16" Transom - Short or Long Shaft 9.9?

Pretty sure I know the answer, but wanted to gain some more confidence in my decision.  Need a 9.9 for my 12 footer.  Transom is 16".  Short or long shaft motor?  For reference looking at a Suzuki.
