinse in the bathroom sink and a wipe down with a cloth is all I ever do after each trip.
  21. Seneca College also has a bass fishing class along with ice fishing stuff http://www.senecac.on.ca/parttime/pip-fishing.html
  22. Nice fish!...Nothing like hearing the sound of your bite alarm go off...Music to the ears...Or to a lesser extent, the bell to Pavlov's dogs (at least for me).
  23. I tried the regular Vanish a few times over the years in different pound tests and didn't care for any of them. 4, 6, 10, 14lb were used and my findings were - First time out on the water, each line performed great, no problems other than a little more memory than regular mono. - Second time out on the water (usually next day or 2 days after first trip), the lines would coil like mad and would fray on basically everything - eg soft weeds, sand, gravel - Forget about using near zebra mussels. - At home I performed my own abrasion tests - Lines in 4-10lb test frayed while I cleaned the grime off with a moderately damp paper towel... WTH! I also had it fray on grass while doing some distance casting in the local park. - Knot strength (both wet and dry) was horrible using various knots - Trilene knot, polamar knot, clinch knot, improved clinch, grinner knot, uni knot, and uni to uni knots to braid. - Fresh lines would mysteriously snap on the initial run of a carp, 25ft up the line. Other cons Too expensive to fill an entire spool with - Especially a large baitrunner, big-pit or larger spinning reels. Better off sticking to other brands of fluorocarbon IMO. I'm having my best experiences using other brands of fluorocarbon (eg Siglon and Scientific Angler) as leader/tippet material and hybrid lines like P-line.
  24. Just picked 50 worms from my front lawn...Would've been more if the grass wasn't so long...Those things are lightning fast! Still raining hard but that's the best time for some worm pickin'
  25. Where are your textbooks? You should be studying! You need a girlfriend to put you back inline. Great pics
