With all this cold weather I thought I'd make a report about another one of my adventues from a couple of years ago with my fiancee. I have several hundred pictures from several different adventures thoughout the last couple of years...so narrowing it down is hard. We left Whibty and had 3 weeks to go north....once again not sure where...we ended up drivings about 16-17 hours north towards the Manitoba border in search of some remote camping and fishing. Along the way we saw several moose and was lucky enough to capture some of them without putting the car into the ditch reaching for the camera. These crossed the road right in front of us as we came around the bend.... A couple of hours later we came across these two After what seemed like an eternity we reached Thunder Bay...and we both decided that we couldn't go any further...but of course we did. So after getting some information from the local tackle shop, we decided to head south towards the Minnesota border....there is a chain of lakes that apparently contain some smallmouths.....did they ever. We had to travel for about another 160 km down some old logging roads with several smaller roads braching in all directions. I really didn't think we'd ever find the small remote lake.....thank god for the GPS so I knew the general direction.....We came across this little feller along the way.... A little lake along the way.... So finally we came near the lake...or so I thought. We had travelled 17 hours and now we had to portage the canoe, camping, fishing gear to the lake which was another 1/2 km through the bush. So finally after another hour or so we finally made it.......we were so exhausted by them....with no place in site to set up camp until we came across this.....home sweet home....awesome spot. This spot made it all worth it....and the fishing was simply awesome....by far the best smallie action I have ever experienced....not the largest fish in the world...but the numbers were unbelievable. Practically ever cast we hooked one.....I couldn't even light a smoke without taking my line out of the water....almost lost my rod 3 times out of the canoe. Here's some pics... One afternoon we had to go to shore to relieve ourselves when I came across this....kinda cool to find this Canada/U.S marker securly fastened in the rock.. And here's a couple of more pics......my fiancee was started to get ticked with me wanting her to take all the pictures of the smallies...so we stopped taking pics....but I got a couple more. And of course...she always catching the biggest fish.....and yes...she never lets me forget it... As I woke up one morning....I ventured outside to find the nearest tree and watched this guy....what an awesome way to start the morning... Overall it was an amazing trip....seen 7 moose, 3 bears, grouse, caught a minimun of 80-100 smallies (each) every day....unbelievable. We will definately be going back!!! Hope you enojy....I sure did....brought back alot of warm memories on this very cold day. Jason

I'm speechless...New Heavyweight Champion...WOW!! Jason

My Uncle from back home (Newfoundland) sent me these pictures. Simply incredible...I have seen over 500 moose...but never albino. The chances of seeing 1 albino is extremely rare.....but 2 on the same day....unbelievable. Hope you enjoy these...... Jason

I have the 55lb Maxumm on my 14.5 aluminum and I have never really encountered a situation where I have needed it....but it's nice to know that if I do...it's there. I have accidentally cranked the dial to 100% and my passenger ended up falling down....thankfully he landed in the boat. I don't see a problem with it on a 12'.....more the better...just use common sense. Jason

Those are certainly some beauties.....love the scenery up that way!!! Jason

Thanks man....that was nice. Jason

I travel by 7 gas stations on my way to work this morning from Courtice...thru Oshawa and Whibty and into Ajax. 6 out of 7 were empty. Yesterday they were 4 that had gas.....now ONLY 1......not good. Jason

I hate spending my money outside of Canada....but I bought the Shimano Chronarch 51mg for $250.00 Cdn. taxes/shipping including delivered to my front door in 3 days from California. The EXACT same reel is $389.99 +taxes at Bass Pro (Vaughan)....go figure......Ebay is the only way to go....I've bought several items in the last 2 years and refuse to be gouged anymore... Jason

Thanks guys....it was certainly a trip of a lifetime. Solopaddler....as per Kattagami...we went about another 20 minutes or so pass there...we wanted to fish it but I was a little nervous due to the size of the lake....over 20km long. This spring I plan on going back up there (with a few bear bangers) with my new boat so Kattagami may be an option.....but I got my mind set on fishing another more remote lake involving a 3km hike (with canoe) to the headwaters of where I was fishing.....I'm sure there must be some 20lb+ pike in there. Jason

