Simcoe Musky OOPS! I am so sorry and embarrassed
steverowbotham replied to Cudz's topic in General Discussion
I would love to see photos of that! I rose a big musky on a jerkbait at the north end 2 years ago, never bit and never saw her again. -
I fished a tournament there yesterday, and have another tourney there on Wed. If you want pike, try trolling husky jerks in 8-10 feet of water, if you want bass, i dont want to reveal too much as I have the tourney on Wensday, but try the numerous islands in the lake and the deeper edges in the river.

I got a call from a client on Tuesday night. He had taken his kids fishing at Couchiching and they caught fish but nothing of any size. He wanted some "real" fish as he put it. We made plans to meet up last night, and catch some 'real' fish. We never got any giants, but we caught a bunch of 'real' fish and all were happy and excited!

As much as I'd love to lace into some Simcoe sows today, I'm not fishing the Casey Cup tomorrow, and it has been tradition that on opener, I take my younger cousin out fishing in a small fun tournament we do with our club. Weather was sunny and windy. The bite was VERY VERY tough for us. We struggled big time to get bites, and those bites we managed we lost too many. We ended up in 5th place, but won BIG FISH with a 4.45 smallie. Weigh in was at 12:30 and we enjoyed a nice barbeque in the great weather After some burgers, I re-tied some baits and headed to Couch to meet some clients. Got there at 3:30 to a chaotic scene of bass boats coming off the water, out by 4 and the fishing was still pretty slow. The first 2 hours gave up just 1 largie, a nice 3.5 pounder. By 6pm, the smallies turned on and they started laying a beating on them. Missed a few good fish but they ended the day with around 12 fish for the 4 hours. Took a few for the pan, the bigger largie in the pic was released after the pic, get her another day!

I had the day off today and its probably the last day I'll get to fish before a charter on wednseday and bass opener in 8 days, so I figured I'd get out for a bit. I allowed myself some sleeping time and was on the water for 9am. I started in 72 feet of water and caught 7 perch, it still boggles my mind how deep they get sometimes. Made a move to 86 feet of water and marked a bunch of fish right away. They were not interested in any of my offerings. I tried spoons, tubes, and badd boys to no avail. Moved again to 94 feet and dropped down a fluke on a 3/8 oz jighead, I immediately had a fish chase me up to 40 feet and drop back down, then a new streak ripped up the graph and i set the hook on my first laker of the day. I landed 4 more in 40 minutes, and then the action died for me. I fished for another 2 hours with nothing but herring, so I put my rods away and went scouting for opener. I found a lot of empty nests, but saw some big fish cruising up shallow. Man 8 days seems like an eternity!!!! Ahh, the joy of taking pics by myself ... i've got to work on this lol.

TIGER MUSKY and Pike in Kawartha Lakes!! - Pics
steverowbotham replied to Slayingm's topic in General Discussion
A co-worker caught and kept a 40 inch pike out of Balsam on the weekend. I figured it was a musky, but the photo does not lie -
Early season pike, when I've throwing smaller baits, I still use a lot of spinning gear, you should be fine
-
I use them on a flippin jig in clear water situations, more subtle than a lot of other trailers

After a slower than usual weekend, topped off with a laker in the mid-teens, I figured the bite should be back on today. Only had 3 hours to fish, so we stayed in KBay and looked for fish in 75-90 fow and marked more clusters in 84-87 feet so we anchored and started there. Kelli started off with a buckshot spoon and me with a tube. In 10 minutes I had two fish in the boat, about 3 and 4 pounds. Both fish followed the tube up to about 40 feet before hitting. After another 3 pounder, Kelli made the switch to a tube and immediately picked one up by yo yoing the tube. The action died for about a half hour and I was hanging my tube 55 feet down over 86 feet when a big streak went vertical to my tube and the chase was on, the fish caught its prey and I set the hook into the heaviest fish I've felt in a while. She immediately turned and headed back to the depths peeling drag. As I went to loosen my drag, snap. I never got a look at her, but she was a HEAVY fish. Too bad, I'll get her next time. In 3 hours, we landed 8 lakers and lost another 4 or 5. The action is heating up again, should be good for a while still. Help Please- Topics for Kids fishing Seminar
steverowbotham replied to tschirk's topic in General Discussion
I've done several kids seminars in the past few years and one thing I ALWAYS stress is the importance of sunglasses. Polarized sunglasses reduce glare and really protect your eyes, they also act as safety glasses. I have been hit in the face many times by lures, some by others, some of my own, and I always thank God I was wearing glasses! -
Simcoe Report with a beauty laker!
steverowbotham replied to steverowbotham's topic in General Discussion
I forgot to add that this big fish was caught on a white tube with a 1/2 oz head -
Well, between work, weddings, showers and guiding, I've been pretty busy the past 3 weeks, and havent posted many reports. A couple weeks ago I had 4 guys out on Sparrow Lake for a charter, the fishing was tough but I managed to get them into a bunch of pike and a few OOS bass. One 93 year old client could cast as far as I could, pretty impressive! The past week or so I've been focusing on lakers, and early last week they were suicidal. The numbers were incredible and the fish were so aggressive. Fishing tubes and spoons in 74-82 feet of water did the trick, fish were mostly near bottom. Thursday night, I had a client out on Simcoe for some lakers, and did that front ever mess them up. We could hardly move fish off bottom, but we salvaged the day by hitting some pike on the way in, he was happy, so I was satisfied... kind of, couldnt figure those lakers out. This afternoon, I had another couple clients out on Simcoe and we werent sure about this weather. The fish were much higher in the water column and would follow baits aggressively but not commit to biting. Lost a couple and landed a few herring but it was VERY slow overall, luckily Danny (an OFNer) managed to land a tank of a laker to salvage the afternoon! Nice job buddy, looking forward to the next booking!

Monster Smallmouth caught when fishing for Pike
steverowbotham replied to brian.millar's topic in General Discussion
5-6 pounders are not uncommon in Simcoe. You're fish is a beauty for sure. I know of 2 fish over 9 pounds out of Simcoe (not caught by me) this fish was caught in 07 by an angler out of Simcoe, kept unfortunately, but it shows there are PIGS to be had. below is from one of my favourite days on Simcoe
