  1. Congrats on the new boat Wendel! Now get those Indiana registration numbers off and replace them with Ontario ones! I brought home my new/used boat as well this weekend from St. Catherines. The first thing I noticed was how much lighter aluminium boats are compared to fiberglass boats. My old boat is a fiberglass 17' bass boat and I could feel the weight when towing it with my Ford Windstar. With the new package 17' aluminuim Starcraft, it towed much nicer and easier. I only used 3rd gear when I needed the power and the rest of the cruise on the highway, I was in O/D. After it was towed home, the next time I started the van it did shake a bit but I gave it some gas and took it for a 5 min drive around and it was fine. Is that 115HP Honda a 2 or 4 stroke?
  2. Wow, you paid 8% of $2500 on a boat trailer in taxes? Thats a pretty expensive and nice trailer. I think you could have had the trailer at $500 to $1000 and it would have worked out. When the boat is transferred to your name, that is when you are "recorded" as purchasing the boat. Eventually they will send you a tax receipt asking you to pay taxes on the boat. There is a lot of confusion on what the "boat" means. Like many have said here, there is no taxes on the outboard if you are buying used. So when I say the "boat", it means the actual watercraft and not the outboard or trailer. I am picking up my new/used boat this weekend and plan to have the seller break down the sale to: Trailer, Motor and Boat. I will be paying taxes on the Trailer when its plated and on the Boat. I will not be paying taxes on the motor sicne there is no tax on used outboards.
  3. There is huge difference between "Made In Japan" and "Made In China". My car is Made in Japan (Mazda) and my outboard is a Yamaha. But I guess most white folk can't tell the difference.
  4. I'm Chinese...and to be honest I stay away from Made In China goods as well. Not for all the political reasons they many of you have brought up. My main concern is quality and to be honest Made In China = crap quailty. $4000 car? I would never risk my life and buy a Made in China car.
  5. Those Lund boats are sure great looking boats! Wayne, looking at your Lund set up makes me drool! haha. I recently purchased a full windshield Starcraft Starfire 170 but haven't taken possession of it yet. I fished out of an older bass boat last year (my first boat). I'll get some pictures up of the new ride later in the year.
  6. Can't help you out here but thats the exact trolling motor I am looking for as well. Planning to put it on my 17 ft. Starcraft Starfire. I'm going to get the removal mount ($100...sadly) as well so I can remove the motor from the boat during the off season.
  7. Thanks for the link. Thats actually 5 min away from my work place!
  8. Looking forward to it not because there are amazing deals going on but because its a sign that spring is near. Although you could never tell by walking outside in the GTA... Going to get some crank baits, the 3 bank charger and probably some other things for the boat.
  9. Sweet ride! Congrats! How much did you pay for the package if you don't mind me asking?
  10. Argh...I wish I could say the same her in Toronto. As CCMT mentioned, we are under an extreme cold alert with temps dropping to -13C and -20C with windchill. There is yet another snow storm forcasted to hit the GTA mid next week. This winter seems like its never going to end... I wouldn't be surprised if there was still snow out when I pick up my new/used boat in April!
  11. Where can you get an outboard lock like that?
  12. If you notice the pics the seller put up. They are from Ebay. They have the little camera watermark at the bottom right corner. Ebay usually puts that watermark on images uploaded to their server.
  13. Here is another great deal! http://london.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-bo...QQAdIdZ37692983
  14. So you just want someone to drill the two-four holes for the bolts to go through the transom to ensure the kicker doesn't fall off? A dealer actually quoted you $500 for that?
  15. What does your transom look like? I am assuming you will need a kicker motor bracket? Can you try to clamp the motor on your transom directly like I see on many boats.
  16. Pretty neat device and I've been waiting for it to go on sale as well. However I wished it was only $20 like the auto one. For $20 its worth a shot.
  17. I think the biggest mystery is if you want for the letter from Rev Canada, how do they know what you paid for it? Would they base the taxes on a black book value much like they do with cars? Or maybe you would submit your bill of sale for the boat along with the taxes back to Rev Canada when they send you the letter.
  18. MTO only cares about collecting tax on the trailer like you mentioned. I guess its pretty safe to say that you have to wait for a letter from Rev Canada one day to collect the taxes on all the boats you've ever owned. I can just imagine it now...the bill of $10,000 taxes payable comes to you when you're 65 and you go "what the heck?!"
  19. I am not trying to avoid taxes. I am more than willing to pay them but I am just confused why MTO or Service Canada doesn't have a better way of collecting the taxes. If Service Canada collected the taxes when you transfer reg#, it would work out. However, what if you only bought a boat trailer for $1000. MTO cannot assume you are cheating the system. The problem with Rev Canada sending you a letter one day is what would they base their tax % on?
  20. I've been curious about paying taxes when being a boat. I guess the scenario is when you buy a used boat. As far I understand, you will need to go to MTO to change the name on the trailer and plates. Here you specify how much the trailer is worth and pay taxes on it. Get the plates switched over to your name and new ownership documents on the trailer. Great. Next you transfer the registration number of the boat to your name at your local Service Canada. When I was there last year, they just transferred my name over and never asked for a Bill of Sale or any money for taxes. I even asked them about taxes and they said they don't know but for sure they do not collect any taxes. So now I'm puzzled. Who collects taxes? How do they know how much I payed for the boat if no one asked me for my Bill of Sale on the boat?
  21. This ETEC 115 sounds pretty quiet for a 2 stroke.
  22. Unless you can find a good investment, your $50,000 will not be worth that much in 2-3 years time. So its very important not to leave that money in the bank and invest it into something. You are right about the housing prices in the GTA. I bought a 300K condo downtown Toronto two years ago and its only 700 sq. feet. Thats insane...but at the same time you have to put your money on the market for it to be "worth" anything in terms of housing dollars. Goodluck!
  23. I think you should buy your first home with the $50,000 you have sitting in the bank right now. You should also do it quickly if you are residing in the GTA. Real estate prices keeping going up in Canada, esp in the GTA so you are much better off putting that 50K as a DP on a pre-construction condo or house. This way when you move out of your parents' house in 3-4 years, the place will be ready. A cottage is really nice. My parents bought one on Rice Lake two years ago and my brother and I maintain it. I love being out there and even right now I am thinking of the summer already. Having said that, its all about the fundamentals so you should use your money for a car and house first. When you get a bit older, you can then consider getting a cottage and a bigger boat.