A couple of springs ago I had some time off so I decided to jump in the car with a buddy of mine (Dave).....had no idea where the hell we were going, but we both had no time restrictions so we just started driving north.....way north. Stopping along the way only for gas and coffee....the only problem in Ontario is that there are TOO MANY lakes.....we passed north bay....temagami....new liskeard but we had decided that it was still way to populated. We both wanted an adventure of complete solitude and serenity and decided that only the most remote place would do. Eventually we ended up in Cochrane...about 10 hours north of Toronto...beautifull scenery along the way. So in Cochrane we had a decision to make...keep going along Hwy#11 or keep heading north towards James Bay and the Quebec border...so after a few minutes looking at the map..we decided that we would need to fill up the extra gas cans and head north to the end of the road....another 245kms...about 125kms south of James Bay. After about 45 minutes into the ride...we both looked at each other and realized that we were in the middle of nowhere....no other vehicles or people....society as we know it had disappeared....finally!!!! We just keep going and going...finally about 1 1/2 hours we came to the end of the road....it was not possible to drive any farther. With 12 small lakes within 5 kms in every direction...we decided to set up camp on the side of the road at a river. It was actually very scary....we were in the middle of no where...when I turned my car off and got out...it was dead silent...I mean absolutely NOTHING.....hadn't seen 1 single vehicle except this.....along with 7 others since we left Cochrane....not a good sign of things to come. The bears were everywhere....so eventually we got settled in....after being up for nearly 18 hours straight we crashed hard. The next morning we wake up and decided to go fishing of course....we fished the river and the lake for the next 9 days.....it was absolutely amazing....the fishing was so good that we forgot to take alot of pics....but I got a few. A nice size pike....normally I grab them behind the head and use pliers to get the hooks out....but the head on this guy was too big.....I managed to get him in my boat (12ft tin can) but he trashed my boat...ripped the wires out of my trolling motor and fishfinder and broke one of my rods. It was absolute MADNESS. I had to really take my time to revive him and then it took me over 20 minutes to get everything all hooked up again. Hard lesson learned...never bring a 16lb pike into the boat without a net. Dave's big pike A few walleye that we ate over a couple of days One morning my buddy decided to sleep in so I decided to go fishing by myself....I made it up to a small bend in the river and tried to anchor but the current was too fast.....so I decided to lift the motor and lodge it into some tree's at the rear and use the anchor in the front...finally completely anchored, when this comes out of the woods about 40 feet from me...it was so ticked...it tore at the beaver house for about 15 minutes straight....I yelled, and pounded my paddles against my aluminum boat but he wouldn't leave Finally about taking about 20 photos and making lots of more noise he left....at one point I thought he was goiung to swim over to me....I would have never had enough time to dislodge the motor and anchor.....so after about 1 hour or so these guys decide to cross the river...a cow and her new calf.....simply awesome morning!! Overall it was an amazing trip....probably over 300-400 fish, 19 bears in total(4cubs), 4 moose, grouse, and memories to last a lifetime we decided to head home for some Tim Horton's and a hot shower. Only 6 days later I went on another adventure...save that for another time....A couple sunset pics for the road.....hope you enjoyed. Jason

All I can say is WOW.....awesome adventure by itself....but to spend it with your dad and uncle that's PRICELESS Are you planning on doing some canoe trips this year? Jason

Well after getting skunked last weekend (except for a few perch)...we went back out to the hut to give it another try. It was so nice being able to drive out to the hut on 15" of good black ice....the weather was actually nice...about -5C and the wind subsided for the first time in over 3 weeks....finally!! Got everything set up and the wait began.....finally my buddy tip up goes...nothing...something stole his minnow. Another 20 minutes goes by....his tip up goes again....nothing...something stole his minnow AGAIN!! not a good start... So finally my set rod goes off....It was a nice little pike.... then my buddy's tip-up goes and he lands a decent pike.... About another 2 hours later....I'm nodding off and another pike almost yanked the rod out of my hand.... So I'm all excited because we've planned on having a fish fry in the hut..... nothing beats fresh boneless pike right out of the water.....and then my buddy tells me he forgot to bring the Canjun fish crisp.......oh no....I almost cried...I've been waiting over 8 months since my last fish fry....I usually practice C & R...99% of the time....anyways we had a great time as always and my buddy ended up with 3 pike for the frying pan (AT HOME)...sheesh....it's all good.. Jason

I wouldn't mind if someone used my ice hut....as long as they left it the way they found it. I do lock my hut however anyone can jimmy it open pretty easy. The way I see it...I only use it 4 times a month....so what the heck...if someone else uses it...it's fine with me. I don't leave anything of great value in it anyways. Actually if someone needs a hut to use during the week day...just P.M. Every year I make a trip about 200KM north of Cochrane...close to James Bay..and there is a cabin that we use on a lake that is left open....probably a fall hunting cabin. We make sure we take all our garbage....replace the wood we use, leave it cleaner than we found it and always leave something behind for the next guys....last year I left some candles, toilet paper and a nice fat COHIBA.....I'm sure someone enjoyed that. Jason

My buddy caught both fish on a hook and minnow......and yes that musky put up one hell of a fight...over 6 minutes on a hand line according to the video which I'm having a real hard time trying to post. I think there's something wrong with my computer. He nearly passed out afterwards in the hut from bare hands exposed to the -32C windchill covered in water and snow.....a hard lesson learned for sure... Oh by the way....as for lipping the walleye the "wrong" way....it went in the fyring pan. Jason
-
Well I finally got out for my first trip of the season to a lake northeast of Peterborough. It was -32C with the windchill. I caught a couple of small perch but my buddy caught a nice walleye and a decent musky which really did a number on his bare hands. The musky was released very quickly due to the extreme cold, but I managed to get a couple of pics. I have video footage on my new camera but I can't figure out how to post it....when I figure it out I'll post it! Jason

Actually there are some rather impressive pike in there....I've seen quite a few in the 8-10lb range.....and someone caught a 13lb pike when I was there last year.....you usually don't get many...but when you do..they are big! Jason

I brought him home as a surprise for my fiancee....called him Magic....because he keeps disapearing. Jason
