I've been watching on a bi-daily basis, literally drive by's...she's a no go...prob not gonna happen..too windy and not cold enough...may be weak shore ice in places(4 inches) but your nuts goin out on a big lake in those conditions. On the other hand I live in Red Bay and there is over a foot easy solid ice for a mile out..I would drive a truck on it...problem is no fish. I would stick to Simcoe or elsewhere safe with fish.
-
Wow un-freaking WOW!!!!! It will come out of Superior, that being the largest laker ever. May the gods of Gitchagumi (probably spelled wrong) give a man who hand lines a laker like that credit...he deserves it! oh yeah and the ice with the hand augered hole is surreal.

Hey also not Kenora but I know of a sweet spot on Rainy Lake, drive too, secluded, and good prices. If this person is looking for rustic and tranquill it IS the place..and the fishing is second to none... let me know if needed.

Hey Simon...well done buddy..missin the laker adventures with ya but i see you have been doing well. Wish I was there to enjoy a few hours of slushy madness.... by the way did ya ever hit the brookie bonanza???

Ok well I guess I suck when it comes to whitefish as we got squatt...though we did talk to the same Gamees that everyone else saw and they had only seen 4 fish all morning, they checked us at 11:00. So maybe I don't feel so bad about it. Started in 80 ft, out to 90ish and then back to 85. Marked several in all locations but could not get any to commit. Went in for perch around 1:00 and found them in 48 ft by about 2:30. Came home with about 30 good sized keepers with only 2 true jumbos in the mix. All in all not a bad day for my first time on that side of the lake and first time on Simcoe in 4 years. Wanted to head out past the pressure crack but was unsure about where to get across or conditions so stayed between the islands and the mainland. Anyone else have any luck past the islands???

Beleive you me comin from the north where i could stand on a lake for a month and not see anyone i will be trying to stay away from the crowds...I just have to convince the guy i am with that it is a good idea...though as soon as he see's a fish on the vex chasing my offering i am sure he will be convinced! well...if you see 2 clam portables set up side by side stop in for a moose-cheese smokie!
-
Right on Terry and Wayne good to hear...can't wait to slam a laker!!!! As i understand it we should be somewhere half way to Fox island...right near everyone else!!!!! Oh yeah and off Innisfill not Oro
-
LOL Wayne... miscommunication on my part I guess...we will be the dudes and we will be on the sled. Actually just talked to my buddy and due to logistics I will NOT be bringing the sled so we will be the 2 guys WALKING with sleighs and one of them (me) will be complaining about the fact that I do not have a gas powered form of transportation. How far am I gonna have to walk to get to the fish???? I really hate walking..theres a reason they make sleds! As long as its under 2 miles i can handle it....hows the snow cover?

hey all...gonna try this magical lake they call Simcoe for the elusive lakers and whities i hear so much about in this neck of the woods. Headin out with a buddy that knows nothing about fishing except that its addictive and he needs to go to meetings about it!!! Anyways just wonderin if anyone else will be out that way tommorrow as I have no clue where i will be fishing and have never been there before. All I know for for sure is that I will be on the black and orange Artic Cat with the orange skis...towin a sleigh with 2 dudes on it. We will have matching blue portable huts.... So if you see us come over and say hi... If I actually get something I will post tommorrow night. Cheers

Besides that the place I am renting has no interent so have had limited time to check in. Anyways, have found some time next weekend to get away to Brooks Cottages on Caribou Lake for some lakers and walters. Anyone have anything to offer about the place???? thanks folks and talk at ya soon when I end up online again. Nice Rick...gotta love the country eh? Was out for a ride with my buddy today out your way and seen 2 nice ones between 2 and 3 in the afternoon. The boys are movin' no doubt about it.

I say next weekend or sooner, before the ice starts to skim, talked to guy who was hunting up that way and he got 4 decent fish off shore with a beat up old mepps!!!!....and this guy really wasn't a fisherman??? What do you think?
-
Sure is, I have also never seen another...but she runs strong and beats walking by a mile, or in this case 4 clicks!
-
Crappy dude, real crappy, but like you said there is an upside and we all know that everything happens for a reason. Keep in touch, we'll still get some, one way or another.

So I have been hunting an area for the past 3 weeks after giving up on the freaking moose....spent way way to much time and money chasing those bush-cattle. Anyways like I said I have been hunting the same little chunk of bush for 3 weeks looking for a 14 point my old man saw during opening week of moose season. I have seen him twice since that. The first time he bolted across in front of me after a doe giving me about 1.8 seconds to shoot....needless to say I didn't. The second time was today, 100 yards, clear field of vision and looking at me for over a minute...once again I couldn't shoot. !!!!!! Reason being I had just shot his offspring 10 minutes prior....so I'll back up the story here... Went in this morning (4km walk) and was in by 8:10. Spent 10 minutews breaking branches and basically making a hell of a lot of noise so that I would have clear shooting lanes all the way around me. I was tucked into a clump of spruce in an old winter-cut. After getting settled I started into a 3 minute rattling session with a few grunts mixed in, once again made a hell of a lot of noise. After that gave a doe bleat, followed by another 1 minute later. Its now approx 8:27. I hadn't even moved my legs yet or really settled in and a flash of movement out of the periferal of my right side startles me. At 3, and yes I mean 3 yards this buck comes to a full fledge halt off my right side. He knew EXACTLY where that bleat had come from and I think was a little confused when he saw the outline of an orange coat instead of a yummy doe. So after I realized what was going on I knew he was not the deer I was looking for but thought I would try to bring the gun up to see what happened. He kept bobbing his head to the ground trying to get a scent which allowed me to get the crosshairs on his chest, still at 3 yards. At this point he knew something was up so slowly turned and started away, all I could see was grey. I was going to let him walk but he decided to turn broadside at 10 yards and start the head bob thing again.... Now like I said I have spent way too much time and money over the last month, and I really just wanted it over...... So....180 grains of 30'06 later at 10 yards he was done. I had a smoke, and calmed down after watching him run 30 yards and then crumple. It's now 8:29. I walk over to him and figure out my plan....I am 4 km back in the bush, almost 100 km from home by road, he's going to be about 170-190 dressed, and thats a LONG drag out. So i am going back too town to get a buddies bike to get him out. I decided not to gut him right then as I don't want the scent of blood wafting all through the bush while I am gone for 4-5 hours. Tag him and then start to cover him up with slash and brush so the ravens and wolves will have to work if they want a free meal.... This is when I see him (the big-guy) for the second time.... As I am moving around and covering this guy up I look up and 100 yards away this massive 14 is just standing there looking at me, his rack is very similar in style to the one I just shot so I assume he was the daddy....and once again I couldn't shoot. We watched each other for about a minute and then he turned tail and was gone. I had a good look at him though, he's got a few years left in him and I'll be back next fall. Anyways long-winded but here's the result..... 6 point wide and shallow, technically 9, but basically a 6.
