Everything stated here is spot on from my experience. I typically try and target good weeds and don't pay much attention to depth. But...most of my fish come from 6-15 fow. I find the key is to try and find healthy weeds in the 5-10fow range that has deep water close by. Caught my PB last week on a jerkbait using this as a guide. Then followed it up with a nice 3lb smallie in 20 FOW when the largie bite died down.
Up at 0420, bowl of oatmeal and coffee, off to the spot, wait a few minutes for it to get a little closer to dawn. Set up, miss the first one. Second roebag did the trick. Weighed in at 6 lb 11 oz. Missed a couple more but this started the day off right.
Thanks for the link David. When I got my very 1st " Eagle Ultra Fish Finder" that actually beeped and showed a graphic of a fish everyone in the boat was crowded around the little thing. No one watching where in H we were going of course until we bumped a rock. I actually still have it and it works. We have come a very long way when it comes to electronics and fishing in a short 25 years when the screens came out. Before that we had to contend with paper graphs and flashers and way back then they were the Cat's meow.
