I think if you can afford all the scuba gear and the spearing equip then you can afford to buy a rod and reel and angle like the rest of us have to. Be kind to the fish you catch cause they didn't have to bite your hook ya know.

I'm not sure what other places are like but I know Esnagami Wilderness Lodge was a perfect 10. The hospitalitity and food was second to none, the staff was awesome, and the wilderness well speaks for itself. $ for $ an awesome experience and can't wait to do it again. No regrets, can't say enuff about the place.

I fish locally once we have decent ice and I use a hand auger I bought at Canadian Tire. 6" SwedeBore and it works great for me, a hand auger can be tougher as the season drags due to the thicker ice but it well worth the money. If you are ever in town here let me know and we'll see if we can hook up and get out. The ice locally isn't good yet but within a week or so should be okay. Come on cold.

I'm still waiting patiently for some of the items I bid on for the Big Chevy auction. Is anyone else in the same boat as me? It's been a while now and kinda gettin anxious to find something in the mail one day soon.

You're absolutely right...there is no fish in either of those two rivers...pack up and leave while the gettins still good for an awesome round of golf or a couple sets of tennis.....ever try bowling much more satisfying then fishing the Grand for these..... I know I would rather be doin just about anything even in the winter than fishing the Speed....... Well good luck with your new adventures in bowling and/or lawn mowing or whatever you decide to do with your time instead.

January 8, 2007 ONTARIO GOVERNMENT ACTING SWIFTLY TO CONTROL FURTHER SPREAD OF NEW FISH VIRUS Restricts Use Of Live Bait Fish For The 2007 Winter Fishing Season TORONTO — The Ontario government is taking immediate steps to control the further spread of a new fish virus into lakes and rivers in central and northern Ontario, Natural Resources Minister David Ramsay announced today. “Viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) has recently been discovered in fish from the lower Great Lakes,” said Ramsay. “While not a threat to human health, it has been linked to the die-offs of at least four species of fish. We’re asking all anglers and bait fish dealers in the affected areas to help slow down the spread of VHS to protect fish species by observing the necessary restrictions on the transport and use of live bait fish this winter.” Waters known to be infected with the virus include Lake St. Clair, Lake Erie, the Niagara River, Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Restrictions are necessary because a large portion of the bait fish harvested for sale to anglers for winter fishing in Ontario is caught in Lake Erie and the upper Niagara River. If the virus spreads to Ontario’s inland waters and upper Great Lakes, it could have serious ecological, social and economic impacts. To control the spread of the virus, effective immediately, Ontario has been divided into three zones – the infected zone, the buffer zone and the virus-free zone. In the infected zone, south of Highways 401 and 402 across Ontario, live bait fish will not be allowed to be commercially harvested or transported north of the two highways. In the buffer zone, north of Highways 401 and 402 to the northern limits of Fisheries Management Zones (FMZ) 16, 17 and 18, as well as all of FMZ 12 east of FMZ 18, and Zone 13 (Lake Huron), live bait fish can be harvested and used but cannot be transported north of these fisheries management zones. In the remainder of Ontario, known as the virus-free zone, live bait fish can be harvested and transported as usual. VHS is an infectious disease of fish caused by the viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus. Several known strains of VHS are found in freshwater and saltwater fish around the world. Recently, a new strain of VHS has been found in the lower Great Lakes – the first time VHS has been detected in freshwater in Canada. Ontario , the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans are currently working together on a comprehensive plan to be in place by the spring of 2007, to control the spread of the virus to new areas of Ontario and other provinces. Restrictions on the use of live bait fish are necessary while the more comprehensive plan is being developed. In October 2006, the United States Department of Agriculture banned the import of certain live fish from Ontario and Quebec, as well as the transport of live fish within the eight U.S. Great Lakes states. In late November, New York State imposed additional restrictions on the harvest and transport of live fish, including bait fish, within New York State.

I've heard the Mr. heater is way better. I have the Black cat and even on the really cold days and eves it is suffient enough to take the chill out. But then again My blood is like tar and I think I'm part eskimo or something....maybe its just that I AM CANADIAN.

I'm booked with an operator for the first weekend in Feb. Not too worried about ice. Unfortunately I won't be able to get out locally or to Simcoe until we get some really cold nites. Dang as I swear and stare at my portable sitting there in the basement beckoning me to at least sit in it and pretend to ice fish....at least its warm sitting in it where it is now....lol.

They have had them for several yrs now. The Russians are red, the Checz are red and blue so I think they look very cool wearing the black and red with the nifty red and white racing stripe down the sleeves. Who cares anyway as long as they play well and win. What goaltending a good start to the tourney. GO CANADA GO.

If you add coarse salt before freezing then it won't get all mushy when you go to use it for Pike.

The MNR should step in and close Scugog for the winter as well, with or without ice just to give the fish a break. Sorry about the hut operators out there but the future of the fishery could depend on it. I myself luv ice fishin but I think Scugog should be closed like the rest of the Kawarthas or maybe some sort of rotating yearly schedule...hey that might be cool fish a different Kawartha lake every year...hmmm.

You could be a greenhorn and make mega bucks...ever watch deadliest catch. Stick with it for a few seasons and be a deckhand and make even more dough. Use that money to start your own business, why work for someone else if you can run your own.

Ya would have to agree with Dutch fishin with BBR and Sleded is a blast, hopin to get out with you guys a bit this year on the ice again...hopin for the big freeze. I think to fish with anyone here would be really cool. But I'm really likin the shots comin from DanC and the Thunder Bay area...not a very local drive from here though.
