HTHM Posted March 14, 2009 Report Share Posted March 14, 2009 How do I unseize a steering cable on a rack and pinion steering system? I have had it apart, and the rack and pinion move freely, but the cable does not. There is a grease fitting on the cable housing that will not accept grease, it will be replaced soon. Any ideas?? grt1 Posted March 14, 2009 Report Share Posted March 14, 2009 I had this happen a few years ago, the only solution was to buy a new cable. the old one rusts completely throughout and siezes the entire length. Tom McCutcheon Posted March 14, 2009 Report Share Posted March 14, 2009 What grt1 said. A few years ago I had the cable snap completely while we were out on Lake Ontario in a pretty dense fog. It gave us no warning that this was going to happen. We had to be towed about 5 or 6 miles into Bluffers. Thank goodness for VHF radio and GPS co-ordinates. I ended up replaceing the cable and buying dinner and and a box of beer for the crew who towed us in. The fishing was great that day and those guys broke it off to come to our rescue.
