funfishing Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 If you wanted to pick some December worms your wish is coming true. SOL if you're up north but those in southern Ontario will be able to harvest with all of this impending rain. What better gift to give to your best fishing buddies, than your own freshly picked worms? I hear steelhead fishing in the tribs really picks up after a good rain, but that might just be a rumour, I'm not really sure In Ottawa your worm picking will look more like this News headlines are already reading: "The end of the world is hear! Snow-mageddon 2012: 70cm accumulation by Friday"
fishindevil Posted December 16, 2012 Report Posted December 16, 2012 Awesome !!!! I hope to be sledding up there in a few weeks !!! Love the Ottawa valley best sledding and of course the fishing is the best in the province !!!!!!
ch312 Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 small basement composter = no smelly garbage and free worms all year
funfishing Posted December 17, 2012 Author Report Posted December 17, 2012 If I follow what you're saying correctly, does that mean you have to pick through rotting produce to get the worms?
Christopheraaron Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 yes, yes he does mean that, or you could do what I just did and army crawl on he freezing grass for 2 hours.
funfishing Posted December 17, 2012 Author Report Posted December 17, 2012 yes, yes he does mean that, or you could do what I just did and army crawl on he freezing grass for 2 hours. 2 hours! Are you stocking up for the whole winter? Or was it just slim pickings? The last rain we had, they were so easy to pick, you could get a dozen in a couple minutes.

I got about 50, they were everywhere but really light sensitive and mostly in the ground, had to work every one out of the ground once you got a hold of it.
Rod Caster Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 Why didn't you take nightvision video of that Chris? That would have been good for many laughs!
funfishing Posted December 17, 2012 Author Report Posted December 17, 2012 Just checked, they are out thick on my lawn, way out of their holes and not light sensitive compared to spring or summer. You have smart worms on your lawn

Have you tried using a red light? I have a 3 setting headlamp and on the red setting the worms don't react so they don't stand a chance when I pick em. Which is good because I am not as quick as I used to be LOL.

That could work, I did find about 10 out of their holes but most were half way in the ground.

Christopheraaron Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 stretching a red balloon over the light always worked for me when i was picking worms all the time Cool, maybe I'll try that tonight.
Christopheraaron Posted December 17, 2012 Report Posted December 17, 2012 Red light all the way. They don't run away from red light. I didn't know they ran at all.
Christopheraaron Posted December 18, 2012 Report Posted December 18, 2012 Not as many tonight, but the red light did work ok. Most of them were still in the ground (dryer ground), got about 20 this time. I'm thinking of putting them in a rubber made bin with shredded wet paper and feeding them once a week, how does everyone keep them warm?
